Choose easy access for money you may need soon; choose a fixed-rate bond only for cash you can leave untouched until its stated maturity. An easy-access account normally has a variable rate, so your return can change after a Bank of England Bank Rate move. A fixed-rate account guarantees the agreed rate for its term, but withdrawing early can be impossible or can cost most of the interest. A split between the two can reduce the risk of making the wrong call on rates.
The decision in one minute
- Emergency fund or uncertain spending date: keep it in easy access. The ability to withdraw is worth more than a small rate difference.
- Known date and no need for the cash before then: a fixed-rate bond can protect the return if rates fall.
- You expect rates to rise or want to switch quickly: easy access keeps that option open.
- You cannot decide: split the money into an easy-access reserve and one or more fixed terms instead of fixing everything at once.
There is no permanently “best” account. Rates, bonuses, withdrawal rules, eligibility and maturity options change, so check current terms immediately before applying.

How the two account types differ
| Feature | Easy-access savings | Fixed-rate savings bond |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Variable; the provider can change it, commonly in response to market conditions and Bank Rate. | Fixed for the stated term; the provider cannot alter the agreed rate during that term. |
| Typical term | No fixed maturity while the account remains available. | Terms commonly run from six months to five years. |
| Withdrawals | Usually available on demand, although an account may set a notice period, withdrawal limit or loss of a bonus. | Access is restricted until maturity or subject to the bond’s early-withdrawal rules. A penalty can remove a large amount of interest. |
| Adding money | Often possible, subject to the account’s balance and bonus conditions. | Some bonds accept deposits only at opening; others allow additions for a limited funding window. The individual terms decide. |
| Tax treatment | Interest outside an ISA counts towards your Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) and taxable income rules. | Interest is taxable on the same basis; payment at maturity does not automatically make it tax-free. |
| Deposit protection | Eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000 per person per authorised firm. | The same FSCS limit applies. Different brands using one banking licence share the limit. |
| Minimum deposit | Set by the provider and product. | Set by the provider and product; a higher minimum can limit how much you can spread across institutions. |
| What happens at maturity | There is no maturity date; the account continues under its variable-rate terms unless you close it. | The provider normally returns the money, moves it to a new rate or offers a reinvestment choice. The exact process and notice window are in the maturity notice and terms. |
Compare the whole contract, not just the headline AER (annual equivalent rate). A high AER is of little use if a withdrawal penalty prevents you paying an unexpected bill or if a short-lived bonus disappears after a few months.

What a Bank Rate change does to your savings
If the Bank of England cuts rates
Easy-access rates are variable, so a provider may reduce the rate you earn. The cut may not happen on the same day as the Bank Rate decision, and providers do not all move by the same amount. Your account’s notice, bonus and change-of-rate clauses govern what you receive.

A fixed bond keeps the rate stated in your contract until maturity. If the bond was opened before the cut, the agreed return is protected. This protection is the main reason to accept restricted access.
If the Bank of England raises rates
An easy-access saver can benefit sooner when its provider passes on a rise, and you retain the ability to move to a better-paying account. A fixed saver remains on its old rate until maturity, so a newly available bond or easy-access account may pay more.
The direction of rates is not guaranteed. The Bank of England explains that fixed-rate savings pricing is linked to market expectations; its quoted deposit-rate series are weighted monthly averages, and fixed-rate savings bonds use the two-year overnight indexed swap (OIS) rate as a reference. Those indicators describe pricing conditions, not a promise about the next Bank Rate decision. Observations in its April 2026 report were provisional to 22 April 2026, so they are context rather than an October 2026 quote.
Why a fixed rate can be lower or higher than today’s easy-access rate
A bond rate reflects what the market expects rates to do over the whole term, plus the provider’s funding and competitive decisions. A high current easy-access rate may include a temporary bonus, while a fixed rate may be set below it because markets expect future cuts. Conversely, a fixed rate can look attractive when markets expect rates to fall sharply. Treat the comparison as a choice between certainty and flexibility, not a forecast you can know in advance.
When easy access is the safer choice
Emergency cash
Keep the amount needed for repairs, a job loss, medical costs or other surprises instantly available. A fixed bond that charges an early-withdrawal penalty can turn an emergency fund into an expensive loan from yourself.
An uncertain spending date
Use easy access when you may need a house deposit, tax bill, tuition payment or major purchase before a bond’s maturity. If the date is uncertain, the option to withdraw has a measurable value even if the variable rate is slightly lower.

You can leave the money untouched
Only fix money that is genuinely surplus for the entire term. Terms commonly range from six months to five years; match the term to a date you can identify, not to a hope that you will not need the cash.
You value a known maturity amount
A fixed rate lets you calculate the gross interest and maturity value at the outset. That certainty can be useful for a planned payment or for budgeting when a fall in variable rates would disrupt your plan.
You are comfortable missing future rises
By fixing, you give up the chance to move that money to a higher rate before maturity. Accept the trade only when certainty matters more than that option.
Tax rules for savings in the 2026/27 tax year
Personal Savings Allowance
MoneyHelper lists a £1,000 Personal Savings Allowance for basic-rate taxpayers and £500 for higher-rate taxpayers in 2026/27. Eligible low-income savers may also have a £5,000 starting-rate band. Interest above the allowances can create tax to pay; your overall income and tax position determine the result.

Cash ISAs
The 2026/27 Cash ISA allowance is £20,000. Interest in a Cash ISA is tax-free, so an ISA can be valuable when your taxable savings interest would exceed your PSA or when you want certainty about future tax treatment.
If you move an existing ISA, ask the new provider to perform the transfer. Withdrawing the money yourself and redepositing it can lose the tax-free status and may use up part of the annual allowance.
Compare after-tax returns
For non-ISA savings, compare the interest you can keep rather than AER alone. A simple illustration: £10,000 at a 4% AER would produce about £400 gross over a year before tax and any account-specific compounding. Whether that £400 is taxable depends on your PSA, other savings interest and income. This is an example for understanding the calculation, not a current market quote.
FSCS protection: check the licence, not the brand name
Eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per person per authorised firm, or £240,000 for a joint account. Several trading names or brands can operate under one banking licence, in which case their balances count together towards the same limit.
- Identify the legal banking entity and its authorisation, not just the name on the app or website.
- Add every eligible deposit you hold with that authorised firm, including accounts marketed under other brands.
- Keep the combined total within £120,000 per person unless a documented temporary-high-balance exception applies.
- If you need more protection, spread deposits across separately authorised firms and retain evidence of the licences.
The limit applies to eligible deposits, not every investment product. Read the provider’s protection statement if the account is supplied through a group or platform.
A practical process for choosing an account
- Ring-fence essential cash. Set aside emergency money and bills due before the potential maturity date. Put that portion in easy access.
- Give each remaining sum a date. Write down when you could next need it. A six-month bond is unsuitable for money that might be required in three months; a five-year term is unsuitable for a planned two-year payment.
- Check live AERs on more than one comparison source. MoneyHelper cites comparison services such as Moneyfacts and MoneySavingExpert, but rates can change between the listing and your application. Recheck the provider’s own page.
- Read the rate mechanics. Confirm whether the rate is variable or fixed, whether a bonus expires, the balance qualifying for the advertised AER, and how much notice is required for a withdrawal.
- Model the tax position. Estimate interest from all your accounts for the tax year, then consider the PSA or a Cash ISA. Include the date on which a fixed bond pays its interest.
- Inspect access and funding rules. Check early-withdrawal penalties, closure rights, transfer limits, minimum and maximum deposits, and whether further deposits are allowed.
- Verify FSCS authorisation. Aggregate balances across brands sharing a licence before transferring the money.
- Record the maturity date. Put a reminder in your calendar well before the decision window. A bond may automatically reinvest or move to a lower variable rate if you do nothing.
Using a split strategy to manage rate uncertainty
Splitting removes the need to make one all-or-nothing prediction. Keep an accessible reserve, then divide the money that can be locked away between different maturity dates. For example, one portion could remain easy access, another could mature in six or twelve months, and a further portion could use a longer term. The exact percentages should reflect your emergency needs, expected spending and tolerance for rate changes.

Staggered maturities create regular points at which you can reinvest at the rates then available. They also reduce the risk of having every pound locked just before rates rise or every pound exposed to a cut. Each bond still needs its own check for penalty, tax timing and FSCS concentration.

Illustrative rate scenarios
The figures below show how the contract features work; they are not live offers.
| Scenario | Easy access | Fixed bond | Practical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rates fall after opening | The provider may reduce the variable rate. | The agreed rate remains until maturity. | The fixed saver has more certainty, provided the money is not needed early. |
| Rates rise after opening | The provider may increase the rate, and you can switch if a better account appears. | The old rate remains until maturity. | Easy access may earn more, while the fixed saver has given up flexibility. |
| Unexpected bill before maturity | Money is normally available under the account’s access terms. | Withdrawal may be blocked or may cost a substantial amount of interest. | Liquidity can outweigh a higher fixed AER. |
For context only, MoneyHelper reported Financial Conduct Authority averages of 1.99% for instant-access accounts and 3.52% for fixed-rate accounts in December 2023. Those are historical averages, not current quotes and not a forecast for October 2026.
Common traps and how to avoid them
Chasing a temporary bonus
A bonus can lift the displayed AER for a limited period. Record the bonus end date and the underlying rate; decide in advance whether to switch when the bonus expires.
Ignoring withdrawal penalties
Some fixed bonds calculate an early-exit charge as a number of days’ or months’ interest. Ask whether the penalty can reduce your original deposit, whether partial withdrawals are possible and whether closure is at the provider’s discretion.

Fixing the emergency fund
A high rate cannot compensate for being unable to pay an urgent bill. Keep the emergency portion accessible even if that means accepting a variable rate.
Best Value
Assuming every brand has separate FSCS cover
Check the authorised firm and combine balances across its trading names. The £120,000 limit is per person per licence, not per app or logo.
Forgetting maturity instructions
Read the maturity letter and note the deadline for taking the money. If the bond rolls into a new term automatically, you may be locked again unless you act during the stated window.
Comparing gross rates without tax
Include your PSA, other interest and ISA availability. A slightly lower ISA rate can produce more spendable interest than a higher taxable rate once your allowance is used.
What to do when a fixed bond matures
- Confirm the maturity date and the date on which withdrawals are penalty-free.
- Check whether interest is paid separately or added to the balance, and record the tax year in which it is paid.
- Compare the provider’s renewal rate with current easy-access and fixed alternatives.
- Move the money during the permitted window if the new term or rate does not fit your plans.
- Recheck FSCS totals before adding the matured balance to another account.
Do not assume loyalty produces the best rate. The account’s post-maturity terms, not the rate you originally accepted, determine what happens next.
Bottom line for a UK saver facing uncertain rates
Use easy access for flexibility, emergencies and money with an uncertain spending date. Use a fixed-rate bond for money you can leave untouched and for which a guaranteed maturity value matters more than the possibility of benefiting from future rate rises. Compare the after-tax return, withdrawal rules, payment timing, maturity handling and FSCS licence before looking at the headline AER. A deliberate split and staggered maturities can give you both liquidity and some protection if rates move in either direction.
