Use Windows’ microphone Input volume control, not the Time & language page, to set speech-recognition level. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the microphone under Input, run Start test while speaking normally, replay the sample, and adjust Input volume. The Time & language > Speech page launches the microphone setup wizard; it does not contain the documented level slider.

What “microphone gain” means in Windows

Windows does not usually label its speech microphone control “gain.” The setting that performs the practical equivalent for an application is the selected device’s Input volume slider. It controls how strongly Windows receives the microphone signal before speech-recognition software processes it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Two separate tasks are often confused:

  • Input level: how loud the microphone signal is to Windows. Adjust this in Settings > System > Sound > Input.
  • Speech setup and recognition: choosing a microphone and running the speech wizard. Start this from Settings > Time & language > Speech or, on current Windows 11 releases, from Voice access.

If you adjust the wrong device, nothing changes for the microphone that speech recognition is actually using. Always confirm the selected input before changing its level.

Set and test the microphone level in Windows 11

These steps use the current Windows 11 Sound controls documented by Microsoft. They work for built-in microphones, wired headsets, Bluetooth headsets, USB microphones and other inputs that Windows exposes as recording devices.

Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
  1. Connect the microphone and make sure it is switched on. For a headset, check that its inline mute switch is not engaged.
  2. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  3. Scroll to Input. Select the microphone you intend to use. Do not assume that the first device listed is the one attached to your headset or webcam.
  4. Open that device’s properties. Under Input settings, choose Start test.
  5. Speak at your normal conversational distance and volume. A normal sample is more useful than shouting directly into the capsule.
  6. Choose Stop test, then Play to hear the recording.
  7. Move Input volume up or down, run the test again, and replay the new sample. Keep the setting that makes ordinary speech clear without introducing obvious distortion or excessive room noise.

Microsoft’s microphone instructions are available at How to set up and test microphones in Windows. The test is valuable because it checks the signal reaching Windows rather than relying on a speech application’s own meter.

What the playback test tells you

  • Clear, comfortably loud playback: the Windows input level is probably suitable. If recognition still fails, continue with device selection, permissions and speech settings.
  • Very quiet playback: raise Input volume, then check the microphone’s connection and position. Microsoft lists those physical checks as part of its microphone troubleshooting guidance.
  • No playback at all: verify that the intended device is selected, connected and not muted. A permission block can also prevent applications from accessing it.
  • Noise or an unpleasantly overloaded recording: lower the level, move the microphone slightly farther away, and retest. Filtering and level are different controls; filtering cannot repair an incorrectly selected or disconnected device.

There is no universal “correct” slider number. The useful target is a repeatable recording of normal speech that listeners and recognition software can understand.

Use Time & language > Speech for the recognition wizard

The Speech page remains the place to start Microsoft’s speech-recognition microphone setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Speech.
  2. Under Microphone, select Get started.
  3. Follow the wizard and respond to its prompts. It reports issues it detects during setup.

This wizard helps Windows configure speech recognition, but the documented level adjustment is still on the separate Sound page. If the wizard says your voice is too quiet, return to System > Sound > Input, test the selected microphone, change Input volume, and run the sample again. Microsoft’s overview is Use voice recognition in Windows.

Windows 10 path and the Windows 11 change

On Windows 10, the labels are similar:

  • Open Settings > Time & Language > Speech and choose the microphone’s Get started button to run speech setup.
  • For the actual input level, open Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the microphone, record a test sample and adjust Input volume.

Windows 11 changed the speech-control feature. Microsoft says Voice access replaced Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later beginning in September 2024. Older Windows 11 guidance and Windows 10 documentation may still mention WSR, so the feature name you see depends on the Windows version and support page you are following. The version distinction is documented in Use voice access to control your PC and author text with your voice.

Configure the microphone used by Voice access

Voice access is Microsoft’s current hands-free speech-control feature for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Its setup can select a preferred or default microphone and provides a link back to Windows Sound settings when you need to change the device or its level. Use Set up voice access for the setup sequence and Get started with voice access for first-use controls.

Voice access initially needs an internet connection to download language files. After setup, recognition is performed on the device and can work without an internet connection. This means a successful Voice access setup does not remove the need to configure the Windows input level: the feature still depends on the microphone signal delivered by the selected device.

Input volume and noise filtering solve different problems

Changing level and removing noise are complementary, not interchangeable. Input volume determines the strength of the microphone signal. Voice access filtering attempts to reduce unwanted environmental sound after the signal is captured.

Control Where to find it Use it when What it cannot do
Input volume Settings > System > Sound > Input > selected microphone Your voice is too quiet or too strong in the Windows test recording. It cannot reconnect a missing device, grant microphone permission or remove all background noise.
No filtering Voice access speech-recognition settings You want unprocessed microphone audio. It does not compensate for a poor input level.
Remove background noise only Voice access speech-recognition settings Steady environmental noise is interfering with recognition. It does not replace selecting and testing the correct microphone.
Voice Isolation Voice access speech-recognition settings Moderate background conversation or nearby speakers are competing with your voice. Microsoft notes that very noisy conditions can still produce recognition errors.

Microsoft describes these options in Improve speech recognition with Voice access. The processing runs on the device, and Microsoft’s instructions say a voice signature used for Voice Isolation is stored locally.

Follow this troubleshooting order when recognition is quiet

Work through the checks in order. Each step eliminates a different failure, so jumping straight to replacement hardware can leave the real cause unresolved.

  1. Check the physical connection. Reseat a USB plug, confirm a headset is paired, and inspect any hardware mute switch. Position the microphone close enough for normal speech but not directly against your mouth or rubbing on clothing.
  2. Confirm the selected input. In Settings > System > Sound > Input, choose the device you are actually speaking into. Webcam and laptop microphones often remain available when a headset is connected, making an incorrect selection easy to miss.
  3. Run the Windows test. Select Start test, speak normally, choose Stop test, and select Play. Adjust Input volume and repeat until the sample is intelligible.
  4. Check microphone privacy. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on microphone access and, where applicable, desktop-app access. Without these permissions, a device can appear in Sound while a speech application is blocked from using it.
  5. Check Voice access’s microphone choice. If you use Voice access, open its setup or settings and select the preferred/default microphone. Use its link to Windows Sound settings to retest the device and level.
  6. Try filtering only after the signal works. If the playback sample is clear but background conversation or room noise causes errors, choose the appropriate Voice access filtering mode. Do not use filtering as a substitute for a silent, disconnected or incorrectly selected microphone.
  7. Consider hardware service or replacement last. Microsoft’s guidance supports checking connection, position, permissions and Input volume first; it does not present buying a new microphone as the routine fix. Replace or repair hardware only when those checks show that the device itself remains unusable.

For Microsoft’s diagnostic sequence, see Fix microphone problems.

Choose the right setting for the symptom

What you observe First action Next action if it persists
The test sample is silent. Select the actual microphone and check connection, mute state and privacy permissions. Run the test again; investigate the device only after Windows still receives no signal.
Your voice is audible but too quiet. Increase Input volume in the selected microphone’s Sound properties. Improve microphone position and rerun the sample.
The Windows sample is clear, but Voice access misunderstands speech in a busy room. Keep the working Input volume and enable the suitable filtering option. Reduce nearby noise or move closer to the microphone; Voice Isolation is not guaranteed in very noisy conditions.
Voice access uses the wrong microphone. Choose the preferred/default microphone in Voice access setup or settings. Return to Sound and verify that the same device is selected and produces a test recording.
Recognition works online but not after disconnecting. Confirm that Voice access completed its language download while connected. After setup, device-based Voice access should be able to operate without internet; check the selected language and microphone again.

Understand local and online speech recognition

Microphone level and privacy mode are separate decisions. Microsoft distinguishes device-based speech recognition, which processes voice locally, from online speech recognition, which sends voice data to Microsoft to provide the service and create transcriptions. Read the explanation in Speech, voice activation, inking, typing, and privacy.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Voice access’s post-setup, on-device operation is useful when an internet connection is unavailable, but it does not mean every Windows speech feature uses the same processing path. Check the privacy description for the particular feature you enable, and choose settings consistent with whether local processing or online services are acceptable to you.

What to do when the slider or wizard seems missing

Menu names can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the roles remain distinct. If you are on the Speech page and cannot find a numerical gain control, that is expected: select Get started there, then move to System > Sound > Input for the level test and slider. If Sound shows several inputs, open each likely device and identify the one whose playback contains your voice. Changing the slider for a dormant webcam or monitor microphone will not affect a headset selected by Voice access.

Likewise, if the Sound test is clear but the speech wizard still reports a problem, do not keep raising the level indefinitely. Recheck the microphone chosen by the wizard or Voice access, confirm microphone and desktop-app permissions, and test again. Excessive level can make room noise more prominent without fixing a device-selection error.

Internet, language files and offline use

Voice access has a one-time setup requirement that is easy to overlook. Its initial language setup needs an internet connection so Windows can download the language files. Once that setup is complete, Voice access uses on-device speech recognition and can continue working without internet access. An offline failure immediately after installation therefore points first to incomplete language setup, not automatically to a bad microphone.

This offline behavior applies to Voice access after setup. Microsoft separately describes online speech recognition as a service that sends voice data to Microsoft to provide recognition and create transcriptions. Treat the network requirement and the privacy choice as separate questions: a microphone can be correctly adjusted in Sound regardless of whether a particular speech feature processes audio locally or online.

Do you need a new microphone?

Routine gain configuration does not require buying equipment. A built-in laptop microphone, headset, Bluetooth input or USB microphone can be suitable when Windows detects it, the test playback contains clear speech, and permissions allow access. A USB microphone is a reasonable optional replacement only when the existing device is absent, damaged or still unusable after checking connection, position, selected input, Input volume and privacy settings. No particular brand or model is required for this Windows procedure, and hardware cost is not a prerequisite for changing the level.

Practical setup checklist

  • Connect and unmute the intended microphone.
  • Open System > Sound > Input and select that exact device.
  • Run Start test, speak normally, stop, and play the sample.
  • Adjust Input volume in small changes and retest.
  • Use Time & language > Speech > Microphone > Get started for the speech wizard.
  • On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, configure Voice access rather than relying on older WSR instructions.
  • Review Privacy & security > Microphone permissions.
  • Use Voice access filtering only when environmental noise is the problem.
  • Investigate repair or replacement only after selection, connection, position, level and permissions have been checked.

Bottom line

For Windows speech recognition, configure the microphone in two places for two different purposes: use Time & language > Speech to launch setup, and use System > Sound > Input to set and verify the microphone’s effective gain through Input volume. Test the exact device, replay the sample, check permissions, then add Voice access noise filtering only if background sound—not signal level—is causing the errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the microphone gain control in Windows?

Windows documents the practical gain control as Input volume. Open Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the microphone, open its properties, run Start test, and adjust the slider before testing again.

Does Time & language > Speech contain the volume slider?

No. Time & language > Speech starts the microphone speech-recognition wizard with Get started. The documented input-level slider is on the selected device’s page under System > Sound > Input.

What should I do if the test recording is silent?

Confirm that the intended microphone is selected, connected and unmuted. Then check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and enable microphone access and desktop-app access where needed. Repeat the Windows test before considering hardware replacement.

Should I turn up Input volume all the way?

There is no universal correct number. Speak normally, play the test sample and choose the lowest setting that makes ordinary speech clear and comfortably loud without obvious overload or excessive room noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Voice access still misunderstand me after I set the level?

If the Windows sample is clear, the remaining problem may be device selection, permissions or environmental noise. Verify Voice access is using the same microphone, then try Remove background noise only or Voice Isolation. Microsoft notes that very noisy conditions can still cause errors.

Which feature should I use on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later?

Microsoft says Voice access replaced Windows Speech Recognition for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later beginning in September 2024. Older Windows 10 and legacy instructions may still refer to WSR.

Can Voice access work without an internet connection?

Yes, after its initial setup downloads the required language files while online. Voice access then uses on-device recognition. If it fails offline immediately after installation, complete the language download and recheck the selected microphone.

Do I need to buy a USB microphone?

No. A purchase is not part of normal gain configuration. Consider a USB microphone only if the existing device is missing, damaged or remains unusable after checking connection, position, device selection, Input volume and privacy permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is local speech recognition more private than online recognition?

Microsoft distinguishes device-based recognition, which processes voice locally, from online recognition, which sends voice data to Microsoft to provide recognition and create transcriptions. Review the privacy behavior of the specific Windows feature you enable.

The Bottom Line

Use Time & language > Speech for the setup wizard, but set microphone gain through System > Sound > Input > Input volume. Test the exact device, verify permissions and use Voice access filtering only when background noise—not signal level—is the problem.
