If it is one viewer, check that viewer’s connection, playback quality, app or browser, and device. If several viewers on different connections report the same interruption, investigate the stream reaching YouTube—especially the encoder and the broadcaster’s outbound connection. YouTube identifies widespread reports across different viewer connections as a possible encoder problem.
Start by locating where the buffering begins
Ask whether the problem affects one person, several people sharing a network, or viewers on unrelated connections. This is the most useful first distinction: a viewer’s download path is separate from the broadcaster’s upload path.
- One viewer: begin with that viewer’s network, playback quality, app or browser, and device.
- Several viewers on the same network: check that network and the playback devices, then ask whether viewers elsewhere see the same problem.
- Many viewers on different networks: the operator should inspect the encoder output, Live Control Room stream health, and outbound connection.
YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream guidance makes this distinction: reports from viewers on different internet connections can indicate an encoder issue.
If you are watching: troubleshoot playback
Change one thing at a time and retry the live stream so you can tell which part of the playback path is involved.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Try another connection and lower playback quality
- Switch to another available internet connection and replay the stream. If you are on Wi-Fi, test a different network when practical.
- Manually select a lower playback quality in the YouTube player. If buffering stops, the current connection or device may not be sustaining the selected quality.
YouTube’s computer troubleshooting page gives 7 Mbps as the minimum recommended connection speed for HD streaming. It is a general recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted live playback: congestion, latency, and device conditions can still matter. See Troubleshoot streaming & video issues – Computer.
Refresh the app, browser, and device
- In the YouTube app, clear its cache, reopen the app, and retry.
- Restart the app or device. Install available device system-software and browser updates.
- On a computer, update the browser, close excess tabs, and try again. YouTube lists Chrome as one troubleshooting option.
Check Wi-Fi conditions before buying equipment
If Wi-Fi seems weak, move closer to the router, reduce nearby interference, and pause competing network use if possible. Try these placement and usage checks before considering a router, mesh system, or cable; new hardware is not a universal fix for buffering.

If you run the study-room stream: inspect the broadcast
Use this sequence when multiple viewers on separate connections report buffering, or when you need to check the stream itself.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect stream health and timestamped error messages. YouTube’s See your live stream’s metrics – Computer explains where to review live metrics.
- Check the encoder preview or output. If the picture or sound is already degraded there, inspect source routing and encoder errors. Check CPU load and the local archive file, update the encoder software, then retest.
- If encoder output looks healthy, test outbound connectivity. Check the stability and strength of the broadcaster’s upload connection. If the test points to a connection problem, ask the ISP to investigate. A viewer’s download speed and the broadcaster’s outbound upload are different paths.
- Match output quality to a connection that can sustain it. Run a pre-stream test resembling the actual stream, then monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions gives general encoder guidance and bitrate recommendations. For context, its table lists 720p at 30 fps with a minimum video bitrate of 2 Mbps and a maximum of 6 Mbps. Those are encoder video-bitrate values, not a household internet-speed requirement.
- Check keyframe frequency. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its Live streaming error messages page says keyframes not being sent often enough can cause buffering. Confirm the encoder is actually sending them at the configured interval.
- Review latency settings. Lower latency reduces delay, but YouTube cautions: “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” A quiet study room without immediate audience interaction may not need the lowest latency. Test normal latency and compare stream health and viewer reports rather than assuming latency is the cause. See Manage live stream settings.
- Compare the local archive with the stream. Watch the archive, check the channel’s watch page, and test on a mobile device. If the archive is already impaired, troubleshoot the source or encoder; if only the delivered stream is affected, continue with stream-health and connection checks.
YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips – Computer describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable to test whether the player rolls over to a backup encoder. Treat that as a planned failover test—not something to do to a production stream during ordinary operation.

Choose a fix based on the evidence
| What you observe | Where to investigate first | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one viewer reports buffering | That viewer’s playback connection, quality, app or browser, and device | Try another connection and lower playback quality |
| Several viewers on one network report it | The shared network and playback devices | Ask a viewer on a different network to test the same stream |
| Viewers on unrelated networks report it | The encoder and the stream delivered to YouTube | Check Live Control Room health, encoder output, CPU, archive, and outbound connection |
| The local archive or encoder preview is also bad | Source routing, encoder errors, and computer load | Update the encoder and retest before changing network hardware |
| Encoder output looks healthy but viewers still see trouble | Outbound connection, stream settings, and playback conditions | Test outbound stability, quality settings, keyframes, and latency |
A wired Ethernet test is relevant only when the broadcaster’s outbound connection or Wi-Fi stability is suspect. YouTube’s live tips mention Ethernet in failover testing, but do not specify a cable category or promise that buying a cable will improve a stream. Test the connection first; consider a cable only if the diagnosis makes a wired connection a useful next step.
