What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?
FZ1073 was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, when, according to the UAE Attorney-General’s account, the co-pilot attacked the captain in the flight deck with a crash axe and attempted to seize the controls. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Contemporaneous reporting by The National says the captain opened the cockpit door and passengers and another pilot helped subdue the co-pilot and stabilize the aircraft. The National also reported that Captain Smit Machchhar told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “In that moment I was fighting for my life.” These details come from media reporting, rather than the Attorney-General’s announcement.
Did the UAE say the co-pilot attempted a terrorist act?
Yes. UAE Attorney-General Counsellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi described the incident as a planned attempted terrorist act. That is the UAE’s characterization of the alleged attack, not a final legal judgment or a settled explanation of motive. In its October 3 statement, the UAE said investigators were still examining the full circumstances, physical and digital evidence, motive, and any possible links. Al Shamsi said, “The final results will be announced upon the conclusion of all necessary procedures.”

Where did the plane land, and how many people were aboard?
The plane landed at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the incident. Published reports give conflicting figures for those aboard: the Associated Press reported 182 people, while The National reported 172 passengers and crew. The accounts do not establish a single reconciled total, so neither figure should be treated as definitive.
Who was the co-pilot, and what is confirmed about his motive?
The UAE Attorney-General’s announcement did not identify the co-pilot or state a motive. The Associated Press reported that three people familiar with the situation, speaking anonymously, identified the suspect as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami. AP also reported claims of an earlier flying restriction in Oman related to concerns about extremist views. Those claims are attributed to anonymous sources; they are not established in the UAE statement, and the UAE said its investigation into motive and possible links was ongoing.

What does the incident establish about aviation security?
It establishes that investigators are examining an alleged attack by a crew member; it does not establish a broader failure in aviation-security procedures. In an October 2 analysis, AP reported that the incident raised questions about crew vetting, flight-deck access, and the handling of distress calls. Former Israeli national security adviser Eyal Hulata said the possibility of a threat from a pilot or crew member had not been considered likely before this event. Aviation security expert Menachem Bachrach cautioned against rushing to tighten security, saying it was possible someone had not followed existing protocols. These are expert perspectives, not findings about what happened on FZ1073.
