Food Delivery Robot Vandalism and Theft: What the Reports Actually Show

Reports from Los Angeles describe people kicking or pushing food-delivery robots and opening their compartments to take food—but they do not establish how often it happens or whether robot deployments are driving a broader rise in vandalism or theft. The incidents, videos and one restaurant’s account are documented in a 2023 Futurism report by Sharon Adarlo; the number of affected robots was not readily available.

What happened to the delivery robots in Los Angeles?

Futurism’s August 8, 2023 report described food-delivery robots operating in parts of Los Angeles. Citing local broadcaster KTLA 5 and social-media videos, it recounted incidents in which people kicked or pushed robots and opened delivery compartments to take food. These are reported examples, not a verified count of incidents or affected machines.

The report explicitly said there was no readily available information on how many robots had been impacted. It therefore cannot show how common the conduct was, whether it was increasing, or how it compared with the volume of completed deliveries.

Does the evidence show that robots are driving vandalism and theft?

No. “Is driving” is the original headline’s causal framing, but the reported incidents do not establish why people acted or whether robot deployment caused the behavior. The story supplies examples, not a systematic crime dataset, a measured trend, or evidence identifying a motive. A TikTok poster’s remark quoted in the article is social-media commentary, not proof of why the person acted or what the public generally thinks.

A 2024 ROBONOMICS analysis of public commentaries on autonomous food-delivery robots discusses safety, vandalism, theft and social acceptance as public concerns. It provides context for the kinds of issues people discuss, but it does not tally the Los Angeles incidents or establish that robots caused them.

What did the reported incidents mean for restaurants?

Steve Avila, general manager of Blu Jam Café, told KTLA 5 that his business had to remake food after an incident and was reimbursed: “We have to remake the food, but luckily we still get reimbursed for that.” This describes one restaurant’s experience. The report does not quantify its losses or show how other restaurants or delivery operators handle stolen orders.

What do the 99.9% and 200-restaurant figures mean?

The 2023 report quoted Serve Robotics as saying it was aware of incidents while its deliveries had a 99.9% completion rate and it served “200 restaurants and counting.” Both are historical company claims, not independent measurements of attacks or current deployment figures.

How do these reports fit the wider discussion of delivery robots?

A 2026 article in Sustainability, “Tempered Enthusiasm: Consumer Perceptions of Autonomous Delivery Services,” discusses theft and vandalism as perceived risks and describes safeguards such as GPS trackers, locks, tampering alarms and video recording. That broader discussion concerns consumer perceptions and design responses; it does not supply an incident rate for the Los Angeles cases or verify the cause of the reported conduct.

The available evidence supports a limited conclusion: people were reported to have interfered with delivery robots and taken food in some Los Angeles incidents, and at least one restaurant manager said his business remade food and received reimbursement. It does not show the scale of the problem, a rising trend, or a causal link between robot deployments and vandalism or theft.
