Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Leonida, a fictional state built from Florida influences rather than a literal copy of the state. The strongest identifiable matches are in Vice City’s Miami and South Beach: Art Deco hotels around Lummus Park, Ocean Drive landmarks, causeways and recognizable skyline districts. The Leonida Keys and swampy Grassrivers clearly evoke the Florida Keys and Everglades, but no developer-confirmed, one-to-one map has been published for every region.
Leonida is fictional, but its geography is recognizably Florida-inspired
Rockstar’s Leonida is a made-up state, and Vice City is its best-known urban center. GamesRadar’s current overview identifies six named regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Those names establish the game’s internal geography; they do not mean that each region corresponds exactly to a real Florida county, town or park.

The distinction matters because the game compresses a large state into a navigable open world. Coastlines, highways, neighborhoods and landmarks can be moved closer together, resized or rearranged to support missions and travel. A screenshot that resembles a real place may therefore represent an artistic reconstruction rather than a survey-accurate location.

The most reliable identifications come from trailer imagery that can be compared with fixed Miami architecture. Broader claims—such as treating every swamp as the Everglades or assigning a particular Panhandle town to Port Gellhorn—are interpretations unless Rockstar confirms them.

The clearest real-world matches are in Miami and South Beach
Art Deco hotels around Lummus Park
In an analysis published by Axios on December 5, 2023, Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, examined the first GTA VI trailer. He identified the opening sequence as South Beach and recognized the Loews and Royal Palm hotels, along with 1500 Ocean Drive, around Lummus Park.
These are unusually specific matches: named buildings with distinctive façades appear in a recognizable beachfront setting. They provide stronger evidence than a general impression that a palm-lined street “looks like Miami.” The in-game versions are still adaptations, so matching one façade does not prove that every neighboring lot follows the real street plan.
Ocean Drive landmarks farther south
Ciraldo also identified the Breakwater Hotel and Hotel Victor on Ocean Drive. In Leonida, those buildings are renamed the Boardwalk and Hotel Dixon. The changed names show how Rockstar can preserve a building’s visual identity while creating fictional institutions and signage for the game world.
Ocean Drive is useful for landmark comparison because its Art Deco hotels have strong silhouettes, setbacks and color schemes that remain recognizable even in a moving trailer shot. Look for the building’s shape and position relative to the beach, roadway and adjacent hotels rather than relying on a sign alone.
Causeways, Brickell and Wynwood
Axios’ trailer analysis also notes the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, plus views toward Brickell and Wynwood. These references place Vice City within a broader Miami metropolitan setting: barrier-island nightlife, causeway traffic and the contrasting high-rise and arts-district skylines of the mainland.

Unlike a single hotel, a skyline view is not a one-building match. Towers can be fictionalized, omitted or shifted while still communicating the character of Miami. Treat these vistas as city-level geographic evidence, not as proof that every visible tower has a real counterpart.
What the evidence can legitimately tell you
When comparing Leonida with Florida, use three levels of confidence:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identifiable landmark match: A named building, street or engineered structure has a distinctive appearance and has been recognized by a qualified local expert. The South Beach hotels, 1500 Ocean Drive, the Breakwater and Hotel Victor fall into this category.
- Broad geographic or ecological analogue: The setting shares a recognizable environmental character—such as tropical islands or extensive wetlands—but no exact coordinate-level match is established. The Leonida Keys and Grassrivers fit here.
- Speculative regional or cultural analogy: A name, activity or visual mood suggests a part of Florida, yet the available evidence does not identify a particular real location. Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park should be treated this way.
This framework prevents a common mistake: turning a plausible resemblance into an official map. A region can be Florida-inspired without being modeled on one town.
The six Leonida regions and their Florida readings
| Leonida region | In-game character described by available coverage | Most defensible Florida comparison | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Major coastal city with South Beach-style districts, causeways and Miami-like skylines | Miami, especially South Beach, Ocean Drive, Brickell and Wynwood | High for named trailer landmarks; broader city layout remains adapted |
| Leonida Keys | Island-chain region south of the mainland city | Florida Keys as a geographic concept | Plausible broad analogue; no exact one-to-one confirmation |
| Grassrivers | Swampy, water-rich landscape | Everglades-like wetlands and South Florida backcountry | Plausible landscape analogy; exact boundaries unconfirmed |
| Port Gellhorn | Area associated with cheap motels and strip clubs | A generic Florida roadside or coastal tourist corridor | No specific Florida town established |
| Ambrosia | Rural and industrial territory associated with a biker gang | Rural Florida industrial outskirts as a broad setting | No specific town established |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Wilderness-filled northern region | A fictionalized Florida wilderness setting | No exact real park match confirmed |
Vice City: the strongest anchor for the whole map
Vice City is the only region with multiple named, expert-identified buildings in the available evidence. Its coastal urban form also explains why the game can move quickly between nightlife streets, beaches, mainland districts and causeways. The result is a concentrated version of the Miami area rather than a block-for-block reconstruction.
Leonida Keys: an obvious idea, not an official translation
The name Leonida Keys invites comparison with the Florida Keys, the long chain of islands linked by roads and bridges. That reading is geographically sensible: an island region in a Florida-inspired state naturally recalls the archipelago. However, the available coverage does not include a Rockstar statement saying that each island, settlement or bridge reproduces a specific Key. Use “evokes the Florida Keys” rather than naming Key West, Marathon or another town as the confirmed model.

Grassrivers: wetlands in the Everglades tradition
GamesRadar describes Grassrivers as swampy, while the South Florida panorama discussed by Axios includes Everglades imagery. Muddy channels, sawgrass-like expanses and airboat-country scenery therefore make an Everglades comparison reasonable. It remains an ecological analogy: the evidence does not establish that Grassrivers traces the Everglades’ actual boundary, roads or communities.
Port Gellhorn: roadside Florida without a named counterpart
Available descriptions emphasize cheap motels and strip clubs. Those details suggest a deliberately down-at-heel tourist or highway strip, a type of landscape found in many parts of Florida. They do not identify a particular Panhandle town, and assigning one would go beyond the evidence. The useful observation is about land use and atmosphere, not a hidden city name.
Ambrosia: rural-industrial space shaped for fiction
Ambrosia is described as rural and industrial and linked to a biker gang. That combination can be read as a fictional composite of peripheral roads, work yards and small settlements rather than a portrait of one real municipality. No source in the available material ties it to a specific Florida county or city.
Mount Kalaga National Park: keep the comparison general
The northern region is characterized by wilderness. Florida has protected natural areas, but the available reporting does not confirm an exact park match for Mount Kalaga National Park. Calling it a fictional wilderness zone is more accurate than labeling it a recreation of any named national or state park.

Even the strongest landmark matches should be read as designed references. Ciraldo told Axios, “The architecture looks very realistic, though some buildings are out of order or on the wrong block!” That observation captures the trade-off: recognizable architecture can coexist with rearranged geography.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Open-world design favors readable routes, varied missions and short travel times. A hotel may be moved to improve a beachfront drive; a causeway may connect districts more directly than in reality; and a skyline may combine towers that are separated by miles in Miami. These changes do not weaken the Florida influence. They show that Leonida is a playable interpretation built from selected visual and cultural cues.
What Rockstar has not confirmed
- No detailed, official region-by-region Florida inspiration map is established in the available material.
- There is no confirmed one-to-one mapping that assigns every Leonida neighborhood to a real Florida municipality.
- The Leonida Keys have not been officially matched island by island to the Florida Keys.
- Grassrivers has not been confirmed as a literal recreation of the Everglades.
- Port Gellhorn has not been tied to a named Panhandle town.
- Ambrosia has not been tied to a named rural or industrial county.
- Mount Kalaga National Park has not been matched to a specific real park.
Those limits are useful, not frustrating: they separate what viewers can identify in the trailer from what remains an informed reading of the setting.
How to assess a new GTA VI location claim
- Start with a fixed feature. Look for a distinctive hotel façade, bridge profile, causeway alignment, street sign or skyline arrangement rather than a generic palm tree or beach.
- Check whether a qualified source names it. The South Beach identifications carry more weight because Daniel Ciraldo, a Miami preservation specialist, compared the trailer with local landmarks in Axios’ report.
- Separate building identity from map accuracy. A recognizable hotel can appear in a fictional block. Confirming the building does not confirm the surrounding street grid.
- Classify the landscape separately. Swamps, islands and rural roads support broad ecological comparisons, but they rarely prove a precise location.
- Look for developer confirmation before using “based on.” Without an official statement, describe a place as Florida-inspired, Everglades-like or evocative of the Keys.
Current game context for location-focused players
GamesRadar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as confirmed platforms and reports physical preorder availability. Platform listings and editions can change, so check the current retailer and Rockstar information before purchasing. The geography described here comes from trailer analysis and regional descriptions; it does not depend on a particular physical edition.
The bottom line on Leonida’s real Florida inspirations
Vice City’s South Beach is the most firmly grounded part of Leonida’s Florida identity. The Loews and Royal Palm hotels, 1500 Ocean Drive, the Breakwater, Hotel Victor, Lummus Park, Ocean Drive, the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, Brickell and Wynwood provide concrete Miami reference points identified in trailer analysis. Beyond that urban core, the Leonida Keys and Grassrivers are convincing interpretations of island and wetland environments, while Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park remain fictional regions without confirmed town-for-town counterparts. Read Leonida as a compressed, rearranged Florida—not an unofficial complete map of the state.
