Keep your FLAC files as the master copies: MP3 is lossy, so converting FLAC to MP3 discards information and converting the MP3 back to FLAC cannot restore it.
What a FLAC-to-MP3 converter does
FLAC stores audio losslessly. MP3 uses lossy compression to produce smaller files and broad playback compatibility. A converter decodes the FLAC stream and encodes a new MP3 stream; it does not move the original audio into a different container without change. The resulting MP3 can be convenient for a portable MP3 player, older car stereo, phone or application that does not accept FLAC, while the FLAC remains the archival or highest-fidelity copy.

Because the conversion is one-way in terms of discarded detail, create MP3 copies from the original FLAC files rather than repeatedly converting an already compressed MP3. A higher MP3 bitrate can increase the file size and may preserve more of the source during encoding, but no bitrate makes an MP3 lossless.

Menu names can change, so use the manual that accompanies your current build. |
| MediaHuman Audio Converter | Simple cross-platform batch conversion | Free application for macOS, Windows and Linux; supports MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV. Its page lists version 2.3.8, updated August 26, 2026. | Converts multiple files simultaneously, retains folder structure, creates filenames from ID3 tags, supports CUE splitting and can retrieve cover art through Internet services when an ID3-tagged file lacks embedded artwork. Review retrieved artwork before replacing any originals. |
Prepare the files before converting
- Protect the source. Keep the FLAC collection in its archival folder and make a separate destination folder for MP3 files. Do not use an output setting that overwrites the FLAC files.
- Check the source tags. Open one representative file and confirm title, artist, album, track number, disc number, year and genre are present. A converter can copy metadata that exists; it cannot reliably invent missing information.
- Decide where the MP3 will play. Check the destination player or application for supported MP3 profiles, filename rules, maximum folder depth and artwork requirements. Older hardware can be less tolerant of unusual tags or very long filenames.
- Choose a small test set. Include a short track, a long track, a multi-disc album and a file with embedded artwork if your collection contains them. Convert this sample before queuing the entire library.
Converting with a graphical application
fre:ac
The fre:ac project describes the application as a way to rip CDs to MP3 or M4A and to convert files that do not play in other audio software. It supports FLAC input and MP3 output along with several other common formats.
#1 Best Overall
- NEW: Now with integrated video search
- NEW: Playlist Download with one click - NEW: Customize the audio quality
- NEW: Direct download as MP3
- NEW: Support for multiple audio tracks
- High-speed downloads in up to 4K and 8K quality
- Install the current build from the fre:ac project site.
- Add one FLAC file or a folder to the conversion queue using the application’s import or drag-and-drop control.
- Select MP3 as the output format and open the encoder settings.
- Choose a bitrate or quality mode supported by the intended device. Do not assume that one setting is universally best; balance compatibility, file size and encoded fidelity.
- Set a separate output directory. If the interface offers options for preserving tags or artwork, enable them.
- Convert the sample and inspect the resulting tags, duration, artwork and playback on the target device.
- After the sample is correct, add the rest of the collection and run the queue.
Interface labels and encoder options can change between releases. If a setting described in an older tutorial is absent, consult the manual for the version installed rather than selecting an unrelated option.
MediaHuman Audio Converter
MediaHuman’s official page documents simultaneous multi-file conversion, folder-structure retention and ID3-based filename generation on macOS, Windows and Linux. It also lists FLAC and MP3 support, CUE splitting and cover-art retrieval when an ID3-tagged file has no embedded artwork.
- Install the current version for your operating system. The project page lists version 2.3.8 with an August 26, 2026 update date.
- Drag a representative FLAC file or folder into the conversion window.
- Set the output format to MP3 and select the destination folder. Enable the option that preserves the source folder structure if you want the MP3 library to mirror the FLAC hierarchy.
- Choose a bitrate or quality setting that the destination player supports. Treat any displayed value as a conversion choice, not a guarantee of lossless quality.
- Turn on metadata transfer and review filename rules based on ID3 tags. If the source lacks embedded artwork, the application may retrieve an image through an Internet service; verify the album and edition before accepting it.
- Convert the sample, then check title, artist, album, track number, artwork, duration and playback.
- Run the remaining files only after the sample passes. Keep the MP3 output separate from the FLAC archive.
Using FFmpeg for exact and repeatable conversion
FFmpeg’s documentation describes it as a universal media converter and documents stream re-encoding, codec selection, output parameters, metadata mapping and explicit metadata fields. It is the better choice when you need a command that can be repeated for hundreds of files or integrated into a backup and media workflow.

The following is an example pattern, not a claim that every local build uses the same encoder name. Check the encoders and options available in your installed FFmpeg package before running it:

- Convert from multiple file formats at one time
ffmpeg -i 'input.flac' -map 0:a:0 -map_metadata 0 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k 'output.mp3'
-i 'input.flac'supplies the FLAC source.-map 0:a:0selects the first audio stream, avoiding accidental selection of an attached stream when a file contains more than one stream.-map_metadata 0copies global metadata from the input when the tags are readable by FFmpeg.-c:a libmp3lamerequests the MP3 encoder namedlibmp3lamein many builds. Encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was packaged.-b:a 192kis an illustrative bitrate setting, not a universal recommendation. Replace it with the setting your player and quality target require.
If you need to write or correct a field, FFmpeg also supports explicit metadata options. For example, a command can add a title or language value with the metadata syntax documented on the FFmpeg site. Verify the tag result with a media player or tag editor after conversion.
A repeatable folder conversion
On a POSIX-compatible shell, this example writes MP3 files to a separate directory while preserving each source basename:
mkdir -p mp3
for f in *.flac; do
ffmpeg -i "$f" -map 0:a:0 -map_metadata 0 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k "mp3/${f%.flac}.mp3"
done
Adapt quoting and loop syntax for your shell. Test the command with one file first, confirm the encoder name with your installed build, and use a destination outside the FLAC folder. For nested artist and album directories, create a script that mirrors the directory tree and preserves the relative path; do not assume a flat output folder is suitable for a large library.

- Compatibility: the destination device or application must accept the MP3 settings you choose.
- File size: lower data rates produce smaller files, useful when storage or mobile transfer is limited.
- Encoded fidelity: a higher setting generally gives the encoder more data, but the output remains lossy and larger.
Start with the destination’s documented limits, then choose a quality or bitrate mode and compare a short sample on the actual device. Do not judge the entire library from a conversion that has not been tested on the intended player. If maximum fidelity matters, listen to the FLAC archive and create MP3 copies only for devices or software that require them.
Preserving tags, filenames and artwork
Metadata
Metadata transfer is separate from audio encoding. A converter can preserve title, artist, album and track information when those fields are present and the output format supports them. FFmpeg exposes -map_metadata and explicit metadata fields; graphical applications usually provide a checkbox or encoder setting for tag transfer. After conversion, open several files and verify that the tags are attached to the MP3 rather than merely reflected in a playlist.
Folder structure and filenames
MediaHuman documents folder-structure retention and filenames generated from ID3 tags. These options are useful when an MP3 copy must mirror an existing artist/album hierarchy. Before a large batch, test characters such as apostrophes, accented names and long album titles on the target operating system. A player that sorts by tags may ignore filenames, while a basic device may rely on the folder and filename alone.
Cover art
Embedded artwork can be lost if the output settings do not copy it. MediaHuman says it can retrieve cover art through Internet services when an ID3-tagged file lacks embedded artwork. That convenience can produce an incorrect edition or image, so inspect the album, front-cover image and file association before replacing originals. Keep the FLAC files unchanged until the MP3 set has been checked.

Batch conversion without damaging the library
- Make a dated backup or otherwise verify that the FLAC archive is recoverable.
- Choose a dedicated MP3 output root rather than writing beside the source files.
- Convert one representative album and inspect all tags, artwork, track order and playback.
- Run the batch with the same output settings and a predictable naming rule.
- Compare file counts and spot-check albums from the beginning, middle and end of the queue.
- Only then copy the MP3 folder to a portable player, phone or other destination.
For very large libraries, retain a conversion log or the command history so that a failed subset can be rerun without re-encoding files that already passed inspection.

The MP3 has no tags or the wrong album information
Confirm that the FLAC actually contains the expected tags, enable metadata transfer in the graphical converter, or use FFmpeg’s metadata mapping. If the source tags are incomplete, correct them at the source before repeating the conversion.
The output has no cover image
Check whether the FLAC contains embedded artwork and whether the selected MP3 encoder writes it. In MediaHuman, review the artwork-retrieval result rather than assuming an online match is correct.

The player refuses the files
Verify that the device supports MP3, then try a setting within its documented bitrate and tag limits. Shorten unusually long filenames, simplify folder depth and test a single file before reconverting the whole collection.
The conversion overwrote or mixed with the FLAC archive
Stop the batch, restore the source from backup if necessary and select a separate destination directory. A clean separation between lossless masters and delivery copies prevents later recovery problems.
When CD ripping is part of the job
Existing FLAC files do not require a CD drive. If you still need to extract audio from physical discs, fre:ac explicitly supports CD ripping to MP3 or M4A as well as conversion among common audio formats. An external USB CD/DVD drive is relevant only when the computer lacks a working optical drive; it is not required for FLAC-to-MP3 conversion.
Quick Recap
A final quality-control checklist
- FLAC originals remain untouched in their archival location.
- The MP3 output folder is separate and clearly named.
- The destination device accepts the selected MP3 settings.
- Title, artist, album, track number and duration are correct.
- Artwork is present and belongs to the correct release.
- Folder structure and filenames work on the target player.
- A representative sample plays correctly before the full batch runs.
