Flock Safety, the Atlanta-based maker of license-plate-reader cameras and surveillance software, reportedly plans to let go of about 270 employees at the end of October 2026. Reuters, citing people with direct knowledge of the plan, put that figure at about 18% of a workforce of roughly 1,500. The report was published October 8, 2026. Flock has not made the plan public, and the company declined to comment to Reuters.
The cuts follow a voluntary separation program that Flock opened in September. WIRED reported that the program was announced internally, and the reporting does not say how many employees accepted buyouts. Read the layoff plan as a report from anonymous sources, not as a completed or company-confirmed event.

What is established, and what is not
Two outlets cover the story, and they differ in how they sourced it. Reuters relied on unnamed people with direct knowledge of an unpublished plan. The September voluntary separation program
WIRED reported that Flock announced a voluntary separation program in mid-September. Applications opened on Friday, September 18, 2026, and closed on October 2. Employees were expected to learn whether their applications were accepted on October 9, according to that report. Because that date comes from the September reporting, it is an expected date, not a confirmed outcome.

What the offer reportedly included
- Payment: Some offers were reported to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. The reporting does not give a formula, and it does not say whether the amount varied by role or tenure.
- Health coverage: Several months of coverage, as described in the internal email.
- Stock options: Up to two years after separation to exercise vested options, as described in the internal email.
How Flock described the program
According to WIRED’s account of the internal announcement, Flock said the program offered employees “greater agency” and reflected “transparency, respect, and choice.” Those words are the company’s own characterization of the offer. They are not an independent assessment of its terms.

Two groups, two departure dates
The reporting describes two separate groups, and they should not be merged. WIRED reported that most employees whose voluntary applications were accepted were expected to leave by October 29, and that some might be asked to stay one to three more months. Reuters described the involuntary cuts as taking effect at the end of October. Neither outlet says whether the two groups overlap, so do not assume that every person affected by the planned cuts is a volunteer, or the reverse.

Context reported around the cuts
Both outlets place the cuts against public pressure on Flock’s business. None of these points is a company explanation for the October plan.

- Contracts: WIRED’s sources said some customer contracts were not renewed or were dropped, which could affect revenue goals.
- Vandalism: According to the same sources, damage to camera equipment had increased expenses.
- Public opinion: A Reuters/Ipsos poll found 38% of respondents supported and 47% opposed the use of Flock cameras in their community. Reuters’ excerpt does not give field dates or sample details, so treat the figures as a single poll rather than a trend.
- City and county decisions: An advocacy group, as WIRED reported, counted 93 city and county governments that cut ties with Flock in August 2026 alone. That is the group’s count, not one verified independently in the reporting.
- Leadership comment: WIRED reported that CEO Garrett Langley said, on an All-In podcast appearance, that “the biggest damage” from the backlash had been “internal morale.” This is a leadership view of the company’s situation, not a stated reason for the layoffs.
- Source view on buyouts: WIRED reported that, in one source’s view, layoffs were almost certain without voluntary buyouts. That is one person’s assessment.
What remains unknown
- How many employees accepted buyouts, and whether the number of accepted volunteers changes the size of the involuntary cuts.
- Which teams and locations are affected.
- Final separation dates for each individual, and any severance terms for the involuntary cuts.
- Whether the company will confirm the plan or release its own headcount figures.
