Saturday includes a free morning survivorship expo at the Rhode Island Convention Center and an outdoor festival at 195 District Park; Sunday brings the Gloria Gemma 5K. The organizer’s pages disagree about the Saturday torch ceremony’s start time, so confirm it with the Foundation before heading out.
What is Flames of Hope in Providence?
Flames of Hope is the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s annual weekend recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month and welcoming people impacted by cancer. The program combines health education, celebration, remembrance and fundraising. The Foundation describes the Illuminations of Life ceremony as a tribute to survivors and a remembrance of those lost, told through music and choreographed ballet. The Foundation’s event overview and Passport to Survivorship page provide its descriptions and schedule.

When is the Flames of Hope torch procession?
The start time is not consistent across the Foundation’s pages: the main event page lists the Illuminations of Life ceremony and procession at 6:30 p.m., while the torch registration page shows 6:00 p.m. Confirm the current time directly with Gloria Gemma rather than relying on either listing alone.

Who can join the procession?
The organizer says procession participation is limited to torchbearers and their assigned escorts. Spectators should follow the Foundation’s current instructions and should not assume they can join the procession.
What does it take to be a torchbearer?
The registration page sets a $650 minimum fundraising goal; the first 150 people who reach that goal will be torchbearers. The Foundation describes the flame as representing people in treatment, survivors and thrivers, people living with metastatic disease, and loved ones who have died.

Is Flames of Hope free?
The general outdoor festival is described as free to attend. Food and drinks are available for purchase, and the Saturday evening Taste of Hope and Pink Party are separately ticketed. The Expo is also described as free, though the Foundation says online registration is closed and tickets will be available at the Convention Center on Saturday. Confirm entry and ticket details with the organizer, particularly for ticketed events.
How should visitors plan the weekend?
- Choose the right venue and time: The morning Expo is at the Rhode Island Convention Center; the outdoor festival and evening activities are at 195 District Park. Allow time to travel between them.
- Check ceremony details: Because the official pages differ on the torch ceremony time, verify the latest schedule with Gloria Gemma before setting an arrival time.
- Verify 5K logistics: The reviewed schedule identifies Sunday morning in Providence but does not establish the route or start point. Check the Foundation’s current event information for those details.
- Plan for walking: Comfortable walking shoes are sensible for anyone attending the outdoor program or the Sunday 5K; this is practical advice, not a stated event requirement.
- Arrange lodging if needed: The Foundation has a travel page for Flames of Hope visitors.
What is known about the event’s history?
The State Ballet of Rhode Island says it has participated in Illuminations of Life since 2009. Its event page also describes more than 100,000 visitors annually, but does not specify the year for that figure; it should not be treated as a verified attendance estimate for 2026. The ballet’s event page includes its 2023 participation details.
