Flock CEO says its microphones detect “just gunshots.” Flock’s website says different

No—not literally. Flock’s co-founder and CEO Garrett Langley told TechCrunch that the company’s microphones detect “just gunshots.” However, Flock’s own documentation says its audio system can also recognize fireworks, sideshows, potential car crashes and other disruptive public-safety events. The narrowest accurate reading is that gunfire is the primary use and that the system is not designed to monitor speech; “just gunshots” is not a complete description of what the documented technology can classify.

What Flock’s CEO said, and what the company’s documents say

In a TechCrunch interview published October 14, 2026, Langley answered a question about broader audio capabilities with: “It’s just gunshots.” The same report quoted Flock spokesperson Paris Lewbel describing a wider scope: “Flock’s gunshot detection technology is primarily used to detect gunfire but is also capable of detecting fireworks, sideshows, and potential car crashes.”

Flock’s official FAQ likewise says its Gunshot and Audio Detection product recognizes events beyond gunfire, including fireworks, sideshows and other disruptive community events. It says the detection library can expand to meet customer needs. That creates a clear wording mismatch: the CEO’s sentence can be understood as emphasizing the system’s main purpose or denying speech surveillance, but it conflicts with the broader event list Flock publishes for the product.

What the audio system is documented to detect

Question What Flock’s published explanation says
Primary event Gunshots or gunfire.
Other listed sound events Fireworks, sideshows, potential car crashes and other disruptive community events.
Speech and language Flock says the system does not analyze speech, transcribe language, identify voices or allow searches for spoken words.
Live listening Flock says customers do not receive a live audio feed.
Event library Flock says its detection library can expand for customer needs; the sources do not establish that every customer has the same list.

Flock says the system is intended to detect specific public-safety events, “not speech, gatherings, or behavior.” That distinction matters: an event classifier can recognize an acoustic pattern without attempting to understand what people are saying.

How Flock says processing and retention work

Flock Safety’s explanation, published July 10, 2026 and updated August 13, 2026, describes sensors that continuously examine sound in rolling windows of about three seconds on an on-device processor. The company distinguishes this brief analysis from storing or transmitting everything the microphone encounters.

  1. The sensor analyzes a short audio window locally.
  2. If the sound does not match a qualifying event, Flock says that audio is not recorded, stored or transmitted.
  3. If the sound matches a qualifying event, the system records and encrypts a short clip.
  4. The system estimates the event’s location and sends an alert for review.

Under that description, most analyzed audio is discarded almost immediately. A qualifying clip could nevertheless contain a few spoken words immediately before or after the triggering sound. Flock says that incidental capture does not mean the product is listening for conversations: it says there is no speech recognition, transcription, voice identification or customer-accessible live feed.

Can the microphones hear conversations?

They must briefly sense surrounding sound to classify it, so “never hears any speech” would be too broad. If someone is talking near a suspected gunshot, crash or other qualifying event, a short section of that conversation could fall inside the saved clip. Flock’s stated limitation is about what the system analyzes and retains for its product purpose, not a guarantee that no human voice can ever enter an event recording.

Flock says the system does not interpret language, identify who is speaking or support searches based on spoken words. The available documentation does not independently verify how often incidental speech appears in retained clips, how long each customer keeps those clips or whether retention settings differ by deployment.

The human-distress feature was removed

Flock says it previously ran a limited pilot that detected human distress, including screaming, for a small number of customers. After community consultation, the company says it removed that capability. TechCrunch reported that Flock changed earlier references to “screaming” to “sounds of human distress” and later said the feature was pulled from customers that had tried it.

This history is relevant to the “just gunshots” wording. The system’s documented scope has changed over time, and the company has acknowledged at least one non-gunfire detection experiment rather than presenting the product as permanently limited to a single sound.

Where Raven and vehicle data fit

Raven is an installed public-safety audio product that can be paired with Flock’s Falcon license-plate readers. Flock’s 2023 product announcement described Raven as more than a gunshot-only system, while a 2022 company announcement said the platform could expand to sounds such as gunshots and illegal street racing.

According to Flock’s current explanation, a confirmed audio event can be used to surface vehicles seen entering or leaving the area around the time of the sound through nearby license-plate cameras. A law-enforcement or security professional reviews that information; Flock describes it as an investigative starting point, not an automatic enforcement action. The audio alert does not itself prove which vehicle, if any, was involved.

Does the “just gunshots” claim mislead?

As a literal description of capability, it is incomplete. Flock’s own FAQ and spokesperson identify several additional event classes. As a description of intended primary use, or as shorthand for “the system is not a conversation-monitoring product,” it is more defensible—but that context was not included in the quoted sentence.

The practical answer to the reader’s question is therefore two-part: Flock says gunfire is the main target, and Flock also says the same audio platform can classify other disruptive sounds. Calling it a gunshot detector does not establish that gunshots are the only sounds it can recognize.

What is known—and what is not

  • Flock says fireworks, sideshows, potential car crashes and other disruptive events can be detected in addition to gunshots.
  • Flock says analysis occurs in approximately three-second rolling windows on the device, with non-qualifying audio discarded.
  • Flock says qualifying clips are encrypted and retained for alerts, and that no live customer audio feed is provided.
  • Flock says speech, language and voices are not analyzed, although incidental words may occur in a saved clip around a qualifying sound.
  • Flock says its former human-distress pilot was removed after community consultation.
  • No independent accuracy rate, false-alert rate, total sensor count, customer-by-customer retention schedule or universal event library is established by the cited sources.

Flock says its sensors distinguish fireworks and similar sounds from gunfire to reduce false alerts, while also acknowledging that no acoustic system is perfect. Those claims describe the company’s design and policy position; they are not independent performance measurements.
