The cheapest delivery app is the one with the lowest live checkout total for your exact order—not a permanently cheaper brand. Delivery fees, service fees, small-order and distance surcharges, menu prices, promotions, taxes, memberships, and tips can all change the result. To compare apps fairly, use the same restaurant, items, delivery address, order time, basket size, promotion assumptions, and membership status, then verify the completed receipt.
Why there is no universally cheapest delivery app
Food-delivery pricing is assembled per order. The merchant, your address, distance, order size, delivery time, local regulations, membership, and available promotion can each change the quote. A result that is cheapest for a small lunch may be more expensive for a large dinner, and a DashPass, Uber One, or other membership can change delivery charges without eliminating service fees or taxes.

No independent, current study establishes one app as the cheapest across the United States. Historical screenshots and percentages are especially risky: interfaces and fee policies change by market. The only reliable comparison for a particular purchase is a same-basket checkout comparison made shortly before ordering.

#1 Best Overall
- Get thousands of restaurants, convenience stores, pet stores, grocery stores, gifts, and more at your fingertips.
- Easy ordering, order customizations, and real-time tracking
- Pickup, group order, and scheduled delivery options available
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Select the same restaurant and items. Match sizes, modifiers, drinks, and quantities. Check whether the restaurant uses different menu prices on an app; a lower fee can be outweighed by a higher menu subtotal.
- Enter the same delivery address. Apartment, building, ZIP code, and delivery instructions can affect availability, distance pricing, and local taxes.
- Use the same time window. Weather, demand, priority delivery, and operating hours can add or remove charges.
- Apply promotions consistently. Either use no promotion or apply only offers that are genuinely available on both sides. Do not compare one app’s new-user credit with another app’s ordinary price.
- Match membership assumptions. Compare both without memberships, or compare memberships that you already pay for. Do not treat a trial benefit as a recurring saving.
- Expand the complete price breakdown. Capture every line item and the estimated tax before placing the order.
- Keep the tip separate. Enter the same optional tip, or leave it out while comparing platform charges. Add it afterward when evaluating your actual out-of-pocket cost.
- Save the completed receipt. The final tax or other adjustment can differ from the pre-payment estimate.
Comparison worksheet
| Line item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Menu subtotal | Item prices, modifiers, and quantities | Apps may show merchant-specific menu prices. |
| Delivery fee | Amount and any membership credit | May vary by merchant, distance, market, or membership. |
| Service fee | Amount and stated basis, if shown | Often changes with order details and local policy. |
| Small-order fee | Amount and threshold | A low subtotal can trigger a separate charge. |
| Other surcharges | Long-distance, weather-impact, priority, express, regulatory, or similar fees | These can appear only under particular conditions. |
| Discounts and credits | Promotion, membership credit, or merchant discount | Record whether the saving is one-time or recurring. |
| Estimated tax | Tax shown at checkout | It may be recalculated when the order is completed. |
| Tip | Optional amount, kept separate | It is not a platform fee or tax. |
| Final receipt total | Amount actually charged | This is the number to reconcile against your card statement. |
What each charge means
Menu subtotal and menu-price differences
The subtotal is the restaurant’s listed price for the selected items before delivery-platform charges, tax, and tip. An app may display a different menu price from the restaurant’s in-store or direct-order price. Record the subtotal rather than assuming identical menus.
Delivery fee
A delivery fee pays for the delivery service under the app’s pricing model. It is not a tax. Its amount can depend on the merchant, distance, demand, market, and membership. A “free delivery” label generally means the delivery line is reduced or zero under stated conditions; it does not promise a zero-dollar checkout.
Service fee
A service fee is a platform charge, separate from delivery and tax. The calculation may use subtotal, distance, order size, or local rules. Read the label and amount shown for your order instead of importing a percentage from another city or an older article.

Small-order and other surcharges
A small-order fee can apply when the subtotal falls below an app’s threshold. Other possible lines include long-distance, weather-impact, priority or express, and regulatory-response fees. They are conditional: their absence on one order does not mean the app never uses them.

- A huge selection fulfilling all your needs - food and more!
- Easy ordering & real-time tracking
- Customize your orders
- Pickup & group order options
- Physical gift cards are delivered active via mail.
Discounts and membership credits
Subtract promotions and membership credits only after checking their conditions. A membership may reduce or eliminate an eligible delivery fee while leaving service fees, small-order fees, taxes, and tip. A coupon can also be limited to particular merchants, times, or minimum subtotals.
Tip
The tip is optional compensation selected by the customer. Keep it visible as its own line when comparing apps so a different default tip does not make one checkout appear cheaper.
How tax works on a delivery order
Tax is imposed under applicable state and local rules; it is not the same as a platform fee. The taxable result can depend on the item type, order date and time, store and delivery locations, fulfillment method, and other jurisdiction-specific details. Because rules differ, a tax percentage from one city cannot safely be applied to another.

The amount may be updated when the order is completed, and the finalized tax appears on the order receipt. If a refund is issued, applicable tax is refunded as part of that adjustment. Treat the checkout figure as the amount you are being asked to authorize, but use the completed receipt as the record of the final calculation.

- Redemption: Mobile App
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Taxes and fees can also be displayed differently. A line that combines them is harder to audit than separate entries. The Federal Register’s April 16, 2026 account of an earlier District of Columbia enforcement action involving Grubhub described requirements to disclose additional charges and list fee names and amounts separately at checkout. That account supports careful line-item checking; it does not establish Grubhub’s current nationwide fee schedule.
How to reconcile the final receipt
Do not stop at the checkout screen. Compare the authorization, completed receipt, and card statement.
- Save or screenshot the pre-payment breakdown, including discounts and estimated tax.
- When the order is marked complete, open its receipt and note the final subtotal, each fee, tax, tip, refund, and total.
- Compare each line rather than only comparing the grand total. An estimated tax change may explain a small difference; a new fee or missing credit needs investigation.
- Check your payment account for a temporary authorization and the settled charge. A pending authorization can differ from the final settlement.
- If an item was unavailable, substituted, refunded, or partially refunded, verify that the receipt reflects it and that related tax was adjusted.
DoorDash receipt and tax behavior
DoorDash says the finalized tax is shown on the receipt and provides instructions for accessing a specific order’s receipt on its website. Its company announcement on July 23, 2026 stated: “Every fee and tax is shown in full again on the checkout screen before you finalize your order.” That is DoorDash’s description of its checkout presentation, not a guarantee about another app’s interface.
Uber Eats receipt behavior
Uber Eats says a completed order can receive an updated final receipt. Display names and access steps can change with the market and app version, so use the completed order’s receipt rather than an old screenshot or a saved estimate.

What the major app evidence does—and does not—show
DoorDash’s 2026 fee-model details
DoorDash’s consumer information describes delivery and service fees plus possible long-distance, small-order, weather-impact, express, and regulatory-response fees. It says exact charges depend on the merchant, DashPass status, and local regulations. Under the fee structure that began rolling out in late July 2026, the service fee can vary with factors such as distance and order size, while the delivery fee is fixed per order and varies by merchant.
DoorDash identified California, Chicago, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York City, Puerto Rico, and Seattle among initial exclusions from that rollout. Because the rollout is dated and evolving, your checkout—not a general description—controls the current price in your market. DashPass can provide reduced or zero delivery benefits on eligible orders, but other charges can remain.
In a July 23, 2026 announcement, DoorDash said its own analysis found that “Over 70% of Recent Orders Would Have Had the Same or Lower Fees” under its model, with a median saving of $0.78 per order. Those are company-analysis figures, not an independent cross-app statistic or a promise that your order will cost less.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUber Eats: treat the surfaced percentage as localized
An Uber help page surfaced for a localized market describes delivery fees as location-dependent, service fees as typically 5% of subtotal, and small-order fees below a threshold. That page is not a universal U.S. rate card. Do not multiply your subtotal by 5% unless your own local checkout displays that calculation; obtain the current quote for the specific restaurant and address.

Grubhub: what the D.C. action tells you
The Federal Register publication dated April 16, 2026 recounts an earlier D.C. action concerning disclosures for service and small-order fees, “free delivery” claims where service fees still applied, and the practice of combining taxes and fees. It emphasizes naming and showing additional charges separately. It does not provide a current, nationwide Grubhub price list or prove that receipt behavior is identical in every market.
Common traps and how to avoid them
- Comparing headline delivery offers: “Free delivery” can coexist with service fees, small-order fees, taxes, and tip. Compare the complete total.
- Using different baskets: A different drink, modifier, or quantity changes subtotal, tax, and fee calculations. Copy the basket item by item.
- Mixing membership status: A member’s delivery benefit is not comparable with a nonmember quote unless you label the scenarios separately.
- Treating one historical percentage as current: Consumer Reports’ examples from 2021 are historical, and a localized Uber help page cannot establish a national rate.
- Combining tax and fees in your notes: Keep tax, platform charges, tip, and discounts in separate columns so a receipt change is explainable.
- Ignoring the receipt: Estimated tax, refunds, substitutions, and completed-order adjustments can change the settled amount.
- Assuming laws create one national price: Local regulations affect what is charged and how it is disclosed; they do not create a single U.S. fee schedule.
A practical decision rule
For a one-time order, choose the app with the lower final checkout total after matching the basket, address, time, promotion, membership, and tip. If totals are close, use the receipt clarity and refund handling that you find easier to audit. For frequent ordering, repeat the comparison across the restaurants and order sizes you actually use; a membership can be worthwhile only when its recurring savings exceed its cost after all remaining charges.
Keep a receipt for any order whose amount matters—large group meals, business reimbursement, or a disputed charge. The receipt is the authoritative record for the completed tax and final total, while the checkout screen is the decision point for comparing offers.
