Indian fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and paint companies are unlikely to experience a uniform earnings slowdown in fiscal 2027 (April 2026–March 2027). The outcome will depend on each company’s raw-material mix, pricing power, demand sensitivity and ability to offset inflation through efficiency measures. Crisil Ratings forecasts organised FMCG revenue growth of 8–10% in FY27, but expects most of that increase to come from prices rather than volumes. Paint makers have already raised prices, yet crude-linked costs and intense competition could still delay margin recovery.
Why FY27 earnings will diverge
Three factors explain the uneven outlook. First, input baskets differ sharply by category: soaps, detergents, hair oils and shampoos are more exposed to crude-derived materials than food and beverages. Second, companies are passing costs through at different times and to different degrees. Third, higher prices can reduce consumption, encourage downtrading or shift buyers toward smaller packs.

These conditions mean a sector forecast should not be read as a prediction for every listed company. FY27 is still in progress, and the available figures combine an agency forecast, a first-quarter company release and commentary issued before second-quarter results.
What Crisil expects from organised FMCG
Crisil Ratings’ May 2026 assessment covered 74 FMCG companies representing about one-third of the sector’s estimated ₹6.6 lakh crore FY26 revenue. It forecast organised FMCG revenue growth of 8–10% in FY27, compared with about 8% in FY26.

| Measure | FY27 Crisil forecast | FY26 comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | 8–10% | About 8% |
| Realisation growth | 6–7% | Not stated for the same measure |
| Volume growth | 2–3% | 5–6% |
| EBITDA margin | Expected decline of 150–200 basis points from about 19% | About 19% |
The forecast implies that pricing, rather than underlying consumption, will do most of the work. Crisil expects volume growth to slow to 2–3% from 5–6% in FY26 while realisations rise 6–7%. That combination can keep reported revenue growing but leaves companies vulnerable if shoppers resist price increases.
Margin pressure is larger at the gross-profit level
Crisil expects gross margins for organised FMCG players to fall by 300–350 basis points because pass-through will be only partial. It expects advertising calibration, supply-chain negotiations and other operating measures to contain the EBITDA impact to 150–200 basis points, leaving margins around 17–18% for the rated group. The gross-margin and EBITDA estimates describe different stages of profitability and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Crisil Ratings Director Aditya Jhaver said: “Gross margins of organised FMCG players will decline 300–350 bps due to the rise in input costs, as pass-through of cost inflation will be partial amid competitive pressures and the risk of downtrading.”

Crisil estimates crude-linked inputs account for 30–40% of raw materials in personal and home care, compared with about 15% in food and beverages. Including packaging, crude-linked costs represent 25–30% of FMCG raw-material costs in its sector analysis.

- Personal and home care: Soaps, detergents, hair oils and shampoos have greater exposure to crude-derived chemicals and packaging.
- Food and beverages: Crude exposure is lower on the cited measure, although companies remain exposed to agricultural commodities, packaging, freight and currency movements.
- Mixed portfolios: A company’s result can sit between these ranges depending on its brand and product mix.
Household affordability is another swing factor. Crisil Senior Director Anuj Sethi said: “Household budgets, both rural and urban, will face inflationary headwinds this fiscal as average crude oil prices for this fiscal are projected at 30–35% higher on-year.” Crisil also identified below-normal monsoon risk for rural demand, while viewing the September 2025 GST rationalisation and higher welfare allocations as possible support. Those are the agency’s assessments, not confirmed FY27 outcomes.
Company commentary shows different responses
Economic Times/PTI reporting on 11 October 2026 described a likely Q2 FY27 margin squeeze from crude derivatives, packaging, other commodities and uneven rainfall. An ICICI Direct view cited in that report was that leading FMCG companies could maintain double-digit revenue growth while EBITDA growth lagged. This was a pre-result outlook, not reported Q2 performance.
Dabur
Dabur said inflation remained elevated in home and personal care, as well as over-the-counter and ethical products. It reported that price increases and savings initiatives partly offset the pressure, stating: “Operating margins were impacted by inflationary pressures during the quarter; partly offset by calibrated price increases and ongoing cost-saving initiatives.”

Marico said crude-linked derivatives had become more expensive, while copra remained about 35% below its peak and rangebound. Its commentary pointed to year-on-year gross-margin acceleration from product mix and copra costs, illustrating why one commodity can offset another within the same company.

Godrej Consumer Products
Godrej Consumer Products said pressure intensified across crude derivatives, palm oils and other raw materials: “Input cost pressures intensified during the quarter”. The statement indicates exposure, not a completed Q2 earnings result.
Paint makers face a separate but related squeeze
Paint companies also depend heavily on crude-linked materials, including solvents, resins, binders and phthalic anhydride. The denominator matters when comparing estimates:
| Estimate | Definition and attribution |
|---|---|
| About 40% | Motilal Oswal’s estimate of crude derivatives as a share of the paint raw-material basket. |
| About one-third | Economic Times description of crude derivatives as a share of total paint input costs. |
These percentages are not directly comparable because one refers to the raw-material basket and the other to total input costs. Motilal Oswal’s April 2, 2026 scenario work used a crude base of USD 68.5 per barrel and considered USD 85–110 scenarios. Those were analyst assumptions, not actual FY27 prices.
Pricing has helped, but timing is critical
Motilal Oswal’s June 10, 2026 sector update said paint makers had implemented cumulative price increases of about 10–12% around Q4 FY26. It reported Q4 FY26 paint-category revenue growth of 8% and EBITDA growth of 19%, helped by benign raw-material costs, while warning that FY27 could be affected by competition, geopolitical uncertainty, exchange-rate volatility and higher crude costs.

Grasim’s official results for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 provide a company-specific example. Birla Opus revenue was ₹1,661 crore, up 64% year on year and 17% sequentially. Grasim said industry-wide input costs had risen sharply and that price revisions had an overall 8.8% impact in Q1 FY27, describing the move as “calibrated price revisions.” Strong revenue growth in that quarter does not establish full-year margin performance.
Asian Paints reported Q1 FY27 consolidated net sales of ₹10,521.4 crore, up 17.9%, for the quarter ended 30 June 2026. The cited company page does not provide a matching breakdown of FY27 input exposure or a full-year margin outlook.
Inventory creates a lag
An Economic Times report quoted Kotak Securities analyst Amit Agarwal as saying paint companies typically held about two months of inventory. He said a $1 increase in crude had historically reduced EBITDA margins by 25 basis points if companies did not raise prices. That is a historical sensitivity under the stated condition, not a guaranteed current effect for every paint maker.
Asian Paints chief executive Amit Syngle said: “Given the current geopolitical situation, the whole crude impact can come in very fast.” A two-month inventory cycle can delay the income-statement effect in either direction: existing stock may cushion an initial increase, while replenishment can bring higher costs through later.

How to read FY27 results
Investors comparing companies should keep the following measures aligned:
- Input exposure: Separate crude-linked chemicals, agricultural commodities and packaging rather than using one sector-wide percentage.
- Pass-through timing: Record when price increases took effect and whether they covered the full cost increase.
- Volume response: Check whether higher realisations came with weaker volumes, smaller packs or downtrading.
- Margin level: Distinguish gross-margin movement from EBITDA-margin movement.
- Mix: Look for premiumisation, category shifts and geography, especially rural versus urban demand.
- Offsets: Track sourcing changes, advertising restraint, productivity savings and inventory effects.
The central question is not whether every company can raise prices. It is whether the increase arrives before costs hit the income statement, preserves enough volume, and leaves operating expenses flexible enough to protect EBITDA.
What is established—and what is not
The evidence supports a differentiated FY27 outlook: organised FMCG revenue is expected to grow mainly through realisations, margins face pressure, and crude exposure is higher in some categories than others. Paint companies have taken price action, but their cost recovery remains sensitive to crude, competition and inventory timing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are FMCG revenues expected to fall in FY27?
Not according to Crisil Ratings’ sector forecast. It expects organised FMCG revenue to grow 8–10%, but with slower 2–3% volume growth and a larger contribution from higher realisations.
Why can revenue rise while EBITDA falls?
Price increases can lift reported revenue while higher raw-material costs, delayed pass-through, weaker volumes and competitive spending compress gross and operating margins.
Are the paint-sector crude percentages directly comparable?
No. The roughly 40% estimate refers to crude derivatives as a share of the raw-material basket, while the roughly one-third estimate refers to total input costs.
