Forever Ago is a single-player, photography-led road-trip adventure about an older man confronting grief and seeking redemption. What kind of game is Forever Ago?
Developed by Third Shift as its debut title, Forever Ago follows Alfred, a man in his seventies who sets out north with his dog and camera after a tragic turn in his life. He visits places, meets people and takes photographs as he works through grief and regret and looks for a path toward redemption. The camera is part of the game, not a real-world accessory you need to buy. Photography is central to progression: MeriStation’s October 7, 2026 review says players take pictures at locations, choose images for Alfred’s journal and photograph some collectibles from the right angle to unlock shared memories.
Is Forever Ago a walking simulator?
It fits the broad idea of a walking simulator: the focus is on moving through a story-rich world, observing places and encountering people rather than mastering action-heavy systems. But photography gives exploration a specific purpose, and some collectibles require deliberate camera positioning. Calling it a walking simulator is useful shorthand, not a complete account of its main mechanic.

What does the review praise—and criticize?
MeriStation’s review praises the tenderness and authenticity of Alfred and Audrey’s relationship, the way the story treats grief as a process of acceptance, the low-poly art style and the music. Those strengths make the game most appealing to players who want an emotionally focused, scenic journey.
The same review finds the road too linear, with choices that have limited consequences and obstacles that often have one obvious solution. It also reports that finding the correct interaction angle can be frustrating, and that it encountered slight stutters on PS5. These are MeriStation’s observations, not results from an independent playthrough; the reported stutters are specific to that reviewer’s PS5 experience.

MeriStation estimates a four-to-five-hour completion time. That is one reviewer’s estimate, not a developer-published duration, and actual playtime can vary with exploration and how quickly you complete photography tasks.

The Associated Press’s October 2026 release-week coverage lists Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, with a reported launch date of October 8, 2026. Third Shift’s official page also listed the game as coming October 8, 2026. Who is Forever Ago for?
It is a stronger fit if you enjoy reflective stories, gentle exploration, photography mechanics and compact adventures. It may be a weaker fit if you want branching choices that substantially change events, open-ended exploration or challenging puzzles. The central trade-off is clear: the intimacy and atmosphere are the draw, while limited agency and straightforward interactions may leave players seeking more mechanical depth unsatisfied.
The evidence here supports a qualitative judgment rather than a direct comparison with other narrative games: Forever Ago seems best approached as a short, story-first experience, not an expansive road trip or a choice-driven role-playing game.
