Choose Forester if wood is the resource you keep running out of; choose Gatherer if you regularly collect forage and want a chance at extra items. The more important long-term question is which level 10 profession you want, because your level 5 choice determines that branch.
What each profession does
| Profession | Level 5 effect | Level 10 choices | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forester | Trees, stumps, and logs drop 25% more wood. | Tapper: syrups are worth 25% more. Lumberjack: all trees have a chance to drop hardwood. | Players who need wood, plan to chop trees regularly, or want the Tapper or Lumberjack path. |
| Gatherer | Foraged items have a 20% chance to be harvested twice. | Botanist: eligible forage items are always highest quality. Tracker: reveals forageable locations. | Players who frequently collect forage or want Botanist’s quality benefit. |
These effects and branches are listed in the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Foraging guide. Neither profession is universally better: the value depends on which resource you use and collect in your current stage of the game.

When Forester is the better choice
Forester’s bonus is a straightforward increase in wood drops from trees, stumps, and logs. It suits a wood bottleneck: for example, if you are planning many buildings or crafting projects and keep having to postpone them because you lack wood. The effect also helps during a deliberate tree-chopping push.

A Mahogany tree is listed as yielding 10 hardwood without Forester and 12 or 13 with it. Actual drops vary, and stump yield increases as well.

Forester leads to Tapper or Lumberjack
- Tapper increases the value of syrups by 25%, making it the relevant level 10 path if tree products are part of your goals.
- Lumberjack gives all trees a chance to drop hardwood, which may suit a player who wants more opportunities to obtain that resource.
Choose Forester at level 5 if one of these level 10 options is more appealing than Gatherer’s alternatives; do not choose it solely on the assumption that wood sells for more.
When Gatherer is the better choice
Gatherer is a good fit if you make a habit of picking seasonal forage or collecting other eligible items. Its 20% chance is chance-based: it does not double every pickup. The benefit therefore grows with how often you collect items that count as forage, rather than with every object found on the ground.
Truffles count as forage, as do ground Red Mushrooms, Purple Mushrooms, and Fiddlehead Ferns found in the Mines and Skull Cavern, according to the wiki’s Foraging guide. Some other objects lying on the ground are not intended Gatherer targets; a documented bug can duplicate certain non-forage items in the Mines and award Foraging XP, so that behavior should not be treated as the profession’s normal effect.
Gatherer leads to Botanist or Tracker
- Botanist makes eligible forage items highest quality. Higher quality can improve sale value, energy and health recovery, and friendship points when given as a liked or loved gift.
- Tracker reveals forageable locations, which can help when finding forage is more useful to you than improving its quality.
Gatherer is the direct level 5 route to Botanist. The wiki’s version history notes a version 1.6 change involving Botanist and items obtained by shaking fruit trees; that detail concerns the level 10 profession and should not be confused with Gatherer’s level 5 double-harvest effect.

How to decide for your save
- Identify the resource you actually lack. If you repeatedly run short of wood, favor Forester. If you routinely collect forage and want more chances at extra eligible items, favor Gatherer.
- Look ahead to level 10. Forester offers Tapper or Lumberjack; Gatherer offers Botanist or Tracker. Pick the level 5 branch that leads to the option you expect to value more.
- Account for your routine. Frequent tree chopping strengthens Forester’s practical value. Regular forage collecting strengthens Gatherer’s. If neither is central to your play, use your preferred level 10 option as the tie-breaker.
This is a play-style decision, not a documented developer ranking. Farm stage, animal setup, collection habits, and goals all affect how useful each bonus will feel.

Forester does not increase the sale price of wood under the current effect described by the wiki. Its version history records that in version 1.4 the profession changed from “Wood worth 50% more” to “Trees drop 25% more wood.” Advice repeating the former sale-price effect describes an older version of the game, not the current listed mechanic. See the Stardew Valley Wiki version history.
