A Stirling-PDF hang or broken download is not automatically an out-of-memory error. First identify where the failure occurs: the container or host may run out of memory, a large-file pipeline may fail during processing, OCR may produce invalid output, or the backend may finish while the browser fails to retrieve the result. These 15 anti-patterns are troubleshooting checks, not a list of confirmed recurring defects; the incident reports cited below describe individual cases, not behavior guaranteed across versions.
Start by locating the failure
Before changing memory settings, determine what actually failed. A container exit or an explicit out-of-memory record points toward a resource boundary. A task that stalls or errors while handling a particular large input suggests investigating the processing path. An OCR warning that the generated file is invalid calls for a separate output-integrity check. A browser network error or HTTP 401 after backend processing calls for checking result delivery and authentication as well as the server log.

These boundaries matter because they lead to different fixes. Increasing a container limit will not necessarily fix an OCR-generated invalid PDF or a browser request rejected after processing. Conversely, a browser symptom does not prove the conversion failed.

| Image variant | Example memory limit in project documentation | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-Lite | 2G | Described as the minimal-size option for resource-constrained environments; available features differ by image. (Stirling-Tools getting-started guide and Docker Setup README, accessed 2026.) |
| Standard | 4G | The README lists this example limit; specific footprint or feature differences are not stated here. (Stirling-Tools Docker Setup README, accessed 2026.) |
| Fat | 6G | The README lists this example limit. The getting-started guide says this variant adds fonts and tools for broader conversion support. (Stirling-Tools getting-started guide and Docker Setup README, accessed 2026.) |
The project describes Stirling PDF as offering tools for signing, converting, merging, editing, OCR, and redaction, with self-hosted and desktop deployment options. That scope is not a performance or reliability measure. The documentation cited here does not establish a maximum PDF size, a RAM-per-page rule, or a best limit for every workload.
1. Treating an example limit as a universal requirement
The 2G, 4G, and 6G figures above are examples associated with image variants. Do not infer that every Ultra-Lite deployment needs 2G, that every standard deployment must have 4G, or that choosing a documented figure guarantees a conversion will succeed. Use them as configuration context, then investigate the actual failure and resource boundary.
2. Setting a container cap below the workload’s needs
A configured limit can constrain a container even when the host has more memory. If failures consistently occur under a particular workload, compare the container’s configured allowance with its observed resource use and the host’s available capacity. Raising a cap is relevant only if the container limit is the binding constraint; the project examples do not prescribe a universal adjustment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Assuming host RAM is the container’s available memory
Host capacity and a container’s allowance are not interchangeable. A large host does not, by itself, show that a particular container can use all of its memory. Check the effective container configuration and host pressure separately rather than diagnosing from the server’s installed RAM alone. This is general Docker troubleshooting guidance, not a Stirling-PDF-specific defect.
4. Changing the Java heap without checking the container boundary
Do not change a Java heap setting on the assumption that it is the sole memory control. The project materials cited here do not explain how every runtime or deployment setting interacts with the container limit. Establish which constraint is actually being reached before changing application-level memory settings; otherwise a change may leave the container boundary untouched or make the diagnosis less clear.

5. Choosing a heavier image on a constrained host without checking feature need
Compare the selected image with the tools the deployment needs. Ultra-Lite is documented as the minimal-size choice for constrained environments; the fat image adds fonts and tools for broader conversion support. Feature availability differs by image, so verify the required tools before switching. The documentation supplies no independent benchmark showing how much faster or more memory-efficient one variant is for a particular task.
Separate input and pipeline failures from general memory claims
When the failure follows one input or a watched-folder pipeline, isolate that path before treating it as a general service problem. A Stirling-PDF issue report from January 2026 describes an example PDF just over 2.6GB and an out-of-memory error while Files.readAllBytes was reading a large PDF. This is one reported incident, not a verified size threshold or a product-wide limit.

6. Retrying the same failing pipeline input without isolating it
If a pipeline repeatedly stalls or exits on the same file, pause repeated retries and test the input and processing path separately. Preserve the original, then try a smaller or otherwise controlled copy through the same operation if appropriate. This helps distinguish a workload-specific processing problem from a broader service or host issue; it does not establish that file size alone caused the failure.
7. Treating the reported 2.6GB file as a Stirling-PDF limit
The issue reporter described a file just over 2.6GB in an individual January 2026 report. The report does not establish that files below that size are safe, that files above it will fail, or that the project imposes that maximum. Do not use one report’s input size as a sizing rule.
Investigate OCR and output integrity as their own branch
When a result is reported as invalid, first determine whether the operation included OCR and whether the warning came from that stage. Keep an untouched copy of the input so you can compare results without confusing the source file with a generated output.

8. Treating an OCR invalid-output warning as proof of general PDF corruption
One Stirling-PDF issue log records the OCRmyPDF warning “The generated PDF is INVALID” during an OCR workflow; its trace includes Tesseract and Ghostscript. That report establishes an example of an OCR/output-integrity symptom, not a general rule that OCR dependencies always cause invalid PDFs or that every broken result has the same cause.
9. Changing OCR settings without checking whether OCR is in the failing path
Do not start by changing OCR language data or dependencies if the failed operation did not use OCR, or if the log gives no indication that OCR was reached. First reproduce the problem with the same input and operation, then compare an OCR run with an appropriate non-OCR operation where feasible. The cited issue does not identify a universal root cause or establish a general fix for other OCR failures.
10. Replacing the original instead of preserving input and output samples
Keep the source PDF and any generated result as separate files during diagnosis. Comparing them can establish whether the source was already problematic or whether the failure appears in the output path. This is a practical diagnostic precaution, not a claim that Stirling-PDF changes or damages every input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Distinguish service health from conversion and download health
The example Compose configuration in Stirling-PDF’s Docker documentation uses a health check against an application status endpoint. That can help show whether the service is available, but a passing status check does not verify every conversion, OCR run, or download.
11. Treating a healthy status endpoint as proof that conversions work
After confirming the service reports healthy, test the actual operation that fails and verify that the resulting file can be retrieved and opened. Service availability and end-to-end task success are different checks. The documented health check is an availability signal, not a conversion test.

12. Assuming a browser network error means backend processing failed
A v2.4.5 issue report describes backend processing completing successfully before the UI encountered network errors and HTTP 401 responses. This is version-specific incident evidence, not proof that every browser error follows successful processing. When the UI reports a failure, compare the application’s task log with the browser’s network or authentication symptom before rerunning a costly job.
13. Ignoring a 401 after a long-running operation
An HTTP 401 points to an authentication or authorization response at the request that received it; it does not, on its own, show whether the earlier conversion completed. Check which request failed and whether the backend logged a completed task. The v2.4.5 report is a single incident, so check the release-specific behavior of the version you run rather than applying an old workaround automatically.
Keep enough state to diagnose the next failure
The example Compose configuration mounts /configs and /logs. Persistent paths can retain configuration and logs across container recreation, making it easier to compare what changed and inspect a failure afterward. Keep sensitive material protected, and retain only the files and logs needed for diagnosis.
14. Discarding logs and configuration when recreating the container
If the deployment removes its configuration or logs whenever the container is replaced, you may lose useful evidence about the settings and events surrounding a failure. Review the Compose mounts and choose persistent storage where appropriate. The project example documents the paths; it does not require every deployment to use an identical storage layout.
15. Applying a version-specific workaround without checking the release you run
Issue reports describe particular versions and circumstances. Before carrying a workaround from an older report into a current deployment, check the version in use and the project’s current release notes or issue discussion. The v2.4.5 UI report does not establish that the same behavior persists in later releases, and the cited incident reports do not provide universal fixes.
A practical order for narrowing the cause
- Record the boundary. Note whether the container exits, the process stalls, an OCR stage reports invalid output, or only the browser request fails.
- Check the deployment. Identify the image variant, configured container allowance, host memory pressure, and any application-level memory settings without assuming one is the cause.
- Isolate the workload. Note whether the symptom follows one input, one operation, a watched-folder pipeline, or OCR specifically. Preserve the original and generated files.
- Compare server and browser evidence. Determine whether processing completed before a UI network error or 401, and whether the problem is tied to a particular release.
- Verify the outcome end to end. A healthy status check is useful, but confirm the actual task and retrieve and open its output.
The cited documentation and issue reports do not establish a universal RAM recommendation, maximum file size, or single cause for hangs and invalid PDFs. Treat the examples as diagnostic clues, then match the fix to the failure boundary you can observe.
