Neither plan is universally better. A fixed-rate tariff can make the contracted unit price predictable for a stated period, while a variable-rate tariff leaves you exposed to changes allowed by its formula and notice rules. An oil-price jump does not automatically make a variable plan expensive—or a fixed plan cheap—because retail electricity and gas prices also reflect local fuels, wholesale-market design, network costs, taxes, supplier costs and contract terms.
The sound choice is the offer that fits your location, expected annual use, tolerance for bill changes and ability to switch or reduce consumption. Compare the complete annual bill under the same usage assumptions, then inspect exactly what is fixed, what can change, how much notice you receive and what happens if you leave early.

The quick decision
Choose a fixed plan when predictable payments are worth paying for protection from increases during the contract period, provided the supplier’s terms genuinely fix the parts of the bill that matter to you. Choose a variable plan when you value flexibility, can tolerate changing bills and the contract gives you a clear, limited and understandable method for price changes.
Do not choose solely because crude oil is rising or falling. Oil can affect energy markets indirectly, but there is no universal one-to-one relationship between an oil quotation and a household electricity or natural-gas tariff. Before signing, calculate your expected annual cost, identify every changeable charge, check exit and renewal terms, and verify the protections in your country.

Why an oil-price swing is an imperfect guide
Natural gas prices have several drivers
The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes natural-gas prices as primarily a function of supply and demand. Storage levels, imports, weather, economic activity, international demand and petroleum prices can all influence that balance. Large users may switch among natural gas, coal and petroleum when relative prices change, altering gas demand. Those channels make oil relevant in some circumstances, but they do not create a fixed formula for every household bill. The relationship depends on the market, time period and local supply system.
Electricity is priced by the marginal generator in many EU markets
In European Union wholesale electricity markets, the marginal generator needed to meet demand sets the market price. The European Commission explains that gas can be the price-setting source when renewable and nuclear generation do not cover demand; at other times, another generator sets the price. A fuel shock can therefore raise electricity prices when gas is marginal, but the size and duration of the effect depend on dispatch, demand, available supply and the market’s design.
Geography can matter more than the oil headline
U.S. Energy Information Administration preliminary 2025 data illustrate the range. The U.S. residential annual average was 17.30 cents per kilowatt-hour. Hawaii’s average across customer types was 35.72 cents per kilowatt-hour, a level the agency attributes mainly to imported petroleum-fired generation. These are historical 2025 averages available in February 2026, not forecasts, tariff offers or estimates for another country. A household in a petroleum-dependent power system can have a different exposure from one served mostly by gas, hydro, nuclear or renewables.
Wholesale energy is only part of a retail bill
The European Commission reports that the electricity component averaged nearly 49% of EU household and business electricity bills in 2024. The rest consisted of other bill components. Even if a fuel movement changed the electricity component by a given percentage, the total bill would not necessarily change by that same percentage. Standing charges, networks, policy costs, taxes, supplier operating costs and other items can move differently or remain unchanged.
What “fixed” and “variable” actually mean
The labels describe a pricing mechanism, not a promise about your total bill. Read the contract’s definition before comparing offers.
| Plan label | What it normally means | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-rate | A stated unit price is committed for a specified period, within the scope written in the contract. | Are standing charges, taxes, network items and other fees also fixed? Can any component change, and under what event? |
| Variable-rate | The supplier may change prices under stated timing, notice and contractual conditions. | What triggers a change, how often can it occur, what notice is required, and is there a cap or other safeguard? |
| Indexed | The price is linked to a named reference or formula rather than set independently by the supplier. | Which index and publication date are used? Is there a spread, floor, ceiling or lag? |
| Dynamic or time-linked | The price can vary with market or time intervals specified by the agreement. | How frequently is it updated, where is the price displayed, and can your household shift usage? |
| Mixed | Different components or periods use different pricing methods. | Which part is fixed, which part varies, and how do the pieces interact on a bill? |
A contract lasting 12 or 24 months is not automatically a fixed-rate contract. It may fix only the energy unit rate while allowing a standing charge or regulated component to change. Conversely, a variable offer can include a cap, a formula or a notice period that limits how quickly your cost changes. The written terms control.

How to compare two offers on equal terms
1. Establish a realistic annual-use figure
Use your most recent 12 months of actual meter readings if available. If you have moved, changed heating equipment or altered occupancy, adjust the estimate and record the assumption. Compare both offers with the same electricity and gas consumption; a supplier’s default estimate can make a plan appear cheaper simply because it assumes less use.

2. Calculate the complete annual cost
For each offer, calculate electricity consumption multiplied by the electricity unit rate and gas consumption multiplied by the gas unit rate. Add standing charges for every day of the comparison period, then add taxes, network charges, mandatory fees and any recurring service charge. Apply discounts only if you meet their conditions and identify whether they are temporary. Include one-time credits separately so they do not disguise the recurring cost.
A useful worksheet is:
annual cost = (electricity kWh × electricity unit rate) + (gas kWh × gas unit rate) + standing charges + taxes + network charges + recurring fees − qualifying discounts
Keep the unit conventions consistent. A price per kilowatt-hour and a daily standing charge cannot be compared directly without converting them to the same annual period.
3. Mark every component as fixed, changeable or conditional
Highlight each line in the contract. “Fixed” should be tied to a precise component and period. For every changeable line, write the trigger, formula, maximum or minimum if any, effective date and notice period. If the document uses terms such as “market conditions” without explaining how a new price is calculated, ask the supplier for the contractual formula in writing before enrolling.
4. Test more than one price path
Compare the offers under at least three qualitative cases: prices rise, prices fall and prices move sharply in both directions. For a fixed offer, the contracted rate remains insulated from the covered market movement, but you may pay more than a later variable rate. For a variable offer, the bill may fall or rise according to the contract, and the timing of a retail change may not match the day an oil or wholesale quotation moves. Record which outcome matters most to your budget rather than trying to predict the commodity market.

Record the contract start and end dates, automatic-renewal process, cancellation window, exit fee and any requirement to repay a conditional discount. A low unit rate can be poor value if you expect to move home, change supplier or install equipment before the term ends. Ask how a move-out is handled and whether the final bill uses a meter reading or an estimate.

6. Verify protections and supplier arrangements
Identify the regulator, complaint route and any price cap, credit-balance protection or supplier-of-last-resort arrangement in your jurisdiction. Read what happens to your account if the supplier leaves the market. Protection is country-specific; do not import a rule from another market into your own contract.
7. Compare the same service level
Check whether both offers cover the same meter type, payment method, billing frequency and customer-service features. A direct-debit discount, paper-billing fee or smart-meter requirement can change the result. Compare annual totals after applying the conditions you can actually meet.
What happens under different oil-price scenarios?
If crude oil rises quickly
Some power systems or industrial users may face higher petroleum costs, and oil-linked or fuel-substitution effects can influence gas or electricity markets. A variable household tariff may eventually reflect part of that movement if its contract permits it. A fixed tariff can shield the covered unit rate until the term ends. The shield is limited: charges outside the fixed scope can still change, and a supplier may fail to renew the same rate later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf crude oil falls
A variable tariff may benefit if the relevant local wholesale costs fall and the supplier passes them through. The pass-through may be delayed, partial or absent when other costs rise. A household locked into a fixed rate may not receive the lower market price during the term and could face an exit fee if it tries to switch.
If prices are volatile rather than steadily rising
Volatility increases the value of knowing your budget limit. A fixed plan exchanges some upside from falling prices for less exposure to rises in the covered components. A variable plan preserves the possibility of lower bills but requires enough financial room to absorb increases and enough attention to react to notices.
If oil is not the local marginal fuel
The oil headline may have little immediate effect on your tariff when your electricity is set by another source or your gas contract uses a different index. Weather, storage, imports, outages, demand and network constraints can dominate. Base your decision on the contract’s reference and change mechanism, not on a general commodity-news story.

Regulatory examples: why location changes the answer
Great Britain
Ofgem states that its price cap applies to standard variable tariffs and not to fixed tariffs. The cap is reset every three months. Ofgem’s explanation includes wholesale, network, policy, supplier-operating and other cost allowances. The cap limits covered rates under its rules; it does not mean every household pays the same bill, because usage and standing charges still matter. If you live outside Great Britain, find your own regulator’s equivalent protections rather than assuming this cap applies.

European Union consumer guidance
The European Commission advises consumers to determine whether an offer is fixed, variable, dynamic, indexed or mixed; ask when and why it can change and what notice applies; compare estimated annual consumption and all charges; and check duration, renewal, cancellation, exit fees and discounts. For dynamic or flexible prices, the contract summary should explain the formula, index, change frequency and illustrative bills. Its concise advice is: Use your national independent comparison tool where available before signing a new energy contract.
United States and other markets
U.S. retail arrangements vary by state and utility structure, and many other countries use entirely different rules. The EIA figures above describe national and Hawaii averages, not a fixed-versus-variable product comparison. Confirm whether your market is regulated, competitive, utility-served or subject to a local default tariff before evaluating an offer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Supplier resilience is part of the risk calculation
During the 2021–2022 energy-price crisis, some suppliers failed and customers faced unexpected costs or had to choose less favorable contracts. The European Commission also notes that fixed-price offers require supplier risk management: the supplier has promised a customer price even if its market costs rise. This does not predict that a particular supplier will fail, but it explains why a low fixed quote deserves scrutiny of the supplier’s terms, financial arrangements and customer protections.
Check whether your jurisdiction protects credit balances, guarantees continuity of supply or transfers customers to a designated provider. These safeguards differ by country and may not protect every fee or promotional benefit.
Which households tend to prefer each structure?
Budget-sensitive household with little room for surprises
A fixed rate may be preferable if the premium over a comparable variable offer is affordable and the contract fixes the charges that dominate your bill. Confirm the term and exit cost so the certainty is not undermined by an early move.
Best Value
Household able to absorb changes and willing to monitor notices
A variable rate can suit you if you can budget for increases, understand the change formula and are prepared to switch when the economics change. Set a reminder for every notice and renewal date.
Household with flexible electricity use
A dynamic or time-linked plan may reward shifting appliances to cheaper intervals, but only if the contract displays prices clearly and your household can change its routine. Compare the potential operational burden with the stated charges; do not assume flexibility automatically produces savings.
Short-term occupant or likely mover
Prioritize cancellation rules, exit fees and portability over a headline unit rate. A longer fixed term can be unsuitable if leaving early is expensive.

Large usage magnifies every unit-rate difference. Use measured annual consumption, separate electricity and gas calculations, and test how each offer behaves if rates change. Standing charges still matter, but the unit rate may dominate the total for high use.
A practical comparison worksheet
| Item to record | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity annual use (kWh) | Use the same measured or estimated figure | Use the same measured or estimated figure |
| Gas annual use (kWh), if applicable | Use the same figure | Use the same figure |
| Electricity unit rate and scope | Write rate, period and fixed/changeable status | Write rate, period and fixed/changeable status |
| Gas unit rate and scope | Write rate, period and fixed/changeable status | Write rate, period and fixed/changeable status |
| Standing charges | Daily or periodic amount multiplied by the comparison period | Daily or periodic amount multiplied by the comparison period |
| Taxes, network charges and fees | List each applicable item | List each applicable item |
| Discount conditions | Record eligibility and end date | Record eligibility and end date |
| Change formula, frequency and notice | Copy the contractual wording in plain language | Copy the contractual wording in plain language |
| Term, renewal and exit fee | Record dates and amounts | Record dates and amounts |
If a supplier refuses to explain a charge or formula, treat that uncertainty as a decision risk rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using oil as a universal forecast. Check the local fuel mix and the tariff’s actual index or formula.
- Comparing unit rates alone. Add standing charges, taxes, network costs, fees and the full effect of discounts.
- Assuming a contract term fixes the whole bill. Identify each component covered by the commitment.
- Ignoring notice timing. A variable price can change only on the schedule written in the agreement; record when notice must arrive.
- Confusing a price cap with a guaranteed bill. A cap can limit covered rates while your consumption still determines the bill.
- Projecting a temporary discount through the whole term. Mark the date it ends and recalculate the recurring cost.
- Overlooking exit fees. Include the fee when testing whether switching later would actually save money.
- Assuming lower wholesale prices appear immediately. Retail pass-through can be delayed, partial or governed by a different review date.
- Choosing a dynamic plan without operational capacity. Confirm that your household can monitor and shift use before valuing time-based pricing.
- Relying on another country’s protection. Verify the regulator and consumer safeguards where the meter is located.
Bottom line for an oil-sensitive decision
Oil volatility is a reason to read the contract carefully, not a reason by itself to select fixed or variable. A fixed plan buys a defined degree of certainty for a defined period and scope. A variable plan keeps the possibility of benefiting from lower prices but transfers more market and notice risk to you. Calculate both annual totals with identical usage, identify every changeable charge, test your ability to withstand increases and verify local protections. The better plan is the one whose remaining risks you can understand and afford.
