Red Hat’s CVE-2026-12544 and CVE-2026-19843 describe two separate vulnerabilities, not one shared attack chain. Administrators should check Red Hat’s current affected-product guidance for their Foreman or Satellite build and apply the relevant package update; for Red Hat Directory Server, they should verify whether the Cockpit 389 Console is installed and tighten access to it and delegated LDAP write privileges.
How the two vulnerabilities differ
| CVE | Component and trigger | Prerequisites | Scope and Red Hat CVSS v3 score | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-12544 | Foreman configuration initialization through foreman-rake; higher-level maintenance or installer operations can invoke it indirectly. |
Local attack vector; high privileges and user interaction required. | Foreman-related exposure; exact affected Satellite releases and fixed package builds are not established by the cited CVE material. Score: 7.7 (High). | Check the current Red Hat advisory or erratum for the deployed release and update the affected package promptly. Red Hat says it found no practical mitigation. |
| CVE-2026-19843 | The Cockpit 389 Console LDAP editor builds an ldapsearch shell command using a distinguished name (DN). |
A delegated LDAP user must be able to create or rename an entry, and a more-privileged Cockpit operator must later view the crafted entry. | Red Hat Directory Server deployments that include the Cockpit 389 Console; plain RHEL is not affected. Score: 8.4 (High). | Check the current advisory for fix status. Until fixed, restrict console access to trusted administrators and limit delegated add/rename privileges. |
The scores are Red Hat Product Security severity ratings, not evidence of exploitation or incident counts. They should not be treated as a direct measure of which issue is more urgent in a particular environment: exposure depends on the installed components and the required access paths.
What CVE-2026-12544 means for Foreman and Red Hat Satellite
How the Foreman flaw can lead to code execution
Red Hat describes unsafe handling of configuration data during initialization in /usr/share/foreman/config/settings.rb. The processing uses two executable layers, creating a path involving server-side template injection and insecure deserialization. The foreman-rake task interface exposes execution primitives; tools such as foreman-maintain and foreman-installer can invoke it as part of administrative work. As a result, an operation that looks like routine maintenance may indirectly reach the vulnerable path in a high-trust context, often as the foreman user or root.
Red Hat warns of potential management-plane compromise and supply-chain risk. The CVSS v3 vector listed for this CVE is CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. Its Local attack vector and high-privilege requirement distinguish it from an unauthenticated remote attack; the vector also records that user interaction is required. Those requirements do not make the issue harmless on a management server where privileged administrative tools are used.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is Red Hat Satellite affected, and what versions are affected?
The Foreman CVE record described here does not establish affected Satellite release ranges or fixed package builds. Do not infer that every Satellite release is affected—or that a particular one is fixed—from the CVE description alone. Match the exact deployed product release to Red Hat’s current affected-product advisory or erratum, and use that notice to identify the package and update appropriate to that release.
What CVE-2026-19843 means for Red Hat Directory Server
Why both LDAP access and operator interaction matter
The Cockpit 389 Console LDAP editor constructs an ldapsearch command by placing an entry’s DN into a shell command string without correct escaping. A user with delegated permission to create or rename entries in a subtree can supply shell metacharacters in a DN. That alone is not enough: a more-privileged operator must later view the crafted entry in the Cockpit console, allowing the command to execute through Cockpit’s privileged channel.

Red Hat’s CVSS v3 score is 8.4. Its explanation attributes the high-privilege requirement to the delegated LDAP role and the interaction requirement to the separate privileged operator. The vulnerability is scoped to Red Hat Directory Server deployments that include the Cockpit 389 Console. Red Hat explicitly says plain RHEL does not ship that subpackage and is not affected by this issue.
What to restrict while checking for a fix
Red Hat’s interim guidance is to allow only trusted administrators to access the Cockpit 389 Console and to limit delegated LDAP add and rename rights to trusted accounts. Check the current Red Hat advisory for whether a fix is available and for the package instructions that apply to the installed Directory Server release.

Do not confuse the Cockpit flaw with another 389 Directory Server CVE
CVE-2026-14940 is a separate DN-normalization heap-buffer-overflow issue, not the Cockpit LDAP-editor command injection in CVE-2026-19843. Red Hat describes CVE-2026-14940 as potentially triggerable remotely without authentication using a malformed DN containing a legacy-quoted multivalued nested RDN. Red Hat also says production builds may reject malformed input and continue. It rates that issue Moderate with a CVSS v3 score of 5.3 and reports no mitigation that meets its criteria. The different mechanics and prerequisites mean its exposure and response should be assessed from its own Red Hat advisory, not inferred from the Cockpit flaw.

Practical response for administrators
- For Foreman or Satellite: identify the exact deployed release, consult its current Red Hat affected-product advisory or erratum for CVE-2026-12544, and apply the package update specified there. Red Hat’s CVE material recommends prompt updating and does not identify a practical workaround.
- For Red Hat Directory Server: verify whether the Cockpit 389 Console is installed. If it is, restrict access to trusted administrators and review which accounts can create or rename LDAP entries in relevant subtrees while you check the current CVE-2026-19843 fix status.
- Keep the CVEs separate in tracking: record the Foreman initialization issue, the Cockpit command-injection issue, and any assessment of CVE-2026-14940 independently. The cited advisory material does not substantiate exploitation in the wild for these issues.
