If Football Manager 2022 (FM22) will not start, first identify what happens after you click Play. An immediate return from Stop to Play points to a Steam compatibility problem; a black screen or freeze calls for removing custom files and rebuilding the game’s cache and user-data folder; a crash, error message or completely invisible launch requires the same cleanup plus driver, antivirus and conflicting-software checks. The sequence below follows SEGA and Sports Interactive guidance and keeps your saves safe by moving files to a backup rather than deleting them.
Choose the troubleshooting branch that matches your symptom

Close FM22 and Steam before moving files. Keep a backup of every folder you move so you can restore saves, tactics, skins and graphics after the test.

Fix Steam returning immediately to Play
SEGA’s Steam launch guidance, published October 27, 2023, identifies Steam compatibility mode as a direct cause of this symptom. Compatibility mode can force Steam to run with settings intended for an older version of Windows and prevent the game process from starting correctly.

- Exit FM22 and Steam completely. In Steam, open Steam in the top-left menu and choose Exit; check the notification area and close Steam there too if it remains.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut you normally use and choose Properties. Open the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for. Also clear any compatibility troubleshooter setting that has applied a mode automatically. Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer. Launch Steam normally and try Football Manager 2022.
If Steam still returns to Play, do not repeatedly click the button. Continue with the file, folder and driver checks; a failed process can leave temporary files that make the next attempt misleading.

Remove custom graphics, skins and editor files
Face packs, logos, kits, backgrounds, custom skins and editor data are loaded from your user-data directory rather than from the core game installation. An outdated or damaged add-on can therefore stop FM22 before the main menu appears. SEGA’s launch-freeze guidance begins by removing custom graphics.
Move add-ons out temporarily
- Open
C:Users[YOUR WINDOWS USERNAME]DocumentsSports InteractiveFootball Manager 2022. The title folder may be named differently if your installation uses another Football Manager edition. - Locate folders containing graphics, skins, editor data or other downloaded add-ons. Create a desktop folder named
FM22-backupand move those add-on folders into it. - Launch FM22 with only its original files. Do not overwrite the backup.
If the game now starts, restore add-ons one group at a time, launching after each change. The group that brings the failure back contains the incompatible file. Replace or remove that item rather than restoring everything at once.
Clear FM22 cache and preferences
Corrupted cache or preference data can preserve a bad display mode, skin state or startup setting even after you remove an add-on. Clearing these items is reversible when you move them to a backup folder.

- In the Football Manager 2022 user-data folder, find the folders named
CacheandPreferences(the exact capitalization can vary). - Move them to
FM22-backupinstead of deleting them. - Start the game. FM22 should create fresh cache and preference folders automatically.
Your save games are separate from these temporary settings. If the game opens, exit normally once so the new files are written, then test the same save and skin. Restore an old preference folder only if you specifically need a setting from it; doing so can reintroduce the launch problem.
Verify the installed game files
A damaged or incomplete installation can cause a crash before any window appears. Verification compares local files with the copy held by your platform and replaces files that are missing or corrupt. It does not remove your personal saves in the Documents folder.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Football Manager 2022 and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files (called Local Files in some older Steam layouts).
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch FM22 without custom add-ons.
Other PC storefronts
Epic Games and Microsoft Store installations use their own Verify or Repair controls. Run the equivalent check in the launcher that owns your copy, then restart that launcher. If no repair control is available, reinstalling the game is a later option; first preserve the Sports Interactive folder so your saves and personal files are not removed.

Use a clean Sports Interactive folder
SEGA describes a clean-folder test as moving the existing contents out of your user-data directory, leaving the game folder empty, and launching again. This separates a damaged profile from a damaged installation and is one of the safest high-value diagnostics.
- Exit FM22 and your game launcher.
- Open
C:Users[YOUR WINDOWS USERNAME]DocumentsSports InteractiveFootball Manager 2022. - Create a backup folder somewhere outside that directory, such as
DocumentsFM22-full-backup. - Move every item from the Football Manager 2022 folder into the backup folder. Do not permanently delete the files.
- Leave the original Football Manager 2022 folder present but empty, then start FM22.
If FM22 launches, the original installation is probably usable and the problem is in the old profile data. Close the game, copy back only your save games, and test. Then add graphics, skins, editor files and other folders in separate batches until the failing item is identified. If a completely empty folder still fails, the cause is more likely the launcher, Windows, a driver, security software or the game installation itself.
Try windowed launch and administrator rights
Disable exclusive fullscreen at startup
A black screen can result from an incompatible fullscreen mode or display configuration. Steam users can force a safer startup mode:
- In Steam Library, right-click Football Manager 2022 and choose Properties.
- Stay on General and find Launch Options.
- Enter
--no_exclusive_fullscreenexactly, including the two hyphens. - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
Once FM22 reaches the menu, change resolution or display mode from its video settings and remove the launch option if you no longer need it.
Run FM.exe as administrator for a diagnostic
For a frozen or black-screen launch, SEGA also recommends trying the executable directly with administrator rights. In Steam, open Properties → Installed Files → Browse, locate FM.exe, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. This is a test, not a reason to leave every game running elevated permanently. If direct launch works but the launcher does not, return to the launcher-specific checks and security-software review.
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Steam advises keeping Windows fully updated when software interference prevents a game from launching. Open Settings → Windows Update, install all offered updates, restart, and try FM22 again.
For a crash, black screen or no visible response, update the driver for your graphics card using the manufacturer’s official support channel or Windows’ device-management tools. Reboot after installation. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use the driver’s rollback option or reinstall the previous known-working release rather than installing random driver packages from third-party sites.
Record the graphics adapter model and current driver version before changing anything. That information is useful if you later send diagnostics to SEGA.
Check antivirus and conflicting programs
Security software can quarantine a game file, block the launcher or inject an overlay into the process. Other background programs, including overlays, capture utilities and hardware-monitoring tools, can also interfere. SEGA’s crash guidance specifically calls for checking antivirus interference and programs known to conflict with Football Manager.

- Do not disable protection permanently. If you test with a temporary exclusion, use only the official game and launcher folders, follow your security vendor’s instructions, and re-enable protection immediately after the test.
- Exit overlays and background utilities one at a time, then retry FM22. This identifies a conflict without leaving every program disabled.
- If a work or school computer is managed by an administrator, ask whether application control or endpoint security is blocking the executable.
Do not treat a successful launch with protection disabled as a final fix. It means you need a narrowly scoped, documented security exception or a correction from the security-software vendor.

Two items appeared in Sports Interactive’s early-access known-issues records for FM22. They are historical, version-specific checks rather than explanations for every current installation.
AMD Phenom II processors
The early-access record documented a no-launch issue affecting AMD Phenom II processors. If your computer uses one of these older CPUs, check the processor model in Settings → System → About or in Task Manager → Performance → CPU. A different processor model means this particular record does not explain your failure.

Windows 10 N and MFREADWRITE.DLL
Sports Interactive also recorded a missing MFREADWRITE.DLL dependency on Windows 10 N editions and directed affected users to install the appropriate Media Foundation component. Confirm your edition under Settings → System → About. Do not copy a DLL from an unofficial download site. Use the Microsoft component or the fix identified in the FM22 support instructions for your Windows 10 N edition, then restart.

Platform and launcher considerations
Steam
Apply the compatibility-mode check, file verification and launch-option steps above. If a Steam update is pending, allow it to finish before testing. A game that starts from FM.exe but not from Steam points toward launcher settings, permissions or an overlay rather than your save data.
Epic Games and Microsoft Store
Use the launcher’s own verify or repair function and keep the Sports Interactive folder backed up. Store-managed installations may restrict direct access to the executable, so use the supported launcher path instead of changing permissions on protected folders.
Linux through Steam Play or Proton
Steam notes that unsupported games running through Steam Play or Proton require a separate compatibility check. Confirm that your distribution, Proton version and graphics stack support FM22, and test the current recommended Proton release before changing game files. Windows troubleshooting steps may not map directly to a Proton prefix.
macOS
Use the same symptom classification—immediate return, black screen, crash or no response—but follow the macOS launcher’s file-repair and user-data locations. The Windows paths and Windows 10 N dependency above do not apply to a Mac installation.

If FM22 still will not launch after a clean user-data test, file verification, Windows and driver updates, and the security-software review, submit a support ticket to SEGA. Include:
- The exact symptom and any error text, including whether Steam returns to Play.
- Your Windows edition and build, or your Linux/macOS version.
- CPU and graphics-card models, current graphics-driver version, and the storefront you use.
- A DxDiag report for Windows.
- Any FM22 crash dump generated by the game.
- For a date-specific crash, the relevant save game when SEGA requests one and when sharing it is acceptable to you.
Explain which branch you followed and whether an empty Sports Interactive folder changed the result. That tells support whether to investigate profile data, installation files, platform compatibility or a system-level conflict. Official guidance provides procedures, not a published success rate, so no single step can be presented as a guaranteed fix.
