If your phone and laptop are using the same Wi-Fi network at about the same time, but only the laptop cannot get online, start by checking the laptop—not by replacing the router. The comparison narrows the likely causes to laptop settings, its saved network profile, VPN or proxy configuration, IP and DNS state, Wi-Fi driver, or compatibility with the router. It does not identify the cause by itself.
First make sure the phone is actually on that Wi-Fi network, not using cellular data, a different network name, or another access point. “Connected to Wi-Fi” means the laptop has joined the wireless network; it does not necessarily mean it can reach the internet. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and 11. Mac users can start with Apple’s guidance for troubleshooting external networking devices.

First determine whether the problem is the laptop or the network
Test another device on the same Wi-Fi name (SSID) and, if possible, try the laptop on a different network such as a phone hotspot. These checks are clues, not guarantees: devices can use different Wi-Fi bands or access points, and a phone may silently fall back to cellular data.

| What you observe | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Other devices work on the same Wi-Fi network; only the laptop fails. | A laptop setting, saved profile, adapter, or software issue is more likely. | Check Wi-Fi state, band compatibility, VPN or proxy, IP and DNS, and the driver. |
| The laptop works on a phone hotspot but not on home Wi-Fi. | A home-router compatibility, band, or saved-network issue is plausible. | Try the other band if available, forget and rejoin the home network, and consult the router documentation for security or filtering settings. |
| Several devices fail on the home network. | The router, modem, or internet service may be involved. | Check equipment status and follow the router or ISP’s restart instructions. |
| The laptop joins Wi-Fi but reports no internet. | Wireless association succeeded, but internet access did not. | Check VPN or proxy, IP and DNS configuration, and whether the laptop can reach the router. |
| The laptop sees no networks or the Wi-Fi adapter is missing. | Wi-Fi may be disabled, the band unsupported, or the driver or hardware at fault. | Check switches and settings, adapter status, supported bands, and the correct driver for the laptop model. |

1. Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off
Check the laptop’s Wi-Fi setting and turn Airplane mode off. Some laptops also have a physical wireless switch or a function-key shortcut; check the device’s markings or manual if Wi-Fi appears unavailable.
2. Confirm the network name and reconnect
Make sure the laptop is joining the intended network and that the password is current. In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, choose the affected network, select Forget, then reconnect and enter the password. Menu labels can vary slightly by Windows version.
3. Toggle Wi-Fi, then restart the laptop
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on. If that does not help, restart the laptop; a restart can clear a temporary network or software fault. Save your work first.

On Windows 11, open Get Help and start the Network and Internet troubleshooter. It can identify common connectivity problems and suggest a fix. Windows 10 troubleshooting entry points differ; follow the current Microsoft support instructions for that release.

5. Compare another device on the same Wi-Fi
Check that the phone or other device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network—not cellular data or a guest network. If other devices also fail, move to the router and service checks in step 11. If only the laptop fails, continue with laptop-specific checks.
6. Try the other Wi-Fi band
If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, connect the laptop to the other one. Some laptop adapters do not support every band. Neither band is automatically better in every location: signal range, interference, and device capabilities matter.
7. Check VPN and proxy settings
A VPN or manually configured proxy can change how the laptop routes traffic. If you use a personal VPN or proxy, disconnect it temporarily or review its settings, then test again. On a Mac, Apple also recommends considering VPN and network-monitoring software when diagnosing access problems. Do not disable employer- or school-managed security tools without asking your IT administrator.
8. Renew the IP address and clear the DNS cache in Windows
Open Command Prompt as administrator. Run each command in order, waiting for it to finish before entering the next:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Then try loading a website again. These commands refresh the laptop’s IP configuration and clear cached DNS results; they will not fix every router, service, or hardware problem.
9. Check whether the laptop can reach the router
In Command Prompt, run ipconfig and find the Default Gateway under the active Wi-Fi adapter. Then ping that gateway, replacing the example with the address shown on your laptop:
ping 192.168.1.1
A reply shows that the laptop can reach the router, but it does not establish that the router has internet access. No reply is not a definitive diagnosis: network settings, router configuration, or other causes may be involved.
10. Update or reinstall the Wi-Fi adapter driver if symptoms point to it
If the adapter is missing, has an error, or stopped working after a driver change, check for the correct driver for your exact laptop model on the computer manufacturer’s support site. Before uninstalling a driver, make sure you have a way to reinstall it, such as a saved installer or another internet-connected device. Microsoft notes that Windows may reinstall the adapter after a restart; a generic driver may not suit every model.

11. Restart the router or modem when other devices are affected
If multiple devices cannot get online, check the router or modem status and restart the equipment using the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions. A restart can briefly disconnect every device. For a combined modem-router gateway, follow its specific procedure. Do not factory-reset the router as an early troubleshooting step; that can erase custom or service-provider settings.
12. Use Windows Network reset only as a last step
Windows Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings. Microsoft advises using it as a last resort. Afterward, VPN clients or virtual switches may need to be set up again. Consult Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting instructions for the version-specific path and implications before proceeding.

On a Mac, check for Wi-Fi Recommendations in Wi-Fi settings and run Wireless Diagnostics if the problem persists. Apple also advises checking external networking devices and their cables, and considering VPN or software that monitors network connections. For equipment restarts, follow the maker’s instructions; Apple recommends restarting multiple devices from the one nearest the internet connection outward.

If the phone is an iPhone or iPad, Apple’s Wi-Fi connection guidance can help check that it is truly connected to the network. Its network-settings reset has significant side effects: it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as mobile, VPN, and APN settings. That is a phone-specific reset, not a laptop fix.
When an external Wi-Fi adapter or repair makes sense
A USB Wi-Fi adapter is a fallback if the built-in adapter appears to have failed and software checks have not restored it. Before buying one, confirm operating-system support, compatible Wi-Fi bands, setup requirements, and any advice from the laptop manufacturer. Adapter documentation, such as the D-Link AE65U manual, illustrates that an external adapter still has installation and troubleshooting requirements; it is not evidence that a particular model will suit every laptop.
If the adapter remains absent or unusable after checking the correct driver and diagnostics, contact the laptop manufacturer or a repair service. For a managed work or school laptop, ask IT before changing network, VPN, or security settings.
