Environment America reports detecting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called “forever chemicals,” in 25 of 29 North Carolina rivers and creeks sampled by local conservation groups from 2022 through 2024. That is 86% of the tested sites—not a finding that 86% of every river in the state is contaminated.

What the North Carolina sampling found

The 2026 Environment America report found PFAS in 25 of 29 sampled waterways. Nineteen sites had concentrations above 4 parts per trillion (ppt), and 13 were above 10 ppt. The samples represented several dozen PFAS compounds, and many of the waterways provide water to drinking-water systems.

Finding Result How to interpret it
Waterways with PFAS detected 25 of 29 (86%) A targeted sample collected from 2022 to 2024, not a statewide census
Sites above 4 ppt 19 of 29 Above the federal drinking-water limit for PFOA and PFOS
Sites above 10 ppt 13 of 29 Above the federal drinking-water limits listed for GenX chemicals, PFNA and PFHxS

The report’s percentage describes only these 29 sampled locations. It cannot establish how many of North Carolina’s other rivers, creeks or lakes contain PFAS, or what concentration might be present at an unsampled location.

Why PFAS persist in water

PFAS are a large family of manufactured chemicals used in many industrial and consumer applications. Many PFAS do not readily break down in the environment, allowing them to remain in water and sediments for long periods. Some can also bioaccumulate, meaning concentrations may build up in living organisms over time.

Finding PFAS in a river does not by itself show that a particular household’s tap water exceeds a drinking-water limit. Exposure depends on the source of the household’s water, treatment provided by the utility, the specific compounds detected and their concentrations.

Wastewater is a documented pathway

North Carolina’s Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) reported early results from a 2023 wastewater pilot study. PFAS were found in every sampled facility and across the wastewater, biosolids, soil and compost samples examined.

  • Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.

NC DEQ estimated that 87% to 98% of PFAS entering the sampled treatment plants left in treated effluent discharged to surface water. The agency says the pilot’s detailed fate-and-transport analysis was outside its scope, so the estimate does not describe how far chemicals travel after discharge or the concentration at a particular downstream intake.

What the drinking-water limits mean

NC DEQ lists federal maximum contaminant levels of 4 ppt for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt for GenX chemicals, PFNA and PFHxS. Many other PFAS still do not have an established drinking-water limit. A river sample above one of these values is a warning about contamination at that sampling point; it is not a direct measurement of every customer’s finished tap water.

Federal PFAS rules and proposed changes can shift. EPA rollback plans were announced in 2026, so residents and utilities should verify the current requirements with NC DEQ and the Environmental Protection Agency before relying on a regulatory summary.

Is North Carolina drinking water safe?

There is no single statewide answer. Public-water safety depends on the utility’s source, treatment and monitoring results. NC DEQ advises public-water customers to ask their utility whether PFAS sampling has been conducted and what compounds and concentrations were reported.

An estimate reported by AOL attributed to NC DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson put the number of North Carolinians drinking PFAS-contaminated water at 3.5 million. That is an attributed estimate, not an independently verified statewide count, and “contaminated” can refer to different detected compounds or levels.

“Every North Carolinian should be able to drink clean and safe water, free of toxic chemicals,” said Kemp Burdette, Cape Fear Riverkeeper. “But in the Cape Fear Basin, PFAS pollution is common because of industrial discharges. This has to change. We need strong regulations around PFAS pollution.” Attorney General Jeff Jackson similarly said, “Everyone deserves to have safe water to drink.”

What private-well owners should do

  1. Use a certified laboratory. NC DEQ recommends that private-well owners arrange PFAS testing through a certified laboratory rather than relying on an unverified home strip or informal sampling service.
  2. Confirm which compounds are included. PFAS is a chemical family. Ask the laboratory for the exact compounds covered, reporting limits and the date and location of sampling.
  3. Interpret the result with the water source. Compare reported concentrations with the applicable federal limits for PFOA, PFOS, GenX chemicals, PFNA and PFHxS, while recognizing that many PFAS have no federal limit.
  4. Keep a record and retest when conditions change. Save the laboratory report, sample location and treatment details. A new industrial discharge, well repair or treatment change can justify another test.

Choosing a filter without overpromising

NC DEQ identifies whole-house, under-sink, pitcher and refrigerator filtration as possible options. No generic filter should be assumed to remove every PFAS. Compare the product’s certified contaminant coverage, independently verified reduction performance, point-of-use or whole-house scope, replacement cost and the testing evidence behind its claims.

System type Where it treats water Questions to verify Important limitation
Whole-house Water entering the home Which PFAS compounds are certified, flow-rate performance, cartridge life and replacement price Requires maintenance and may not cover every PFAS
Under-sink A dedicated drinking-water faucet Independent test results, rated capacity and exact compounds covered Does not treat showers, baths or other household outlets
Pitcher Small batches of drinking water Verified reduction data and replacement schedule Limited volume and dependent on timely cartridge changes
Refrigerator filter Water and ice routed through the refrigerator Certification for the specific PFAS compounds and filter-life rating Only treats water dispensed by that appliance

Follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule and avoid treating an expired cartridge as protective. If a laboratory has identified a specific PFAS, select a system whose independent certification explicitly covers that compound rather than relying on a broad “chemical reduction” label.

What this report can—and cannot—show

  • It shows PFAS were detected at most of the 29 North Carolina waterways sampled between 2022 and 2024.
  • It shows 19 sampled sites exceeded 4 ppt and 13 exceeded 10 ppt.
  • It does not measure every river in North Carolina or establish a statewide contamination rate.
  • It does not determine the PFAS level in every connected public-water system or private well.
  • It does not prove that a particular filter removes all PFAS.

For residents, the practical next step is to identify the water source, obtain the utility’s or a certified laboratory’s results, and match any treatment system to the specific PFAS compounds and concentrations found.
