Fix YouTube’s “Current Bitrate Is Lower Than Recommended” Warning

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

YouTube shows “The current bit rate value for the stream is lower than the recommended bit rate” when the bitrate it receives is below its recommendation for your selected codec, resolution and frame rate. Check those encoder settings against YouTube’s live-stream table, then confirm your outbound upload connection can sustain the target with about 20% headroom. If it cannot, lower the resolution and use the bitrate recommended for that setting.

What the warning means

The message compares the bitrate YouTube is receiving with its recommendation for the stream settings. There is no single bitrate target for every live stream: the recommended value varies by video codec, resolution and frame rate. The warning alone does not establish whether the cause is an encoder setting or a network problem.

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings for the combination you are actually sending. These are live-ingestion recommendations; do not substitute YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.

Check settings against YouTube’s recommendation

  1. Identify the actual output. In your encoder or YouTube Live Control Room, check the video codec, resolution and frame rate—not just what you intended to configure.
  2. Find the matching row. Compare those settings with YouTube’s live encoder table. For H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. AV1 and H.265 have different recommendations, so use the row for the codec you selected.
  3. Check bitrate mode and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm the encoder is applying the settings to the stream output.
  4. Test before going live. Send a test with motion and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health and messages in YouTube.

Make sure your upload connection has enough capacity

The relevant figure is available outbound upload bandwidth, not download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed the available upload capacity and recommends leaving about 20% headroom. Other devices and users sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the encoder.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Run an upload speed test under conditions close to your planned broadcast. A single result is not a guarantee that the connection will remain steady.
  2. Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the outbound capacity available to it, leaving approximately 20% unused as headroom.
  3. If the target does not fit reliably, lower the resolution and use YouTube’s recommendation for that new resolution, codec and frame rate.

Changing to wired Ethernet may help if you have identified unreliable Wi-Fi, but it does not increase the upload speed supplied by your internet plan or change the encoder’s bitrate.

Diagnose problems that persist

  • Settings look right, but YouTube still warns: Verify the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and CBR mode. A preset or profile may be producing different output from the values you expected.
  • Upload capacity is close to the stream target: Reduce resolution or other settings that determine the required bitrate. Leave headroom rather than planning to use the connection’s full measured capacity.
  • The warning accompanies unstable stream health: Check encoder CPU load and stream quality, and update the encoder software if needed. Test the outbound connection as well; the bitrate warning does not identify which side is at fault.
  • You suspect the local output: Review a local archive, if available. If it is healthy, test the outbound connection; YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if the connection test finds a problem.

Work through settings and connection capacity before replacing equipment. The warning by itself is not evidence that you need a new encoder or computer.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix for an encoder warning during a camera-based broadcast. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud continues the stream without a computer or home connection staying on.
