Fix the error by stopping the server, opening the active serverconfig.xml, and replacing any tutorial placeholder or malformed ServerIP value with an address appropriate to the connection you are testing. Use 127.0.0.1 or localhost only when connecting from the server computer itself. Players outside your home network need the host’s externally reachable address, plus working port-forwarding and firewall rules. A private address such as 192.168.x.x is not the public address remote friends should enter.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
If the address is already valid, a stopped server can still leave the game port locked after a restart. In post-A18 guidance, the recovery is to stop the server, wait about five minutes, and start it again; persistent cases may require the hosting provider to issue a provider-side stop or reset.

What “FormatException: An invalid IP address was specified” means
This is a server-network configuration exception. It does not indicate a damaged world, a gameplay rule, or a problem with a player’s character. The dedicated server is trying to parse an IP value and cannot use what it finds, or the server is starting into a condition where its game port is still held by an earlier process.
A Steam Community dedicated-server guide attributes the exact message to leaving the tutorial value in the configuration instead of replacing it with the server’s address. The guide’s original wording is: “You dident change the ip adress in the config file to your ip adress. do so.” The spelling is preserved from the 2013 community post, so treat it as historical configuration guidance rather than a guarantee for every current build: Steam dedicated-server guide.

A separate hosting knowledgebase identifies a second pattern in post-A18 versions: the game port can remain locked after a restart. Its prescribed remedy is a complete stop, a five-minute wait, and another start. If that does not release the port, the host may need to perform a “stop server” action: hosting-provider troubleshooting article.
First response: stop every server process
Do not edit a configuration file while an old dedicated-server process is still running. You can otherwise correct the file on disk while the active process continues using the previous value, or launch a second instance that competes for the same port.
- Stop the 7 Days to Die dedicated server from its control panel, service manager, launcher, or terminal.
- Check the process list on the host and end any remaining 7 Days to Die server process that belongs to the same instance. Do not terminate an unrelated game server.
- Record which launch command, service, or panel entry starts the server. That information identifies the configuration file that is actually being read.
- Leave the server fully stopped while you inspect and edit the file.
On a managed host, the control panel’s stop button is the authoritative action. If the panel reports “stopped” but the error returns immediately on start, ask support to confirm that the process and port were released rather than repeatedly clicking restart.
Which IP address belongs in serverconfig.xml?
The correct value depends on who is connecting and where the server runs. “Your IP” is not one universal number: loopback, private LAN, and public addresses have different jobs.
| Connection or deployment | Address to test or configure | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Client and server on the same computer | 127.0.0.1 or localhost |
It is not a route for friends connecting from the internet. |
| Another device on the same home or office LAN | The server computer’s private LAN address, commonly in a 192.168.x.x range, when the server build accepts or requires a bound local address |
That address normally is not reachable from outside the router. |
| Friends outside the LAN | The host’s externally reachable public address or the hostname supplied by the host | The address alone cannot bypass a missing port-forward or firewall rule. |
| Managed game host | The address and connection details shown by that provider | You may not control the underlying interface, NAT, or port allocation. |
The Steam guide specifically warns that a 192.168.x.x value is internal, not an external address. Giving that private address to a remote player usually sends them toward an address that exists only inside your router’s network. For a same-machine test, loopback is the cleanest choice because it never leaves the computer.

Do not leave a tutorial placeholder
Search the active file for ServerIP. Remove values that are plainly instructional text, including a placeholder such as yourexternalip_not_127.0.0.1. That string describes a tutorial decision; it is not an IPv4 address and will trigger parsing failure when the server expects an address.

Find and edit the active configuration file
Multiple copies of serverconfig.xml are common after testing a launcher, switching wrappers, or moving a server. Editing an unused copy has no effect, so identify the file named by the command or panel entry that starts this instance.
- Open the launch command, service definition, or hosting-panel file settings.
- Locate the
serverconfig.xmlpath or the configuration argument passed to the server. - Open that exact file in a plain-text editor while the server remains stopped.
- Find the
ServerIPproperty and inspect the complete value, including hidden spaces or copied punctuation. - Replace the placeholder or malformed value with the address appropriate to your test:
127.0.0.1/localhostfor a local self-connection, or the externally reachable host address for remote players. - Save the file as plain text without changing its XML structure, encoding, or filename.
If the file has no ServerIP property, do not invent a new property based on an old guide. Server wrappers and builds can rename, ignore, or relocate settings. Check the configuration template shipped with the server distribution you are actually running, and compare property names before adding anything.
Restart correctly when the address is valid
A valid address does not rule out a stale port. The hosting-provider article says that, in post-A18 versions, the game port may stay locked after a restart. Use this sequence instead of an immediate stop-start loop.

- Stop the server and verify that its process has exited.
- Wait approximately five minutes with the server down. The provider’s wording is: “stop your server and let it sit for 5 minutes to give the port time to reset, then start again.” This is a recovery interval, not a measured guarantee for every build or operating system.
- Start the same server instance from the same panel, service, or command you identified earlier.
- Watch the startup log for the first configuration or binding error. If the server starts, test locally before asking remote players to connect.
If the exception returns after the wait, stop the instance again and contact the host. Request a provider-side “stop server” action or reset, using the exact error text and the time of the failed restart. A provider can release a process or port that is not visible to you through the customer panel.
Check NAT, port-forwarding, and firewall rules
Address selection and reachability are separate checks. A syntactically valid ServerIP can let the server start while outside players still cannot join. The Steam guide includes a DisableNAT setting and recommends checking port-forwarding when external connections fail. That guide is old, so confirm the property name, supported values, and required port against the server version and wrapper you use before changing it.
Self-hosted server behind a router
- Give the server computer a stable private LAN address, or configure a DHCP reservation, so the router’s forwarding target does not change.
- Forward the game port required by your current server build from the router to that private address. Do not assume a port shown in an old tutorial is correct for every version or wrapper.
- Allow the server executable and the required port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Test from the LAN with the private address, then test from a genuinely external network. A test made from inside the same router may not prove that internet NAT loopback works.
Managed server
You may not have access to the provider’s router or host firewall. Use the public address, hostname, and port displayed in the panel, and ask support whether the instance is behind provider NAT. Send support the server version, the exact startup error, confirmation that you waited five minutes, and whether the process was stopped from the panel.
Diagnose the failure by its timing
| When it fails | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately on every start | The active configuration likely still contains a placeholder, malformed value, or a value unsupported by that build. | Trace the launch path, reopen the active file, and validate ServerIP. |
| Only after restarting an otherwise working server | A stale process or locked game port is plausible. | Stop all instances, wait about five minutes, then start once. |
| The server starts, but LAN clients fail | The binding address, local firewall, or LAN route may be wrong. | Test loopback on the host, then the host’s private LAN address from another local device. |
| LAN works, remote players fail | NAT, port-forwarding, public-address selection, or an edge firewall is more likely than XML parsing. | Use the external address and verify forwarding and firewall rules. |
| The error persists after a clean stop and valid address | The provider or wrapper may retain a process, port, or version-specific configuration problem. | Request a provider-side stop/reset and provide the startup log. |
This timing approach prevents changing NAT settings when the server cannot even parse its configuration, and prevents repeatedly editing XML when the actual problem is a port that never released.

- With the server stopped, set the active configuration to a valid local test value supported by your build, commonly
127.0.0.1orlocalhost. - Wait the full recovery interval if the failure followed a restart.
- Start the server and connect from the same computer. A successful local connection demonstrates that the configuration can be parsed and the process can bind locally.
- For a second device on the same LAN, test using the server computer’s private address. If this fails, inspect local firewall and binding behavior before touching internet NAT.
- For an outside player, switch to the externally reachable address and test the forwarded port from outside the LAN.
Do not distribute the private LAN address to remote players simply because it worked in the second test. Scope matters: an address can be correct for one hop and unusable for another.

Using the public address for a local self-test
Some routers do not support NAT loopback consistently. A local player may fail against the public address even though an external player can connect. Use loopback for a same-computer test and the private LAN address for a same-network test, then reserve the public address for outside connections.
Using 192.168.x.x for internet friends
That range is private/internal. It identifies the host inside the local network, not the router’s internet-facing endpoint. Keep it as the forwarding destination or LAN test address; do not treat it as the public address.

Editing the wrong file
A launcher can point to a different configuration path than the file you opened manually. Confirm the path in the actual start command or panel entry before judging whether the change worked.
Leaving the port number in the IP field
An IP field is not automatically a combined address-and-port field. If the template separates address and port properties, keep them separate. Follow the current template for your build rather than copying syntax from a historical guide.

Restarting repeatedly without a pause
Rapid restarts can preserve the very port-lock condition you are trying to clear. Stop once, verify the process is gone, wait about five minutes, and start once.
Version and evidence limits
The cited Steam guide was published on December 16, 2013, and a Steam support report associated with the issue is dated October 17, 2021. The hosting article refers to post-A18 behavior. These sources establish practical causes and recovery steps, but they do not document every October 2026 game build, operating system, platform, launcher, or server wrapper.
Property names such as DisableNAT, accepted address formats, default ports, and panel workflows can differ. Before changing a setting, compare the shipped configuration template and current server documentation for your exact distribution. If a current template does not contain a property mentioned in an older guide, treat that omission as meaningful rather than forcing the old key into the file.
When to escalate to the host
Escalate after you have confirmed all of the following:
- The server is stopped and no duplicate instance remains.
- The launch command points to the file you edited.
ServerIPcontains a real, supported value rather than tutorial text.- You selected an address appropriate to local, LAN, or remote use.
- You waited about five minutes after stopping when the issue followed a restart.
- The provider’s panel still reproduces the exception or does not release the instance.
Include the exact exception, server version, platform, configuration path, time of the failed start, and whether local testing worked. Ask specifically for a provider-side stop/reset if the game port appears locked. This gives support actionable information instead of a general “server is broken” report.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Do this first |
|---|---|
| You are testing on the host computer | Stop the server, remove any placeholder, use 127.0.0.1 or localhost, then start after the recovery wait if applicable. |
| Players are on the same LAN | Use the host’s private LAN address and check the host firewall. |
| Players are outside the LAN | Use the externally reachable address, forward the required port, and allow it through the firewall. |
| The error began after a restart | Stop every instance, wait about five minutes, and start once. |
| A valid address and clean restart do not help | Ask the hosting provider to perform a stop/reset and verify the port and process state. |
