1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the Indian rupee symbol (₹) appears as a box in a Puppeteer screenshot, first check that the browser runtime has a font containing that glyph and that the page can actually use it. The fullPage option controls how much of the page is captured; it does not install fonts or supply missing characters. The right fix depends on your operating system or container image and the page’s CSS.
Why Puppeteer shows the rupee symbol as a box
A box usually means the font selected for the character cannot render that glyph in the environment where Chromium is running. The cause may be a missing system font, a web font that failed to load, or a CSS font stack whose available fallbacks also lack the rupee symbol. This is the first diagnosis to check, not a guarantee that every box has the same cause.

Puppeteer describes fullPage as taking a screenshot of the full page when enabled. Its screenshot API describes capturing the page; neither makes full-page capture a font-installation or glyph-rendering setting. If the character is boxed in both viewport and full-page captures, focus on fonts and rendering inputs rather than capture extent. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions · Puppeteer Page screenshot API

Diagnose the font in the failing runtime
- Confirm the content. Verify that the page contains the intended character, ₹, rather than a substituted character or corrupted text.
- Inspect the affected element’s computed font. Check the font-family applied to the rupee symbol and the element’s surrounding text. A declared family is only a preference; the browser needs an available font that contains the glyph.
- Check the actual browser environment. In Linux or a container, inspect the deployed image’s installed fonts and choose a font package appropriate to that distribution. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide includes environment-specific font examples, but those examples are not a universal prescription for the rupee glyph. Puppeteer troubleshooting
- If the page uses a web font, check its request and load result. Confirm the font file was fetched successfully and that the page’s CSS can select it. A failed request or an unsuitable font can leave the browser relying on a fallback that lacks ₹.
- Wait for font loading before capture. Await
document.fonts.readyin the page before taking the screenshot. This is a readiness step, not a way to install a missing system font. Puppeteer.guide notes thatdocument.fonts.readydoes not guarantee the preferred font is installed. Puppeteer.guide: Puppeteer screenshots
Use a focused test to isolate the cause
Render a small page or test element containing ₹ with the same CSS, browser runtime, and output path as the failing capture. Compare these conditions:
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Viewport versus full page: if both show boxes, page extent is unlikely to be the differentiator.
- Local versus deployed runtime: if the local capture works but the deployed one fails, compare their font inventories and browser environments.
- Web font versus fallback: confirm whether the requested web font loads and whether the fallback can render ₹.
These comparisons help narrow the cause; they are diagnostic checks, not a guarantee of a particular result. Validate the final screenshot in the same runtime and image path where the issue occurs.
Wait for fonts, then capture the full page
For example, in a Node.js script using Puppeteer, wait for the page’s font-loading work before capturing. Set the page URL and viewport to match your own case:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This waits for font loading work after navigation. It cannot make an unavailable font or glyph available. If your deployment uses Linux or a container, install an appropriate font in that environment, then rebuild or restart it so the browser sees the updated font inventory. The package and rebuild steps vary by distribution and image; there is no one package command that fits every setup. Puppeteer troubleshooting

- The symbol remains boxed after waiting for
document.fonts.ready: check whether the preferred font is installed and whether the selected fallback includes ₹. Waiting cannot add a font to the runtime. - It works locally but not in the deployed capture: compare the local and deployed font inventories, CSS, browser runtime, and web-font requests. Apply the appropriate font change to the deployed image, then rebuild or restart it.
- The web font appears in CSS but not in the screenshot: inspect the font request for a failed load and confirm that the affected element’s computed font stack can use that font or a suitable fallback.
- Only the full-page capture seems affected: capture the same glyph in viewport and full-page modes using the same runtime and styling. Since
fullPagechanges capture scope, a difference is a reason to compare the rendered page and capture conditions, not evidence that the option installs or removes glyphs. - You do not know which font package to install: identify the operating system or container distribution and select a package that provides a font with the required glyph. The right package cannot be specified without knowing that environment.
