Ford held the No. 3 spot in the reported Q3 2026 U.S. light-duty sales comparison, finishing just 1,195 vehicles ahead of Hyundai Motor Group’s Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands combined. Ford’s lead came as its light-duty sales fell 6.6% year over year and the three-brand group’s sales rose 5.4%, according to Quartz’s October 2 report relaying CNBC.
How close was the Q3 sales race?
| U.S. Q3 2026 comparison | Reported vehicles | Year over year |
|---|---|---|
| Ford light-duty vehicles | 507,395 | Down 6.6% |
| Hyundai Motor Group: Hyundai, Kia and Genesis combined | 506,200 | Up 5.4% |
| Ford’s lead | 1,195 | — |
The comparison figures are from Quartz’s October 2, 2026 report, which relayed CNBC reporting. On that basis, Ford retained third place by a margin equivalent to less than one quarter of one percent of either company’s reported volume.

Why do Ford’s two Q3 totals differ?
Ford’s own October 2 Q3 release reports 509,764 total vehicles, down 6.6%. That is not the figure used for the head-to-head ranking: Quartz reports 507,395 Ford light-duty vehicles, excluding Ford’s largest heavy-duty trucks. The two numbers use different sales scopes, so the companywide total should not be substituted into the light-duty comparison.
What does “Hyundai” mean in this ranking?
The 506,200 figure is for Hyundai Motor Group’s Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands together, not Hyundai alone. Hyundai Motor America separately reported 246,896 vehicles for Q3, up 3%, in its October 1 release. That standalone result is a different measure and cannot be compared directly with Ford’s light-duty total to establish the group’s rank.

What the companies said about their results
Ford: phase-outs and retail share
Ford said the planned phase-outs of the Escape and Lincoln Corsair affected its Q3 result. Excluding those changes, the company estimated its retail share at 12.1%, up about 0.4 percentage points year over year, and described its volume as essentially unchanged against an industry decline of about 1%. Those are Ford’s estimates and characterization, rather than the light-duty sales comparison used to determine the ranking.
Ford’s release also reported 1,516,279 vehicles sold through September and said F-Series sales reached 561,508, more than 140,000 ahead of Chevrolet Silverado. For Q3, it reported record Maverick Hybrid sales of 27,793, up 59.6%, and record Bronco sales of 38,020.

Hyundai Motor America: growth in its own brand results
Hyundai Motor America called 246,896 its best Q3 and reported record quarterly hybrid sales, up 35%, alongside a 23% increase in Tucson sales. Those figures describe Hyundai Motor America alone; they are not the combined Hyundai Motor Group sales total used in the ranking.
What the ranking does—and does not—show
Ford finished ahead in this reported Q3 light-duty comparison, but the narrow margin and differing sales scopes matter. The result establishes the order of the figures Quartz reported; it does not make Ford’s total-company sales, Ford’s light-duty count, Hyundai Motor America’s standalone count and the three-brand group total interchangeable. Likewise, total sales and retail share measure different things: Ford’s adjusted retail-share estimate provides company context, not an alternative count for the ranking.
