A navigation or network-idle wait is not the same as confirming that the fonts used in layout have finished loading.
Why a screenshot can miss the intended font
Web fonts load asynchronously. A capture taken during that interval may show blank space where text should be, or visible text in a fallback face. Google’s documentation notes that browsers can differ: Chrome may show blank space while a font is pending, whereas Firefox may display default-font text and rerender after the web font loads. These are documented behaviors, not guarantees for every browser version or configuration. Google Fonts: Technical Considerations
The browser exposes font-loading state through document.fonts, a FontFaceSet. Its ready promise fulfills after loading and layout operations for the document’s used fonts finish. It does not promise that every font declared in CSS has loaded: a face that the page has not used may not be part of the relevant work. MDN: Document.fonts
Wait for font readiness before capturing
First wait for the application’s own meaningful ready state—for example, the route content or component that contains the text. Then await the font set before calling the screenshot method.

Run the check again after changes
If application code later changes the route content, text, styles, or component state, wait for that change and evaluate document.fonts.ready again before capturing. The promise concerns fonts used by the current document and associated layout work; a later change can introduce a different used-font set.

Using another browser automation library
Use the same sequence in any tool that lets you evaluate JavaScript in the page: wait for the page’s relevant application state, evaluate document.fonts.ready, and only then invoke the screenshot operation. For example, Puppeteer exposes Page.screenshot(), while the font readiness check is a browser-page evaluation. Puppeteer: Page.screenshot()
Check which font actually failed
- Verify the normal page first. Open the target page in a browser and inspect the affected text’s computed
font-family. Confirm that the expected@font-facerule exists and matches the text’s weight and style. - Inspect font state in the page. Evaluate
document.fontsand inspect individual face statuses to see whether a needed face is loaded, errored, or still pending. - Check the resource request. Verify that the font file request succeeds and that the capture environment can reach the font host. A correct CSS family name cannot compensate for an unavailable resource.
- Consider explicit loading when appropriate. The CSS Font Loading API provides
FontFace.load()andFontFaceSet.load()to initiate loading when diagnostics indicate that a needed face has not been requested or resolved. Use these deliberately for the faces the page needs, rather than assuming that every declared face should be downloaded. MDN: CSS Font Loading API
Font-display helps visibility, not screenshot timing
CSS font-display values such as swap, optional, and fallback can let a system font appear while a custom face is pending. That may reduce invisible text during ordinary browsing, but it does not synchronize a screenshot with the intended custom font. If the visual requirement is specifically to capture the web font, still wait for font readiness and confirm the desired face loaded. Chrome for Developers: font-display guidance

Troubleshoot hangs and inconsistent results
- Text is still in a fallback font: Check the computed family, the matching face’s weight and style, and whether the font resource request succeeded. Make sure the screenshot wait occurs after the styles and page content that select that face are applied.
- Text is blank: The capture may be occurring during the browser’s font-loading interval. Await
document.fonts.readyafter the content is ready; check font request errors if it remains blank. - The promise stays pending: Record the browser engine and version, automation-library version, operating system, and each relevant font face’s status. Reproduce with a minimal page and compare versions before assigning the cause to your application or automation library.
- Only later captures fail: If a route transition or client-side render changes text or styling after the first readiness check, wait for that state and check font readiness again.
- Network idle did not fix it: Network-idle is not a substitute for the font set’s readiness promise. Use both only if each addresses a distinct need in your page’s workflow.
A Playwright issue opened September 29, 2026 and updated September 30 reports a case on Linux with Playwright 1.63.0 and bundled WebKit 26.6 in which document.fonts.ready remained pending and screenshot capture timed out. The report says a Playwright 1.60.0 control completed; intermediate versions had not been bisected and the responsible WebKit change was not identified. This is a specific issue report, not evidence that font readiness generally hangs or that a particular release caused it. Playwright issue #42986

No. It fulfills after loading and layout work for fonts used by the document; an unused declared face is not necessarily loaded.
