Neither outlet reported official confirmation of his identity. Fox News separately reported that he was 29, citing an unnamed Middle Eastern source; AP and Reuters did not independently corroborate his age.
What is known about the co-pilot’s identity?
The name and nationality come from anonymous-source reporting, not a public identification by UAE authorities or Flydubai in the coverage reviewed. AP used the spelling Hamam al-Hammami, citing three people familiar with the situation, including a Gulf diplomat and a Western diplomat. Reuters used Hammam al-Hammami, citing a source with direct knowledge and another briefed on the investigation. Al Jazeera also noted that officials had not confirmed the identity.
Fox News reported that the co-pilot was 29, attributing the age to a Middle Eastern source. That age was not independently corroborated in the cited AP and Reuters identity reports, so it should be treated as a reported claim rather than an established official detail.
What do officials say he is accused of doing?
UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi said investigators found that the co-pilot attempted a terrorist attack, attacked Captain Smit Machchhar with the cockpit crash axe and tried to take control of the aircraft. That is the UAE’s stated investigative position, not a final court finding. The investigation, including the question of motive, was continuing in the October 3 reporting.

AP also reported, citing a regional official and a person familiar with the matter, that Oman had barred the co-pilot from flying over concerns about alleged extremist views. Those sources gave no details about the views. The report does not establish that allegation as proven, and neither it nor the current official account establishes a motive or militant-group connection.

Al Jazeera, citing FlightRadar24 tracking data, reported a descent of more than 17,000 feet in about two minutes. That tracking figure describes the aircraft’s reported descent; it does not by itself establish the precise sequence or cause of the incident. Al Jazeera reported that two reserve pilots took control and landed the plane.
Machchhar later described opening the cockpit door after he had fallen to the floor. In an account reported by Al Jazeera, he said: “When I was down, I could feel that the aircraft was plummeting, and I knew this is the last chance to do something.” He said he managed to open the door, after which people entered.

What is reported about his background—and what remains unverified?
AP reported that Royal Air Maroc said the man completed three months of theoretical training in 2025 but was not selected for employment. Buckinghamshire New University said he completed a distance-learning aviation-management course and “did not undertake any pilot training.” These statements provide background; they do not establish why the attack occurred or demonstrate the quality of any airline’s vetting.
- Identity: AP and Reuters reported the name and Omani nationality based on unnamed sources; officials had not publicly confirmed the identity in the cited coverage.
- Age: Fox News reported 29, citing an unnamed source. AP and Reuters did not independently corroborate that figure.
- Prior flying restrictions: AP attributed the account of an Oman flying bar and alleged extremist-view concerns to unnamed sources; it did not provide details or establish the allegation as fact.
- Motive or group ties: The investigation was ongoing. AP’s anonymous Gulf diplomat said investigators had not found militant-group connections at that point.
Oman had not publicly commented in AP’s report. Because the identity, age and background claims rely on anonymous sources or attributed institutional statements, they should not be treated as equivalent to official confirmation or a court finding.
