Pixel Fold models are rated IPX8 at the factory, while Galaxy Z Fold6 and Fold7 report IP48, but neither rating makes a phone waterproof or permanently dust-resistant.
How long does a foldable phone screen last?
No reliable cross-brand number answers that question. The manufacturer and repair documents available for Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Galaxy Z Fold6, and Galaxy Z Fold7 do not establish a guaranteed number of years, a maximum number of openings, or a standardized laboratory cycle-life result for the inner flexible display. A promise such as “this screen will last five years” or “one million folds” would therefore be broader than the evidence supports.

Samsung’s environmental reports for Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Fold7 do specify seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates from each model’s global launch. That is a software-support commitment. It does not estimate how long the display, hinge, protective film, or battery will remain usable.

In practice, lifespan is affected by contamination, pressure, impact, hinge wear, moisture exposure, repairs, and how the factory-applied protector is treated. A phone kept clean and opened normally may remain serviceable for years, but the available documentation cannot turn that observation into a universal guarantee.

Why flexible screens need different care
Google’s Pixel Fold safety guidance says flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens. Its specific warning is to avoid contact with crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects. A fingernail, grit particle, or fragment trapped at the hinge can concentrate force on the inner panel when the phone closes.
Before closing the phone
- Look across the inner display for sand, crumbs, or other particles.
- Inspect the hinge area and the edges of both halves.
- Remove loose debris with a soft, lint-free cloth rather than scraping it with a fingernail or tool.
- Close the phone only after the display and hinge look clear.
Do not press hard on a mark to see whether it disappears. Pressure can turn a harmless speck into a crease, dent, or damaged pixel area. Keep keys, coins, tools, and other sharp objects away from the open display, and avoid placing the phone face-down on rough surfaces.
Cleaning without lifting the film
Google’s Pixel Fold cleaning instructions call for a soft lint-free cloth and warn users not to pick at the film’s edges. Wipe gently; do not insert a card, blade, or fingernail under a corner. If a substance will not come off with light wiping, stop and ask an authorized service provider rather than escalating the pressure.
These are Google’s instructions for its Pixel Fold devices, not a universal warranty rule for every foldable phone. Always give the exact model’s care guide priority.

Are foldable phones waterproof?
No. “Water-resistant” is the accurate term, and the protection belongs to a particular model under specified test conditions. The ratings in the current manufacturer documentation are examples, not a category-wide standard.

Google states that water resistance can diminish or be lost through normal wear and tear, repair, disassembly, or damage. Its Pixel guidance also says not to submerge the phone or take it into a sink, shower, sauna, bath, pool, or another body of water. Water damage is not covered by the Pixel warranty according to that guidance.
An IP code is measured for the device as tested, not for every future condition. A cracked frame, a distorted hinge, a replaced part, or accumulated wear can change the result. Dry the exterior if it gets splashed, keep ports facing downward while wiping, and do not charge a wet phone until it is completely dry. Do not use a hair dryer or insert objects into openings.

Can you remove the preinstalled screen protector?
Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Google tells Pixel Fold owners not to peel off the installed protector and not to apply a third-party protector over it. The film is part of the device’s designed screen assembly; lifting it can damage the display or leave an edge that catches during folding. If the film bubbles, lifts, scratches deeply, or starts separating, contact Google or an authorized repair provider instead of removing it at home.

Galaxy Z Fold models
Samsung describes the main-screen protector supplied with Galaxy Z Fold phones as specially designed to withstand repeated folding and unfolding. In the United States, Samsung provides an authorized replacement pathway for eligible devices through its service channels. Eligibility, price, locations, and promotions can change, and they depend on the exact model and region.
Do not substitute a generic film simply because its dimensions appear correct. Adhesive, thickness, flexibility, and edge clearance all matter when a panel bends thousands of times. A protector sold for one Galaxy Z Fold generation may not fit another generation, and a slab-phone protector is not an appropriate substitute.
Can a foldable screen be repaired?
Yes, repair is possible, but an inner flexible display is not a straightforward do-it-yourself part. Google recommends professional assistance for Pixel Fold repairs and warns that disassembly can compromise water resistance and create device or personal-safety risks.

Why an inner-screen repair is difficult
- The display is bonded into a thin, folding assembly rather than mounted like a conventional glass slab.
- Opening the phone can disturb seals, hinge alignment, cables, and the factory-applied film.
- Reassembly may require several single-use adhesives and tapes.
- A successful screen replacement does not automatically restore the original water-resistance condition.
iFixit’s Pixel Fold repair snapshot specifically notes substantial one-time adhesive and tape requirements for reassembly. That supports a model-specific warning about complexity; it is not a universal repairability score for every foldable.

An authorized center can identify whether the fault is the inner panel, outer screen, hinge, protector, or another component before quoting work. It can also use the correct replacement film and adhesives. Ask whether the estimate covers labor, parts, taxes, diagnostic fees, and post-repair testing. Samsung’s published repair prices are model-specific suggested prices, vary by region and authorized location, and exclude taxes and fees; verify the current listing for the exact device and screen before approving work.
Back up the phone before service, remove any account locks as instructed by the provider, and photograph its condition. If the device is swollen, hot, smoking, or physically punctured, stop using it and seek urgent professional help rather than attempting to open it.
Daily-use rules that reduce avoidable damage
- Open and close the phone with clean hands and without forcing the hinge past its normal stop.
- Keep sand, crumbs, metal filings, and pet hair away from the hinge and inner panel.
- Never close the phone with a card, cable, or object between the halves.
- Avoid pressing the center of the inner screen with a fingernail or stylus tip.
- Use the exact model’s case if you choose one; confirm that it does not interfere with hinge movement or trap debris.
- Treat a case as impact protection only. It does not make a phone waterproof or dustproof.
- Keep the installed protector in place unless the manufacturer or an authorized service center directs otherwise.
Case compatibility is model-dependent. A case for Galaxy Z Fold6 may not align correctly on Galaxy Z Fold7, and a Pixel Fold case will not necessarily fit Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Check the manufacturer’s model number, hinge coverage, and camera cutouts before buying.
What to do when something goes wrong
A bubble, lifted edge, or crease appears in the protector
Do not smooth it with a hard object or peel it back. Stop folding more than necessary, keep debris away from the exposed edge, and arrange an authorized protector evaluation. Continuing to pick at the film can turn a replaceable protector issue into display damage.

The inner screen shows a black spot, colored line, or dead area
Back up your data and arrange professional diagnosis. Avoid squeezing the affected area or repeatedly opening and closing the phone to test it. The cause could be panel damage, pressure, contamination, or a connection fault; only inspection can distinguish them.
The hinge feels gritty or will not close flat
Do not spray liquid, oil, or compressed cleaner into the hinge. Inspect for visible particles, wipe the exterior gently with a lint-free cloth, and seek service if the resistance remains. A gritty hinge can transfer force to the flexible panel every time the phone closes.
The phone gets wet
Disconnect it from power, wipe the exterior, and let it dry naturally in a ventilated place. Do not submerge it to rinse away contaminants and do not use heat. If moisture warnings persist or the phone behaves abnormally, contact the manufacturer or an authorized center.
How to compare foldables before buying
Durability cannot be ranked fairly from the available documents because they do not provide a standardized cross-brand longevity test. Compare the practical support details instead:

For Galaxy Z Fold6 and Fold7, the stated seven-generation OS and seven-year security commitments are useful planning information. For Pixel Fold devices, follow the support term published for the specific model and market. Neither type of software policy predicts the physical display’s lifespan.

- Record the exact model and region, then save its current safety and repair pages.
- Inspect the protector and hinge once a week for lifting edges, grit, or unusual resistance.
- Clean only with a soft lint-free cloth; never pick at the film.
- Keep the phone away from pools, showers, baths, saunas, and deliberate submersion, even when it carries an IP rating.
- Use a compatible case if you need impact protection, checking that it does not obstruct folding.

The safest expectation is not that every foldable fails quickly, nor that every one lasts a fixed number of years.
