If OBS is sending a YouTube Live stream with variable bitrate (VBR), change the streaming rate control to CBR and set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. But VBR is not automatically the cause of every buffering report: first check whether OBS is dropping network frames or whether only viewers experience pauses.
Why CBR is the right starting point for YouTube Live
YouTube’s official live-encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS streams. CBR keeps the configured streaming rate steadier; with VBR, the rate can vary as the video’s encoding demands change. For a live stream, use the CBR recommendation and choose a bitrate that fits your available upload bandwidth—not simply the highest value listed for your resolution.
YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. The current encoder guidance and its codec-specific settings are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page. The page does not show a publication year, so its figures should be treated as current guidance rather than assigned an unsupported date.
Switch OBS streaming output to CBR
- In OBS, open Settings, then select Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced if the streaming encoder controls are not visible.
- Open the Streaming tab and find the encoder’s Rate Control setting. Change it from VBR to CBR.
- Set the bitrate using the guidance below, then check the keyframe interval. Use 2 seconds; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Select Apply and OK. Run a test stream and watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
OBS encoder labels and available controls can vary by encoder and version. In OBS 31.0’s NVENC documentation, for example, “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality” is a rate-control option with a maximum bitrate. That recording-oriented option does not change YouTube’s separate live-ingest recommendation: use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS streaming.

Choose a bitrate your connection can actually hold
YouTube’s recommended video bitrates depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following H.264 figures are from Google / YouTube Help’s encoder settings page, retrieved October 3, 2026; the page’s publication year is not shown. They are recommendations for the video stream, not proof that a particular internet connection can sustain them.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These values apply to the listed H.264 rows only. YouTube provides separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the row for the codec OBS is actually sending instead of applying H.264 numbers to another codec. Audio also uses bandwidth, so do not treat the video figure as the complete stream bitrate.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Its guidance also says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth; other people, devices, or applications using the same connection can reduce the capacity left for OBS. If your upload rate varies, choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than aiming at a short-lived speed-test peak. See YouTube’s encoder settings and its network guidance.
Diagnose which kind of buffering is happening
OBS network drops and viewer-side buffering point to different parts of the delivery path. Check the OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room before changing multiple settings at once.

OBS shows increasing “Dropped Frames (Network)”
This indicates that the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is not stable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Change to CBR, lower the bitrate, and preserve the recommended headroom. If the issue continues, test another ingest server if one is available and check whether a VPN, security software, bundled network utility, or other network condition is interfering. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers these connection-side checks.
OBS has no network drops, but viewers report pauses or loading
A clean OBS dropped-frame counter does not rule out playback problems. Viewers have different devices and connections; a bitrate, resolution, or frame rate that works for one audience member may be too demanding for another. Try a less demanding output and check the stream’s latency setting. OBS explains this distinction in its stream buffering troubleshooting guide.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, but that cannot guarantee every device or connection will play smoothly. YouTube also cautions that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. If buffering affects viewers despite no OBS network drops, consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better suits the event. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Check YouTube’s stream-health messages
During a test, compare the Control Room’s stream-health status with OBS statistics. A warning there may help identify an ingest or configuration issue; viewer reports alone do not tell you whether the problem is at ingest, transcoding, or playback. YouTube recommends testing before the event with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a mitigation
OBS’s Dynamic Bitrate option can lower bitrate when the network cannot keep up. It may help reduce interruptions during bandwidth dips, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can lower image quality. Treat it as a stopgap, not a substitute for diagnosing network drops or selecting a sustainable CBR bitrate. Details are in the OBS Dynamic Bitrate guide.
Test the complete stream before going live
- Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to use for the event.
- Include representative movement and audio; a static screen may not reveal the same encoding or playback demands.
- Watch OBS’s network dropped-frame count and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages during the test.
- If network drops rise, reduce the load or address the connection. If OBS stays clean but viewers buffer, test a more accessible output and review latency.
