Flu activity is increasing, but the latest national data show low activity overall. For the week ending September 26, 2026, 3.4% of clinical laboratory respiratory specimens tested positive for influenza, according to the CDC. Reports of earlier increases are concentrated in parts of the West—not evidence that the whole country is having an early or severe flu season.
If you have not had this season’s flu vaccine, consider arranging it soon. The CDC prefers September or October for most people who need one dose, but says vaccination can continue after October while flu viruses circulate and unexpired vaccine is available. October is not a hard deadline.

What does “flu season started early” mean?
It describes a regional signal, not a nationwide surge. The CDC’s weekly surveillance report for the week ending September 26, 2026, said influenza activity was low nationally but increasing; 3.4% of tested clinical laboratory respiratory specimens were positive. The report is preliminary and activity can vary by location. CDC Week 38 surveillance report

Should you get a flu vaccine now?
The CDC recommends seasonal flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. For most people who need one dose, September and October are preferred. If you have not yet been vaccinated, the CDC says to continue getting vaccinated after October while flu viruses circulate and unexpired vaccine is available. That makes “consider getting vaccinated soon” reasonable, but an early rise in some areas is not a reason to assume you have missed your chance or that a specific date is a cutoff. Vaccine timing and availability can differ locally.

Which vaccine is appropriate for you?
Flu vaccines are available for people aged 6 months and older, but licensed products differ in age eligibility and suitability for individual health circumstances. The CDC does not preferentially recommend one age-appropriate vaccine over another for people younger than 65 in its public summary; for adults aged 65 and older, it describes preferential options. Ask a healthcare professional which product fits your age and circumstances, especially if you have an allergy, a possible contraindication, questions related to pregnancy, or a complex medical history. What changed in the 2026–2027 vaccine?
All three vaccine virus components were updated from the 2025–2026 season. The CDC lists separate recommended components for egg-based vaccines and for cell-based or recombinant vaccines. These are composition recommendations, not evidence that this season’s vaccine has a particular effectiveness rate. CDC 2026–2027 flu season information

How severe might this season be?
The CDC’s September 2026 outlook said the season was likely to be moderate in severity, but with low to moderate confidence. It also emphasized that severity is difficult to predict before the season develops. A localized early increase does not settle what the full season will look like nationally. CDC 2026–2027 respiratory disease season outlook
The sources cited here do not establish a 2026–2027 U.S. flu vaccine effectiveness estimate. Effectiveness can vary, and figures from a prior season should not be treated as a measurement for this one. Vaccination is intended to reduce risk; it cannot guarantee that someone will not get flu or develop complications. As Dr. Ryan Stanton of the American College of Emergency Physicians told the Associated Press, vaccination is “just like the seat belt in your car, it decreases risk.”
