A vapor chamber moves heat across a larger area, graphite sheets spread heat through very thin passive layers, and fans add active airflow. Foldable phones often combine two or more of these methods because a hinge, flexible display and split internal layout leave less room for a conventional cooling assembly. The right design depends on the specific model, workload, thickness and available airflow—not on the component name alone.
Published manufacturer material does not provide a controlled, head-to-head test of vapor chambers, graphite sheets and fans inside the same foldable phone. The comparisons below therefore explain how each method works, what its trade-offs are, and how to judge a real device without turning unrelated claims into a universal ranking.

Why cooling is unusually difficult in a foldable phone
A conventional phone can arrange its processor, battery, display and thermal hardware in one relatively continuous slab. A foldable must work in at least two physical positions while accommodating a hinge, a flexible display, separate or divided battery sections and tightly packed boards. The thermal path has to follow that mechanical layout without interfering with the hinge or adding too much thickness.
Samsung’s engineering description of the Galaxy Z Fold6 links the phone’s limited thickness and internal volume to a product-specific thermal design. The article describes a two-part battery layout and a vapor chamber. Samsung’s September 9, 2026 engineering article about its foldable line also says the company tailors the thermal structure and graphite use to the device’s size and performance requirements. Those statements describe Samsung designs; they are not evidence that every foldable uses the same stack.

Heat management does not make heat disappear. It determines how quickly heat leaves a small hot component, how widely it is distributed, where it reaches the phone’s outer surfaces and how long the device can sustain a demanding workload before performance management intervenes.
How vapor-chamber cooling works
Evaporation and condensation spread heat
A vapor chamber is a thin, sealed heat spreader containing a small amount of working fluid. When a processor or another hot component heats one part of the chamber, the fluid evaporates. The vapor travels through the sealed chamber toward cooler regions, condenses on the chamber’s walls and returns through an internal structure to be heated again. This cycle moves heat away from the small source and distributes it over a larger area.
OPPO’s explanation of the Find X5 Pro cooling system describes that evaporation–condensation process and says that increasing chamber area helps spread heat from components such as the processor. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 engineering article makes the same design point in model-specific terms: “The larger the vapor chamber, the more effectively it can dissipate heat and allow devices to maintain stable performance.” Both are manufacturer explanations, not independent measurements comparing foldables.
What a larger chamber can and cannot do
A larger chamber can provide more area over which to distribute heat, provided the rest of the thermal path can accept that heat. It does not lower every temperature automatically, and it cannot overcome a blocked path, inadequate contact with the processor, a hot ambient environment or software limits. In a foldable, the chamber’s outline must also clear the hinge and fit the available internal volume, so the physically largest possible chamber may not be practical.
OPPO says the Find X5 Pro’s vapor chamber was 75% larger than the previous generation. That is a manufacturer comparison for a conventional, 2022-era phone, not a result for a foldable and not a percentage that can be transferred to another model.

How graphite sheets work
Thin passive heat spreading
Graphite sheets are passive layers that conduct heat rapidly along their plane. A sheet can take heat from a crowded board area and spread it across a wider section of the phone, where it can be handed to another component of the thermal path or released through the chassis. Because the material is extremely thin, it is useful where a thicker chamber or metal block would consume space.
ASUS describes enlarged and reshaped graphite sheets in the ROG Phone 6D as a way to move heat from board areas. Samsung says it uses graphite with improved thermal performance and adapts the thermal structure to each device’s dimensions and performance needs. In a foldable, graphite can complement a chamber, frame or other spreader rather than replace the entire cooling system.
Graphite is not automatically better than a chamber
The sources do not provide standardized, same-phone measurements showing that every graphite implementation outperforms every vapor chamber. Sheet thickness, grade, area, contact pressure, adhesive layers and the rest of the assembly all matter. A phone may use graphite to bridge narrow or irregular spaces while relying on a chamber for heat transport over a larger region. Treat “graphite cooling” as a description of one layer, not a complete system specification.
What fan cooling adds
Airflow requires a path, power and space
A fan actively moves air. To have a useful effect, it needs an intake, an outlet or duct, a heat-transfer surface exposed to that airflow and electrical power to run the motor. The moving air can remove heat from a surface more quickly than passive radiation and natural convection alone, but the fan does not cool the processor directly unless the heat has first reached the surface or cooler assembly.
OPPO’s K13 Turbo Series illustrates an integrated approach: the company describes a built-in centrifugal fan and duct used together with a vapor chamber and graphite. This is an example from conventional smartphones, not proof that a particular foldable has room for the same hardware.

Internal and external fans are different designs
An internal fan is engineered into the phone, including its duct, control software, acoustic treatment and power budget. An external cooler is a separate accessory. ASUS documents a clip-on cooler for the ROG Phone 6D that places a fan over the chip area and adds a Peltier element. That accessory demonstrates a gaming-phone form factor; it does not establish fit or effectiveness on a foldable.

A Peltier-based accessory can create a colder contact surface but also consumes more power and may cause condensation in unsuitable conditions. No cited source supplies a universal temperature reduction for fan cooling in foldables, so a fan should not be described as guaranteeing lower sustained temperatures.
Vapor chamber, graphite and fan: a practical comparison
| Approach | How heat moves | Strength in a foldable layout | Costs and constraints | Evidence available here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vapor chamber | Fluid evaporates at the hot area, vapor spreads, then condenses at cooler walls. | Spreads heat over a broad, shaped area while remaining relatively thin. | Needs space, reliable contact and a layout that clears the hinge; it distributes heat rather than eliminating it. | Samsung identifies one in Galaxy Z Fold6; OPPO explains the mechanism on Find X5 Pro. No same-foldable head-to-head result is stated. |
| Graphite sheet | Conducts heat quickly along the plane of a thin sheet. | Fits narrow, irregular spaces and can connect board hotspots to a wider thermal path. | Performance depends on sheet area, interfaces and the rest of the assembly; it is usually one layer of a larger system. | ASUS and Samsung describe model-specific graphite designs. No universal superiority over chambers is stated. |
| Integrated fan | Moves air through a designed duct over a heat-transfer surface. | Can add active heat removal when the phone has room for a duct and motor. | Consumes power, produces noise and needs openings or a controlled airflow route. | OPPO describes a fan in the K13 Turbo Series, a conventional-phone example; no cited foldable result is stated. |
| External clip-on cooler | A separate fan, sometimes paired with a Peltier element, removes heat from the phone’s exterior. | Can be added without redesigning the phone’s internals. | Fit, case thickness, hinge clearance, contact location and open/closed operation must all be checked. | ASUS documents a clip-on accessory for ROG Phone 6D; foldable compatibility is not established. |
How foldable manufacturers combine these methods
Manufacturers commonly layer passive and active elements rather than selecting one in isolation. A graphite sheet can spread heat out of a board hotspot; a vapor chamber can transport that heat across a larger region; the frame or back panel can then release it to the surrounding air. An integrated fan, where space permits, adds forced airflow to that path.
Gore’s supplier case study, titled “Conquering Thermal Challenges in a Foldable Smartphone,” describes the difficulty of reserving internal space for thermal management and presents insulation compatible with graphite or vapor chambers. Because the device is unnamed and the document is a supplier case study, it should be read as an example of a design challenge, not as a universal rule for all foldables.
Open and closed positions can expose different surfaces and change how a user holds the phone. A design that spreads heat across one half may feel different when the device is folded, and a hinge-side area may be unavailable for a clip or duct. These are reasons to evaluate the named model rather than infer its internals from another manufacturer’s phone.

How to evaluate cooling claims for a specific foldable
Use the following checklist when reading a product page, engineering article or review. It separates meaningful evidence from a component label.
- Identify the exact model and configuration. Check the generation, regional variant and whether the statement applies to the phone itself or an accessory.
- Find the complete thermal stack. Look for a chamber, graphite, heat pipes, frame spreading, insulation and any fan, rather than treating one named material as the whole solution.
- Check the workload. Gaming, camera recording, cellular uploading and charging create different heat patterns. A claim without a workload is difficult to interpret.
- Check test conditions. Ambient temperature, case use, brightness, network mode, battery level and test duration affect results. The cited sources do not provide a common protocol across foldables.
- Look for sustained results. A brief peak score or a short temperature reading does not establish long-session behavior.
- Separate skin temperature from component temperature. A phone can spread heat widely and feel warm while keeping a hotspot controlled, or feel cool at one location while another area is saturated.
- Note the physical penalties. Compare thickness, mass, hinge arrangement, battery layout, fan noise and power draw alongside thermal results.
Checking an external cooler on a foldable
An external cooler can be useful when the phone’s design and the accessory’s contact point line up. Do not assume that a clip made for a conventional gaming phone will clear a foldable hinge or reach the processor through both halves of the device.
- Measure the closed and open configurations. Record the phone’s width, thickness and the location of the likely hotspot in each position.
- Check the mounting method. Confirm that the clip or clamp can hold the phone without pressing on the flexible display or hinge.
- Test case compatibility. A case can prevent firm contact or increase the gap enough to reduce heat transfer. Remove it only if the cooler manufacturer permits that use and the phone remains protected from scratches.
- Verify hinge clearance. Make sure the accessory does not restrict folding, apply torque to the hinge or cover microphones, speakers, cameras or vents.
- Confirm airflow and power. Keep the cooler’s intake and exhaust clear, and use the power source specified for the accessory. A fan that recirculates hot air has limited value.
- Observe both positions before a long session. Check that the cooler remains centered and stable when opening, closing or changing grip. Stop if the phone, hinge or accessory becomes unusually hot, damp or mechanically stressed.
A clip-on cooler is an accessory category, not a guaranteed upgrade. Its result depends on where the phone transfers heat to the exterior and whether the cooler can make close, stable contact there.
What the published numbers actually mean
| Claim | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|
| 75% larger vapor chamber | OPPO’s comparison for the Find X5 Pro versus its previous generation; it is not a foldable-phone result and does not quantify a temperature change. |
| 2–4°C cooler in BGMI | OPPO India’s claim for the K13 Turbo Series in a regional announcement. It concerns conventional phones and a named gaming workload, not a cross-method foldable test. |
| “A vapor chamber is the heart of the phone’s cooling system.” | OPPO’s wording in its Find X5 Pro cooling-system article; it is a manufacturer description, not an independent finding. |
| “The larger the vapor chamber, the more effectively it can dissipate heat and allow devices to maintain stable performance.” | Samsung Mobile Press statement about Galaxy Z Fold6; it explains Samsung’s design rationale rather than ranking all cooling technologies. |
These figures should not be pooled into a league table. They use different products, workloads and measurement contexts, and none measures vapor chamber, graphite and fan cooling in the same foldable under identical conditions.

Calling heat spreading heat removal
A chamber or graphite sheet moves heat to a larger area. The phone still has to release that heat through its surfaces and surrounding air. Spreading can reduce a concentrated hotspot without making the entire device cold.
Treating a fan as a guarantee
Active airflow helps only when the cooler reaches a useful surface and has a clear path for air. Motor power, contact quality, ambient temperature and software limits all affect the outcome.
Modifying the internal cooling system
Internal chambers and graphite layers are not ordinary consumer upgrade parts. Opening a foldable can damage the display, hinge, seals, battery or thermal interfaces. A repair or modification attempt is not a sensible general recommendation.

Bottom line for choosing a foldable
Choose a phone whose complete thermal design matches your workload, not one marketed with a single impressive component. Vapor chambers are effective area-spreading devices; graphite provides thin, passive conduction; and fans add active airflow at the cost of space, power and noise. Foldable geometry determines how well any of them can be implemented. Until comparable tests are published on the same foldable under the same conditions, the technically honest conclusion is that these are complementary design tools, not three universally rankable alternatives.
