The Focal Mu-so Hekla is worth considering if you want one powerful cabinet for TV, films, games and music—and have the space and budget for it. Independent reviewers praise its spacious, detailed sound and clear dialogue, but it is not a compact soundbar, a component system you can build out freely, or a choice for listeners who insist on completely unprocessed stereo.
What is the Focal Mu-so Hekla?
Focal positions the Mu-so Hekla as an immersive all-in-one system rather than simply a soundbar. Its form and TV connection make it soundbar-like in use, but its defining idea is to put home-cinema and music playback in one substantial enclosure. Focal says it was developed collaboratively by Focal and Naim engineers.

The system has 15 drivers and a claimed 660 W of amplification, according to Focal’s product specifications; What Hi-Fi? also reports those figures. They describe the manufacturer’s design, not independent power measurements. Focal additionally lists a 30 Hz–20 kHz frequency response at ±3 dB and a peak SPL of 108 dB at one metre; these, too, are manufacturer specifications rather than independently verified review measurements.

How does it sound for films, TV and music?
TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 review describes a detailed, spacious presentation, articulate voices, clear dialogue, substantial dynamics and controlled, enjoyable bass. What Hi-Fi?’s June 15, 2026 review also assesses it as a strong performer with both movies and music. These are the reviewers’ listening evaluations, not laboratory test results.

Focal includes Dolby and Sphere listening modes in the Focal & Naim app, along with ADAPT, its Adaptive Acoustic Personal Tuning feature. ADAPT uses room measurements entered in the app to tailor the system to the listening space. The official specification sheet documents supported Dolby formats and format-specific limits.
The important stereo caveat
TechRadar reports that the Hekla applies spatial processing to two-channel sources, including when the app is set to “stereo,” and offers no way to turn that effect fully off. That may suit listeners who want a room-filling presentation, but it matters if you want conventional, unprocessed two-channel playback. If that is a requirement, ask a dealer to demonstrate the modes with your own music before buying.

- Wireless Subwoofer, Place It Anywhere: The wireless subwoofer connects to the soundbar without audio cables, giving you the freedom to place it anywhere in your room for flexible setup.
- Mica-Reinforced Drivers for Greater Accuracy: Mica-reinforced diaphragms increase driver rigidity by up to 30%, helping suppress cone breakup and unwanted resonance. The enhanced stability helps reduce distortion by up to 20%, delivering cleaner, more accurate sound with improved clarity and detail.
- VoiceMX Technology for Clear Dialogue: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. By dynamically boosting the 120 Hz–6 kHz vocal range with adaptive EQ and gain control, dialogue stays clear and easy to follow in any scene.
- BassMX Deep Bass Technology: With an 18 mm high-excursion driver, 6.5 L tuned cabinet, and high-density magnetic circuit, the wireless subwoofer produces strong low-frequency output. BassMX optimizes 45–150 Hz bass for deeper, tighter, and more realistic sound at any volume.
- 240W Peak Output with 2.1 Channel System: Featuring a precision-tuned soundbar and a dedicated wireless subwoofer, the system delivers up to 240W of peak power for room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 95 dB, it reproduces clear dialogue, detailed mids, and impactful bass for movies, music, and gaming.
Connections and setup
The Hekla covers common TV and network connections without requiring a separate receiver. Focal lists HDMI eARC with CEC, optical TOSLINK, an RCA subwoofer output, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. Its specification sheet lists SBC and AAC Bluetooth codecs. Check the format and connection specifications against the devices you plan to connect, particularly if you depend on a specific audio format.
- For a TV: connect through HDMI eARC, or use optical if that better suits the television. CEC is listed for HDMI control.
- For network playback: use Wi-Fi 6 or Ethernet.
- For a nearby wireless source: Bluetooth 5.1 is available, with SBC and AAC listed in the official specification.
- For more low-frequency output: the RCA subwoofer output allows connection of an external subwoofer. A subwoofer is not included, and TechRadar also notes that rear speakers are not included.
What Hi-Fi? notes there is no built-in phono stage, so a turntable that needs one will require an external phono preamp or a turntable with a suitable built-in stage.

Will it fit your room and TV?
Measure before ordering. Focal gives the Hekla’s dimensions as 11.8 cm high, 100 cm wide and 29.5 cm deep, with a weight of 15.5 kg. That is a wide, deep, heavy unit—not a small bar to tuck under any screen. What Hi-Fi? also flags placement complications from its size and illuminated dial.
Check the usable surface depth, the width of your furniture, clearance beneath the screen and whether the cabinet or TV stand can support the weight. The 11.8 cm height may also obscure a screen’s lower edge or interfere with an infrared receiver, depending on your setup. Allow room for the cables and ensure the chosen position leaves the controls and illuminated dial unobstructed.

- VocalMatrix Algorithm: Powered by Ultimea’s VocalMatrix, the system intelligently extracts vocals and dynamically redistributes them across rear surround channels through 7.1 discrete outputs. By analyzing the original soundstage, it maintains accurate vocal positioning while preserving the surrounding ambient sound.
- 7.1ch Surround Sound System for TV: This 7.1ch sound bar includes 3 main channels and 4 surround sound speakers. SurroundX technology delivers precise audio with 99.99% detail accuracy offering a more immersive surround sound experience than a 5.1 surround sound system.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. VoiceMX boosts 120Hz-6kHz vocal range with dynamic EQ and gain control for clear dialogue in any scene.
- BassMX Technology: Powered by BassMX technology, the subwoofer features an 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 6.1L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. With extended bass response down to 45 Hz, it delivers deeper punch and better control for action scenes, explosions, and music beats. This larger acoustic chamber creates a wider soundstage and stronger physical impact than traditional compact subwoofers.
- 4 Adjustable Surround Speakers: The Aura A40 Pro soundbar features 2 wired front surround speakers connected directly to the soundbar, and 2 rear surround speakers with a hybrid connection—the right rear speaker connects wirelessly to the soundbar, while the left rear speaker connects via wire to the right rear speaker. This design ensures precise sound projection while minimizing cable clutter and maximizing space utilization.
How does it compare with a soundbar or component system?
| What matters | Mu-so Hekla all-in-one | Conventional premium Atmos soundbar | Component system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | One main cabinet combines amplification and multiple drivers; TV and network connections are built in. | Usually a simpler single-bar setup, though optional subwoofers or rear speakers may add boxes. | Requires separate components and more installation and cable planning. |
| Spatial sound and music | Reviewers praise its spacious presentation. TechRadar says stereo sources remain spatially processed, with no full off switch. | Varies by model; check whether its sound modes can be disabled for music. | Offers more scope to choose speakers and playback components to suit the listener. |
| Connections | HDMI eARC, optical, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.1 and RCA subwoofer output. | Varies by model; confirm the inputs and streaming features you need. | Varies by components; connections and format support depend on the chosen equipment. |
| Room fit | 100 cm wide, 29.5 cm deep, 11.8 cm high and 15.5 kg (Focal specifications). | Often less deep, but dimensions vary; add space for any separate subwoofer. | Needs room for speakers and electronics, which can be arranged separately. |
| Expansion | RCA subwoofer output; no included subwoofer or rear speakers reported by TechRadar. | Some models support matching subwoofers or surrounds; verify model compatibility. | Generally offers the most choice in upgrading or replacing individual components. |
| Price and buying route | TechRadar reported £2,999, US$3,599 and AU$6,499 on October 1, 2026. What Hi-Fi? reported £3,000 / US$3,600 on June 15, 2026; it says sales are through authorized Focal Powered By Naim retailers. | Prices and retailers vary by model and region. | Total cost depends on the selected equipment and region. |
The Hekla’s appeal is integration: a single main cabinet supplies the connection hub and a spacious presentation without a separate receiver and speaker package. A component system gives you more flexibility in speaker choice and upgrade paths. A conventional soundbar may be easier to place, but the comparison depends on the specific model. Focal’s subwoofer output allows one kind of expansion; the evidence here does not establish a rear-speaker expansion path for the Hekla.

Should you buy the Focal Mu-so Hekla?
It makes sense if
- You want one high-end cabinet to handle television, films, games and music.
- You value an immersive, spacious presentation and clear dialogue more than a purist stereo mode.
- Your furniture and TV setup can accommodate a 100 cm-wide, 29.5 cm-deep system weighing 15.5 kg.
- You are comfortable paying a premium for an integrated system rather than assembling separate components.
Look elsewhere if
- You lack room for a deep, heavy cabinet or need to avoid blocking the bottom of your TV.
- You require fully unprocessed two-channel playback.
- You want a built-in phono stage or the freedom to expand a conventional speaker system piece by piece.
- You need included rear speakers or a subwoofer rather than adding a subwoofer separately.
At launch, a Focal representative told What Hi-Fi? editor Kashfia Kabir that the goal was home cinema while retaining the brand’s hi-fi signature for music. The reviews suggest the Hekla aims to bridge those roles, but its size, price and stereo-processing behavior make a listening session especially useful before purchase.
