A flywheel UPS is usually suited to the seconds or a few minutes needed for standby generation to start and transfer. A battery UPS can be sized for materially longer autonomy, while a broader battery-energy-storage system (BESS) can also buffer AI loads and participate in demand-response programs. The right design depends on runtime, load behavior, redundancy, space, cooling, maintenance and project-level total cost of ownership.
The decision in one view
Both systems condition incoming power and keep critical equipment supplied when utility voltage collapses, sags or disappears. Their stored-energy media are different: a flywheel stores kinetic energy in a spinning rotor; a battery UPS stores electrochemical energy and uses an inverter to deliver AC power. That distinction affects how long the system can support the load, what maintenance is required and whether the equipment can provide services beyond emergency backup.

| Stored energy | Kinetic energy in a rotating rotor | Electrochemical energy in battery cells |
| Typical role | Short ride-through and power-quality support while standby generation starts; Seika describes generator pairing for longer coverage | Longer reserve duration; a BESS can also provide load buffering, demand response and ride-through, as described by NVIDIA |
| Runtime | Configuration- and load-dependent; commonly selected for the generator-start interval | Configuration- and load-dependent; designed for longer intervals when sufficient cells and conversion capacity are installed |
| Operations | No battery replacement program, but inspections, rotor, bearing and power-electronics service remain necessary | Battery health monitoring, thermal management and a replacement plan are required; no universal replacement interval is established here |
| Space and environment | Vendors claim compactness and no battery chemicals; verify the complete system footprint, clearances and cooling | Footprint and cooling depend on chemistry, enclosure, fire protection and duration; no apples-to-apples figure is established here |
| Economics | Assess capital cost, conversion losses, maintenance and generator architecture | Assess capital cost, losses, battery augmentation or replacement and any value from grid services |
There is no site-independent winner. A short interruption with a reliable generator transfer favors a flywheel architecture. A delayed generator, extended outage or planned grid-interactive operation favors batteries. Many large facilities use a layered design rather than treating the technologies as mutually exclusive.

Flywheel UPS operation
A motor accelerates a rotor and stores energy as rotational motion. During normal operation, the UPS power converter maintains the critical bus. When utility power is lost or degrades beyond the programmed limit, the rotating machine supplies the inverter so the load sees a continuous, conditioned output. As the rotor slows, available energy falls; the flywheel therefore bridges a defined interval rather than acting as an all-day generator.

The usual architecture pairs the flywheel with standby generators. The UPS carries the load while generator controls start, reach acceptable voltage and frequency, and the transfer equipment connects them. Once generator power is stable, the flywheel recharges. Seika presents this short-duration, generator-bridging role for its battery-free UPS products.
Battery UPS operation
A battery UPS charges cells while utility power is available. An inverter converts stored DC energy to the regulated AC output when the source fails. Adding cells, parallel strings and appropriately rated converters increases autonomy, subject to the load, allowable end-of-discharge voltage, temperature and redundancy arrangement. Batteries can therefore cover the generator-start interval or a longer outage, but longer autonomy increases cell count, heat, space, monitoring and replacement obligations.
Battery UPS is not the same as a BESS
“Battery UPS” usually means an uninterruptible power system dedicated to protecting a critical load and transferring immediately to stored energy. A BESS is a wider installation: battery racks, power-conversion equipment, telemetry, controls, protection and often an energy-management system. NVIDIA describes this integrated approach for AI factories, including load buffering, demand response and ride-through. A BESS may support the UPS function, but its controls, interconnection, fire protection and operating strategy must be engineered as a complete plant.

Runtime and generator response determine the architecture
Start with the question, “How long must the critical load remain supported before another source is guaranteed?” Define the interval from the first unacceptable utility event through generator start, voltage and frequency stabilization, transfer, and any required load ramp. Include the possibility that a generator fails to start or that a second start attempt is needed.

A historical comparison published by Titan Power cites about 15 seconds of full-load reserve for a flywheel versus at least 10 minutes for a battery at a comparable installed cost. That is a secondary, historical example—not a current universal specification. Actual autonomy depends on the model, initial state of charge or rotor speed, load profile, temperature, end-of-discharge limits and parallel configuration.
| Runtime question | What to establish | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Generator ready time | Measured start, stabilization and transfer time under site conditions | A flywheel can be adequate when the guaranteed interval is short and tightly controlled |
| Extended outage | Required minutes or hours before utility or generation is restored | Battery capacity or another long-duration source is normally required |
| Generator-start failure | Autonomy needed for alarms, retry logic and alternate-source transfer | Short nominal runtime may be insufficient if the first start is not successful |
| Variable AI load | Peak, average and transient demand at the UPS output | Size converters and stored energy for the real load curve, not only an average value |
Request manufacturer runtime curves at the exact output power, power factor, ambient temperature and redundancy state. A nameplate energy figure without those conditions cannot prove that the system will carry an AI cluster through the required event.
Why AI data centers make the comparison more demanding
Rapidly changing, high-density loads
AI training and inference halls can change power demand as accelerator groups start, synchronize or reduce activity. The UPS must regulate voltage and frequency while converters and cooling equipment respond to those changes. Ask for efficiency and thermal data across the expected load range, not only at the rated point. Confirm that the proposed topology supports the facility’s power factor, harmonic limits and short-circuit requirements.
Power quality can matter as much as outage duration
Some sites need protection from sags, swells, frequency excursions and repeated short disturbances even when the generator never starts. A flywheel can be attractive when frequent, brief events are more likely than long outages. Batteries can perform the same UPS function, but cell aging, recharge limits and thermal conditions must be included in the operating plan.

Grid-interactive services
A BESS connected to the facility’s energy-management and interconnection controls can be dispatched for load buffering or demand response when the grid is healthy, then reserved for ride-through. Those additional services can improve asset utilization, but they introduce controls, metering, dispatch priorities and contractual obligations that a conventional UPS does not have. Do not count projected grid revenue in a business case until the local tariff, interconnection rules and program availability are confirmed.
Flywheel UPS: where it fits and what to verify
Potential advantages
- Short, repeatable ride-through: The rotor supplies energy immediately while generators start, making it suitable for facilities with a dependable standby-power sequence.
- Recharge speed: Seika states less than three minutes to recharge for specified product families. Confirm whether that figure applies at your discharge depth and load.
- Vendor-stated efficiency and life: Seika lists up to 98% efficiency and more than 20 years of product life for specified products. These are vendor claims, not universal flywheel ratings; obtain test conditions, exclusions and service assumptions.
- Reduced battery-related burden: Eliminating battery strings can remove battery-room chemicals and scheduled cell replacement, although the flywheel, bearings, seals, controls and power electronics still require service.
Limits and engineering checks
- Stored energy declines as the rotor slows, so the guaranteed ride-through must cover the entire generator sequence, not just the first seconds.
- Mechanical systems need inspection and bearing or rotor service. Seika’s product material mentions inspections and bearing replacement; obtain the interval, labor requirements and outage procedure.
- Verify acoustic output, vibration isolation, floor loading, clearances, ventilation and fault containment for the actual room.
- Confirm operation over the project’s temperature range. Seika lists 0–40 °C for specified product lines; that is not a blanket rating for every installation.
Published capacity examples
Seika presents Active Power CleanSource Plus SMS figures of 300 kW for a single module and 300–2,400 kW for a multi-module system, with ratings varying by voltage and configuration. Active Power’s product page states ride-through of up to two minutes depending on configuration and includes its own footprint, efficiency and lifecycle-cost claims. Treat those numbers as product-specific: request the current data sheet, one-line diagram, overload curve and certified runtime for the proposed voltage and redundancy arrangement.
Battery UPS and BESS: where they fit and what to verify
Potential advantages
- Longer autonomy: Additional battery capacity can cover a delayed generator, an orderly shutdown window or an outage lasting substantially longer than a generator-start interval.
- Flexible sizing: Strings and racks can be configured for the required energy and power, subject to converter limits, thermal design and space.
- Broader operating roles: A BESS can buffer facility demand, participate in demand response and provide ride-through when the controls reserve adequate state of charge, as outlined by NVIDIA.
- No rotating mass: Battery systems avoid rotor bearings and mechanical vibration, but they replace those concerns with cell monitoring, thermal management and safety controls.
Limits and engineering checks
- Battery capacity and power capability change with temperature, age, discharge rate and state of health. Require end-of-life autonomy, not only new-system autonomy.
- Plan for battery monitoring, string balancing, thermal alarms, isolation, fire detection and the procedures for a failed module or rack.
- Replacement timing is chemistry-, warranty- and environment-dependent. The available product material does not establish a universal interval, so require a supplier-specific schedule and budget.
- Long-duration installations can require substantial room, HVAC, fire protection and electrical infrastructure. Compare the complete installation, not the rack footprint alone.
- If the BESS will provide grid services, define minimum reserve state of charge, dispatch authority, islanding behavior, communications and recovery after an event.
Generator, transfer and redundancy design
UPS storage cannot compensate for an underspecified standby-power architecture. Document the sequence of operations for utility loss, generator start, synchronization, transfer, load acceptance, generator failure and return to utility. The sequence should state which loads remain on UPS, which are shed, and how long each source is expected to operate.
Match storage architecture to the required availability target. In a redundant UPS arrangement, determine whether each module has its own flywheel or battery strings, whether a common BESS creates a shared failure point, and how maintenance is performed without losing the required capacity. Analyze breakers, bypass paths, switchgear, controls and communications along with the storage device. A nominal N+1 label is not enough if a shared bus, cooling loop or control network can defeat the redundancy.

Space, cooling and environmental conditions
Compare the entire installed envelope: UPS cabinets, storage modules, switchgear, transformers, ventilation, HVAC, fire protection, maintenance clearances and pathways for replacement. Flywheel vendors often claim a smaller footprint and lower cooling burden because there are no battery chemicals; validate that claim at the system level, including heat from the converter and any required room conditioning.
For batteries, request heat-release data at normal operation, recharge and fault conditions. Confirm the permitted temperature and humidity range, altitude derating, seismic requirements and enclosure classification. For flywheels, confirm floor loading, vibration, acoustic limits, rotor containment and the effect of ambient temperature on available runtime. Seika’s 0–40 °C figure applies to specified product lines, so it should be treated as a design input to verify rather than a generic industry rating.

Flywheel maintenance plan
- Schedule visual and electrical inspections, firmware and control checks, and trend reviews for speed, temperature and alarms.
- Define bearing, seal and rotor service intervals, parts availability and the time required to place the module in bypass.
- Test the complete sequence with generators and transfer equipment; a healthy rotor does not prove that the system will transfer correctly.
Battery maintenance plan
- Monitor cell voltage, temperature, impedance or other manufacturer-specified health indicators and investigate imbalance before it reduces autonomy.
- Budget for staged replacement or augmentation, recycling and disposal, and the labor and downtime needed to exchange strings or racks.
- Test discharge performance under controlled conditions and verify that the battery-management system, inverter and facility controls respond to alarms as intended.
Maintenance savings should be calculated from actual labor, parts, test outages and replacement policies. A claim that one technology requires less service is not a lifecycle result until those costs are modeled for the site.
Total cost of ownership: build a project model
Schneider Electric identifies total cost of ownership as a meaningful comparison measure. Use a model that includes, at minimum:
Best Value
- Initial equipment: UPS modules, storage, converters, switchgear, controls, monitoring and required redundancy.
- Facility work: Structural reinforcement, rooms or containers, HVAC, ventilation, fire protection, cabling and commissioning.
- Energy losses: Conversion losses at the actual load profile, including lightly loaded periods and recharge energy.
- Maintenance: Inspections, testing, service contracts, spare parts, bearing work or battery-health programs.
- Replacement and end of life: Battery strings or racks, flywheel components, recycling, disposal and labor.
- Outage risk: The financial impact of insufficient autonomy, failed generator starts, maintenance bypasses and a common-mode failure.
- Optional value: Verified demand-response or load-buffering revenue for a BESS, after accounting for reserve requirements and additional controls.
Model at least the expected load, minimum load, peak load, temperature range and end-of-life capacity. Ask suppliers to provide efficiency curves, runtime curves, maintenance schedules, warranty assumptions and a transparent calculation workbook. Vendor savings claims should be treated as hypotheses until they are recalculated with your load and utility data.
A practical selection process
- Write the ride-through requirement. State the critical kW and kVA, power factor, allowable voltage and frequency limits, minimum ambient conditions, and the guaranteed seconds or minutes until another source is available.
- Measure the generator sequence. Record real start, stabilization and transfer times, including failed-start scenarios and load-shedding logic. Do not use a nominal manufacturer start time without site validation.
- Characterize the load. Capture peak, average, step changes, harmonics, cooling load and the effect of AI workload scheduling. Size for the measured curve and required overload performance.
- Choose the operating role. Select a flywheel when the primary need is short ride-through and power-quality support. Select a battery UPS when longer autonomy is mandatory. Consider a BESS when load buffering or demand response is a documented requirement, not merely a possible future benefit.
- Design redundancy. Map independent modules, strings, buses, controls, cooling and maintenance bypasses. Identify every shared component that could defeat the target availability.
- Check the environment. Verify floor loading, vibration, acoustic limits, temperature, humidity, fire protection, clearances and service access for the complete installation.
- Build the lifecycle model. Use the same evaluation period, discount assumptions, energy price, maintenance labor and replacement policy for both technologies.
- Validate with testing. Require factory and site tests that demonstrate utility loss, generator failure, transfer, recharge, alarms, bypass operation and return to normal. Test at representative AI load conditions where practical.
Illustrative choices
Facility with a dependable, fast generator
If measured transfer completes within the flywheel’s guaranteed autonomy and outages are generally brief, a flywheel can avoid a large battery room while providing continuous ride-through. The design still needs a contingency for a failed generator start and a plan for mechanical inspections.
Facility that must ride through a delayed source
If the generator may take many minutes to stabilize, or the site requires an orderly shutdown during a longer utility outage, specify battery capacity for that interval at end of life and the worst expected temperature. A flywheel sized only for the first seconds would not satisfy this requirement.
AI factory pursuing load flexibility
If the operator has a confirmed demand-response tariff and controls team, a BESS can combine ride-through with load buffering. The specification should reserve enough state of charge for an unplanned outage and define who can dispatch the system, how quickly it returns to reserve, and what happens when communications fail.
Questions to put in every supplier request
- What runtime is guaranteed at the stated kW, kVA, power factor, temperature and end-of-life condition?
- Which efficiency figure applies at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% load, and how was it measured?
- What are the recharge time, overload curve, short-circuit contribution and maximum number of successive events?
- Which components require scheduled replacement, at what interval, and with what expected outage or bypass time?
- How are alarms, state of health, state of charge or rotor condition exposed to the facility-management system?
- What are the floor-loading, clearance, vibration, acoustic, HVAC and fire-protection requirements?
- How is redundancy preserved during a module, string, converter, cooling or control failure?
- Which claims are vendor estimates, which are independently tested, and which certifications apply to the proposed configuration?
- For a BESS, what reserve state of charge, dispatch controls, interconnection approvals and demand-response assumptions are included?
- Can the supplier provide a project-specific total-cost model with assumptions that your engineering team can audit?
Bottom line
Use a flywheel UPS when a well-characterized generator can take over within a short, guaranteed interval and the priority is reliable ride-through with minimal battery infrastructure. Use a battery UPS when the critical load needs longer reserve or a controlled shutdown window. Consider a BESS when the facility can justify additional controls and interconnection work for load buffering or grid services. The defensible choice comes from measured runtime, generator behavior, AI load data, redundancy and a transparent lifecycle model—not from a universal claim that one storage medium is better.
