Reports published October 1 and 3, 2026, say a man at a Food Lion in Kinston, North Carolina, complained about Candy Tilghman’s behavior at checkout before making remarks about race, including “I’m white” and “And I’m proud of it.” The man has not been reliably identified in the reporting reviewed here, and the video details remain attributed to those reports rather than independently authenticated.
What reportedly happened at the Food Lion checkout
The Nerd Stash placed the encounter at the Vernon Avenue Food Lion in Kinston; Atlanta Black Star described the man as standing in line behind Tilghman and making remarks within earshot. Both accounts say Tilghman filmed the confrontation. They report that the man first complained about her behavior, then shifted the exchange to race.

According to the outlets’ accounts of the video, the man said, “The Blacks think they own the [expletive] world, but they don’t.” When he realized he was being recorded, he reportedly said, “I don’t care, record me all you want.” The accounts also quote him saying, “I ain’t said nothing but black. I ain’t told you no ugly word,” followed by “I’m white” and “And I’m proud of it.”
How the reported encounter ended
The accounts describe the ending somewhat differently. The Nerd Stash says an older woman who appeared to be with the man pulled him away; Atlanta Black Star says his companion coaxed him into another checkout aisle. Both accounts say the exchange ended with the man moving away from Tilghman.

What is known about the video and Tilghman’s response
Both outlets reproduce an X post from LongTimeHistory dated September 30, 2026. The original post could not be retrieved for independent review, so the video’s contents are presented here as reported by those outlets, which appear to rely on the same circulating clip.
The Nerd Stash says Tilghman later expressed gratitude that she remained composed and hope that Jesus would save the man’s soul. Atlanta Black Star similarly attributes to her a message asking people who knew him to tell him she hoped Jesus would save his soul. These remarks are relayed through the post and reporting, not through a direct interview in the reviewed material.

Has the man been identified?
No reliable identification of the man appears in the reviewed coverage. Atlanta Black Star reports that he wore a T-shirt promoting Dover mayor William Randy Mitchell Jr. That detail does not establish who the wearer is or what party, if any, he supports. The outlet attributes claims about Mitchell to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, but the linked voter lookup could not be verified here.
