At the 16 October 2026 price snapshot, Samsung’s 1TB 9100 Pro cost $265 at Amazon—just $5 more than the 1TB 990 Pro. If your desktop or laptop has a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, the 9100 Pro is the clear choice at that price. A PCIe 4.0-only system cannot use its headline speed, making the 990 Pro the better value unless the price gap remains unusually small.
Why the 9100 Pro is worth considering
The 9100 Pro is Samsung’s PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 M.2 2280 SSD using V-NAND TLC. Samsung rates the 1TB and 2TB models for sequential reads of up to 14,700 MB/s, while the 4TB and 8TB versions reach up to 14,800 MB/s. Rated sequential writes are up to 13,300 MB/s for 1TB and up to 13,400 MB/s for the larger capacities.

Those read figures are roughly twice the 990 Pro’s 7,450 MB/s sequential-read ceiling. That advantage matters most when moving very large files, loading data for professional applications, editing high-resolution video or running workloads that can keep several queues busy. Everyday boot, browser and office use will not feel twice as fast because application latency and other system components often dominate.

Check compatibility before buying
PCIe 5.0 desktop
A motherboard with a CPU-connected or chipset-connected PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot is required to approach the 9100 Pro’s advertised performance. Install it in the slot identified in the motherboard manual, because some secondary slots run at PCIe 4.0 or share lanes with other devices. On a compatible platform, update the motherboard firmware and install Samsung’s current SSD firmware before benchmarking.

PCIe 4.0 desktop or laptop
The drive can operate at a lower negotiated PCIe generation, but it will not deliver 14,700 MB/s reads. A 990 Pro is generally the sensible purchase for a PCIe 4.0-only host, particularly when it is substantially cheaper. Verify the laptop’s supported M.2 length, single- or double-sided clearance and thermal design before selecting either drive.
Cooling and sustained workloads
Samsung offers the 9100 Pro with a heatsink and claims up to 49% better power efficiency than the 990 Pro. The heatsink version can help during long transfers, 8K video work, AI projects and data analysis, but it must fit under the motherboard’s integrated M.2 cover or inside the laptop. Do not stack two heatsinks or force a cover over a drive that is already too tall.

The 14,700/14,800 MB/s and 13,300/13,400 MB/s numbers are vendor maximums, not guaranteed long-duration speeds. Samsung notes that write performance uses Intelligent TurboWrite and varies with firmware, capacity and system configuration. A published 4TB result was measured on an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X system with DDR5-4800 memory and an ASRock X670E-Taichi motherboard running Ubuntu 22.04.2; it should not be treated as a universal sustained-write result.

Which drive should you buy?
Choose the 9100 Pro when
- Your system supports PCIe 5.0 x4 in the M.2 slot you will use.
- The 9100 Pro costs only a few dollars more than an equivalent 990 Pro.
- You regularly move large files or run sustained creative, AI, data-analysis or other high-throughput workloads.
- You can provide adequate airflow or use the compatible heatsink version.
Choose the 990 Pro when
- Your motherboard or laptop is PCIe 4.0-only.
- The 9100 Pro premium is substantial after discounts, taxes or capacity differences.
- Your workload is mostly gaming, office software and general desktop use, where peak sequential bandwidth is rarely the bottleneck.
Installation checklist
- Confirm the slot supports an M.2 2280 drive and PCIe 5.0 x4 if you expect full speed.
- Check motherboard or laptop clearance, especially if selecting the heatsink model.
- Back up existing data before cloning or replacing a system drive.
- Install the SSD firmly at the manufacturer’s recommended angle and secure it with the M.2 screw or latch.
- Update system firmware and SSD firmware, then verify the negotiated PCIe link in the firmware setup or operating system.
- Use the manufacturer’s rated figures as ceilings; benchmark only after the drive is cooled and the system is otherwise configured correctly.
