A flash loan provides uncollateralized liquidity only for one atomic blockchain transaction: the borrowed assets and required fee must be repaid before that transaction completes. A traditional crypto loan, in this comparison, means an ongoing collateralized borrowing position that can remain open across transactions but accrues interest and can be liquidated. The right choice depends mainly on whether your entire operation can finish atomically or you need to hold the borrowed assets longer.
How flash loans and traditional crypto loans differ
Here, “traditional crypto loan” means an ongoing, collateral-backed crypto loan—not a bank loan, fiat loan, or every kind of centralized exchange borrowing. Aave’s documentation is used below as a concrete example of on-chain lending mechanics; available assets, parameters, and interfaces vary by protocol and network.
| Feature | Flash loan | Ongoing collateralized crypto loan |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral | No collateral is required for the flash-loan mechanism. | You supply collateral to secure the outstanding debt. |
| Duration | One transaction; repayment must be completed within that transaction. | Can remain open across transactions, subject to the protocol’s rules and adequate collateral. |
| Repayment | Borrowed amount plus the required fee must be returned atomically. | Debt remains outstanding until repaid; borrowed balances accrue interest. |
| Main cost components | Protocol fee, if applicable, and transaction gas. | Interest, which can vary with reserve utilization, plus possible gas and swap or other transaction costs. |
| Main exposure | Whether the full transaction sequence executes and repays, alongside contract, network, oracle, and transaction-cost risks. | Collateral-price changes, accruing interest, and liquidation risk, alongside protocol and network risks. |
| Typical fit | A smart-contract operation whose borrowing, actions, and repayment all fit in one transaction. | Borrowing that must continue beyond a single transaction, provided you can supply and monitor sufficient collateral. |
Aave defines a flash loan as an uncollateralized loan that must be borrowed and repaid within one transaction block in its glossary. Its Pool documentation describes accessing liquidity within one transaction on the condition that the amount plus a fee is returned.
What a flash loan does—and what it does not do
How the transaction works
A smart contract requests assets, carries out the specified actions, and attempts to return the borrowed amount plus the required fee in the same transaction. If repayment cannot be completed, Aave’s no-debt flash-loan operation reverts rather than leaving an ordinary debt position open. A revert means the operation does not complete as intended; it does not make the transaction cost-free.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This atomic design is why the loan does not require the borrower to post collateral for the flash-loan operation. It is also a strict execution constraint: the whole sequence must work within one transaction, including any protocol interactions needed to generate repayment.
When it can be useful
Flash loans can supply temporary liquidity for a smart-contract strategy that can complete and repay atomically—for example, composing liquidity actions or executing a multi-step transaction. They are not a way to borrow tokens for spending now and repay later, and they do not guarantee that an arbitrage or other strategy will be profitable.

Using one generally requires a contract or another transaction route capable of orchestrating the actions and repayment. The Bank of Canada’s March 2025 paper describes the same atomic structure. It also discusses historical Aave V2 cases involving rollover into a standard collateralized loan; that version-specific history should not be treated as a general feature of current flash loans.
How an ongoing collateralized loan works
With an ongoing loan, you supply collateral and borrow against it. Aave represents borrowed balances with debt tokens that accrue interest; its V3 overview explains that rates respond to reserve utilization and can rise more quickly beyond the model’s optimal-utilization point. The applicable rate and borrowing parameters depend on the reserve and protocol configuration, so a rate observed for one asset or deployment does not establish the rate for another.

The borrower can keep the position open across transactions, but the value and adequacy of the collateral matter throughout its life. Aave’s borrowing guide explains collateral and position monitoring. Supported assets and parameters differ by reserve and can change; pool liquidity also matters, since suppliers can withdraw only when sufficient unborrowed liquidity is available.
Risks: failed execution versus liquidation
Flash-loan risks
- Atomic execution failure: If the transaction cannot complete the required actions and repay the amount plus fee, it reverts. The strategy fails, and a submitted transaction may still incur gas costs.
- Contract and oracle risk: The strategy depends on the smart contracts and any price or other data it uses. A bug, incorrect valuation, or compromised oracle can undermine the operation.
- Network and route risk: Congestion, censorship, or security vulnerabilities can affect whether the transaction executes as intended. These risks are among those identified in Aave’s risk documentation.
Collateralized-loan risks
- Liquidation: Aave tracks a position’s health factor. Its glossary explains that a health factor below 1 makes a position eligible for liquidation; this is a protocol-specific threshold, not a guarantee that every protocol uses identical rules.
- Falling collateral value: A decline can make a previously adequate position unsafe. Aave warns that collateral can fall faster than liquidation can occur, which can contribute to bad debt.
- Interest and liquidity changes: Interest accrues while debt remains open, and utilization-sensitive borrowing rates may change. Available liquidity and reserve parameters can also affect what can be borrowed or withdrawn.
- Operational and protocol risks: Oracle failures or compromise, network problems, bridge vulnerabilities, gas costs, and swap fees can affect a position or the ability to manage it. Aave outlines these risks in its risk documentation and app disclosures.
Neither design removes protocol-solvency or access risk. A flash loan avoids carrying an open borrowing position after a successful atomic transaction, but its execution still depends on functioning contracts, data, and network access.

How to compare costs without relying on stale rates
There is no meaningful universal comparison between a flash-loan fee and a collateralized-loan APR. The first is a transaction-level charge, while ongoing borrowing accrues interest for as long as debt remains open. Both can also involve gas; a strategy may add swap or other transaction fees.
Costs depend on the protocol, network, asset, reserve utilization, transaction route, and current parameters. Aave’s documentation establishes fee-bearing flash-loan repayment and utilization-sensitive borrowing rates, but does not establish one current rate that applies across assets and deployments. Before acting, check the relevant protocol interface or contract parameters for the specific network and assets, and account for transaction costs. A historical fee figure or an APR from a different reserve is not a reliable substitute.

Which type of loan fits your need?
- Consider a flash loan only if the borrowing, intended actions, and repayment can all be composed into one transaction, and you understand the contract and execution risks.
- Consider an ongoing collateralized loan if you need to retain borrowed assets beyond one transaction and can provide collateral, pay variable interest, and monitor the position.
- Neither is a simple cash loan: a flash loan cannot be held for ordinary spending, while an open crypto loan can expose pledged collateral to liquidation.
For any on-chain loan, verify support and liquidity for the chosen asset on the chosen network, review the live parameters, and understand how the position or transaction behaves if prices, network conditions, or protocol availability change. These details are deployment-specific and can change over time.
