Fixed or variable energy tariff: which is safer when gas prices are volatile?

Short answer: a fixed tariff is safer if a sudden rise would damage your household budget, because the agreed gas and electricity unit rates and standing charges stay unchanged for the contract term. A standard variable tariff is safer if flexibility matters more, you expect prices to fall, or the available fixed deal carries a large premium. Its rates can change as the market moves and as Ofgem reviews the price cap.

Neither option makes your total bill predictable. On a fixed deal, your bill still changes with how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) you use. On a variable deal, the price cap limits eligible unit rates and standing charges, not your annual spending. The sensible choice is therefore a comparison of the whole contract against your actual consumption, budget tolerance and likely time in the property.

What the two tariff types actually fix or change

Fixed tariffs

A fixed tariff sets the price you pay per unit of gas or electricity and the daily standing charge for a stated contract length. If wholesale energy costs rise during that period, the agreed rates do not change under the contract. Citizens Advice says a supplier cannot increase an agreed fixed price unless the government raises VAT.

“Fixed” does not mean a fixed monthly bill. Your payment rises if you use more kWh and falls if you use less. A direct-debit amount may be adjusted by the supplier to keep your account in balance, but the underlying unit rates and standing charges remain those in the agreement.

Standard variable tariffs

A standard variable tariff (SVT) has rates that move with the supplier’s pricing and the wider energy market. Ofgem’s price-cap framework limits the maximum unit rates and standing charges suppliers can charge eligible domestic SVT customers. Ofgem reviews the cap every three months.

The cap is a limit on prices, not a promise about the size of your bill. Ofgem puts it plainly: “It does not limit the cost of your total bill.” A high-use home pays more than a low-use home even when both are subject to the same capped rates.

Which is safer when gas prices are volatile?

Question Fixed tariff Standard variable tariff
Protection if prices rise Strong protection for the agreed unit rates and standing charges during the fixed term. Rates can rise at a cap review, subject to the applicable Ofgem limit.
Benefit if prices fall You normally keep paying the contracted rate until the term ends. Rates can fall when the supplier reprices, subject to the tariff’s terms.
Budget certainty More predictable price per kWh; total cost still depends on usage. Less predictable because both usage and future rates can change.
Ability to leave Leaving before the end date may trigger an exit fee; check the contract. Usually more flexible, but check notice and tariff-specific conditions.
Exposure to the price cap Not protected by the cap once you agree a fixed tariff. Eligible SVT rates are subject to the cap.
Main risk Paying a premium after market prices fall, or paying an exit fee to switch. Paying more after a sharp market rise and having to absorb changing bills.

For a household that cannot absorb a sudden increase, the fixed option is usually the safer form of insurance, provided its premium is reasonable and the household expects to stay for the full term. For a household that values the freedom to switch, expects falling prices, or is being offered an unusually expensive fix, an SVT can be the safer financial gamble.

How Ofgem’s price cap changes the decision

What the cap covers

Ofgem’s cap applies to eligible domestic standard variable tariffs. It limits the maximum unit rates and daily standing charges, with levels varying by region, payment method, fuel and meter type. It is not one nationwide annual bill figure.

What the cap does not cover

  • It does not cap the total amount you spend in a year.
  • It does not apply to a fixed tariff you have agreed.
  • It does not automatically cover every tracker, time-of-use, business or heat-network arrangement.
  • It does not guarantee that a supplier’s offer is the cheapest available option.

Tracker tariffs need particular care. Citizens Advice warns that a tracker may have a supplier-set maximum above Ofgem’s cap or no cap at all. Do not assume that a tariff described as variable or market-linked has the same protection as an SVT.

The cost comparison that avoids misleading monthly figures

Compare annual costs using your household’s actual gas and electricity kWh. A generic monthly direct-debit quote can conceal different usage assumptions, standing charges or payment-method discounts.

  1. Find your latest 12-month gas and electricity consumption in kWh. If you have moved recently, use the best available annual estimate and label it as an estimate.
  2. Record the proposed gas unit rate, electricity unit rate, gas standing charge and electricity standing charge for each tariff.
  3. Calculate annual unit costs separately: gas kWh × gas unit rate and electricity kWh × electricity unit rate.
  4. Calculate annual standing charges separately: daily charge × 365 for gas and electricity.
  5. Add the four amounts and include any stated discounts, fees or mandatory conditions.
  6. Run a second calculation with higher and lower usage if your consumption is uncertain. The tariff with the lowest cost at one usage level may not be cheapest at another.

Keep gas and electricity separate while comparing. A supplier can offer a competitive electricity rate but an expensive gas rate, or the reverse. Standing charges matter particularly in a low-use home because they are payable even when consumption is minimal.

When a fixed tariff is the safer choice

Your budget has little room for a shock

If a higher cap would force you to cut essentials, a fixed price can buy meaningful certainty. You are paying to transfer some market-rise risk to the supplier for the contract period. The protection applies to the contracted rates, not to your consumption.

You expect to remain until the end date

A fixed deal is easier to justify when you expect to live at the property for the whole term. Moving, switching to a different supplier or changing circumstances before the end can expose you to an exit fee or leave you paying for a contract you no longer need. Check the exact fee and any permitted fee-free switching window before signing.

The premium is affordable

Compare the fixed offer with the relevant current SVT cost using your own kWh. A modest premium may be reasonable insurance for a tight budget. A large premium means you are paying substantially for protection that may never be needed, especially if prices fall.

You prefer administrative simplicity

Some households would rather accept one known rate than monitor cap announcements and supplier repricing. That preference has value, but confirm the contract’s end date and what happens afterward so a later default tariff does not come as a surprise.

When a standard variable tariff is the safer choice

You need flexibility

An SVT avoids committing to a fixed term, which can matter if you may move home, change occupancy or want to switch quickly when a better deal appears. Read the supplier’s conditions rather than assuming every variable tariff has identical notice rules.

You expect prices to fall

Variable rates can benefit from falling market prices, while a fixed contract normally keeps its agreed rate. This is not a guaranteed saving: future wholesale prices, supplier decisions and cap reviews are uncertain.

Fixed offers are materially above the capped rate

If the available fix is far more expensive than your properly calculated SVT cost, staying variable may be rational for a household able to tolerate increases. Recheck the comparison whenever a new fixed offer appears or the cap changes.

You can absorb payment changes

Variable tariffs suit households with emergency savings or enough monthly headroom to manage a higher bill. They are less suitable when a modest price movement would create arrears or require cutting essential spending.

A dated market reference, not a current quote

Ofgem’s State of the Market: Energy Retail Highlights January 2026 reported that, as of October 2025, the cheapest tariff was approximately £265 below the price cap. That figure is a historical market snapshot, not a current offer or a forecast. Supplier prices, cap levels, taxes, levies and regional differences can change, so do not use £265 as an assumed saving in your own calculation.

Check these contract details before choosing

  • Term and end date: note the exact start and expiry dates, not just “12 months” or “fixed.”
  • Exit fee: check the amount for each fuel and the circumstances in which it applies.
  • Renewal or default tariff: find out what happens when the fix ends and when the supplier will contact you.
  • Unit rates: compare gas and electricity individually, including any regional variation.
  • Standing charges: calculate them for 365 days; they continue regardless of usage.
  • Payment method: direct debit, standard credit, prepayment and other methods may have different prices or eligibility.
  • Meter type: smart, traditional and prepayment meters can affect available tariffs.
  • Time-of-use requirements: confirm whether the deal requires a particular meter or changes rates by time of day.
  • Credit and account conditions: check whether a deposit, credit balance or specific billing arrangement is required.

A practical decision process

Step 1: Set your risk limit

Decide the largest monthly increase you could manage without borrowing or missing essential payments. This is more useful than asking whether a tariff is “cheap,” because it identifies whether payment certainty is worth a premium.

Step 2: Establish your baseline

Use the latest 12-month kWh figures and current tariff rates to calculate your annual baseline. Separate gas, electricity and standing charges so you can see which part of the bill drives the difference.

Step 3: Stress-test the variable option

Model a higher capped rate and a lower rate, without pretending either outcome is a forecast. If the higher case would be unaffordable, treat that as evidence in favour of a reasonably priced fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Stress-test the fixed option

Calculate what you would pay if market prices fell and you remained on the fix. Add any exit fee you might face if your circumstances change. This reveals the cost of certainty.

Step 5: Check eligibility and geography

Confirm that the quoted tariff is available for your region, payment method, fuel combination and meter. The evidence and terminology here are UK-focused, and Citizens Advice pages cited for these explanations cover England and Wales. Northern Ireland has a different regulatory arrangement, so do not assume the Ofgem framework applies in the same way.

Step 6: Recheck immediately before switching

Supplier offers and cap levels change. Recalculate using the rates shown at the point of application and save the tariff’s terms, rates, standing charges, end date and exit-fee conditions.

Common mistakes that make a “safe” tariff expensive

Confusing a capped rate with a capped bill

Using more energy produces a larger bill even when rates are within the cap. Improve insulation, heating controls or usage habits separately from the tariff decision; changing tariff type cannot remove consumption risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing only the monthly direct debit

Monthly payments can reflect supplier estimates, account balances or smoothing arrangements. Compare annual kWh costs and standing charges instead.

Ignoring the fixed-term exit fee

A fix can look attractive until a move or a better offer makes leaving necessary. Read the fee schedule and the contract’s switching provisions before accepting.

Assuming every variable product is protected

SVTs are not the same as trackers, time-of-use tariffs or heat-network arrangements. Identify the exact product and its price-setting formula.

Overlooking the post-fix default

Failing to diarise the end date can leave you on a different tariff after the protection expires. Record the date and begin comparing before the contract ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for a volatile gas market

Choose a fixed tariff when payment certainty is worth its premium, you can meet the contract term and a rise would materially harm your budget. Choose a standard variable tariff when flexibility and the chance to benefit from falling prices outweigh the discomfort of changing bills, and you have enough headroom to absorb a cap increase. Make the decision with actual kWh, both fuels’ standing charges, the exit fee, regional eligibility and the exact tariff type—not with a headline monthly estimate.
