If your OBS YouTube stream drops when you switch from a mobile hotspot to broadband, first set OBS to use the default network interface, then check the upload capacity of both connections and rehearse the handoff in an unlisted stream. A manual network binding or a connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate may contribute, but changing networks does not guarantee that one OBS session will continue seamlessly.
Start with OBS’s network binding
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Set Bind to IP to Default. OBS recommends this setting when troubleshooting connection problems. If it was manually set to an address associated with the hotspot, changing networks may leave OBS bound to an unsuitable interface; treat that as a possibility to check, not a diagnosis that applies to every drop. - Apply the setting, then inspect OBS’s connection status and dropped-frame counter during a test. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server; the counter does not by itself identify which link or device is at fault.
Your YouTube stream key and server URL identify and direct the stream to its destination. They do not choose the computer’s active network interface, so resetting the key is not a sensible first step when the problem begins with a network change. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Check upload capacity on both connections
Test upload speed on the hotspot and broadband connection under conditions close to your broadcast. Download speed is not a substitute: YouTube notes that upload is often slower, and other people or devices using the connection can reduce the capacity available to OBS. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Its guidance is general, not an India-specific measurement; actual results depend on your carrier, ISP, location and network conditions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

If you may need to stream over either connection, test both and choose a conservative bitrate that the weaker reliable path can carry, with headroom. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point, while YouTube publishes codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations. These are separate guidelines, not a guarantee during a network handoff. Lowering bitrate can reduce quality; it cannot restore a connection that has actually gone down.

These are YouTube encoder guidance values, not evidence that either of your connections can sustain them. Compare them with your measured stable upload and keep YouTube’s recommended headroom in mind. Consult OBS’s bitrate guidance and YouTube’s encoder settings for your codec and output settings.
Use OBS congestion options as mitigations
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and consider enabling Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS says this can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but warns that it does not fix the underlying network problem and may lower image quality.

OBS also lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows-only options that some users report finding helpful. If you test them, change one setting at a time and compare results in a rehearsal; neither is a guaranteed fix for switching between hotspot and broadband. See OBS’s troubleshooting guide.
Rehearse the exact handoff before an important broadcast
- Schedule or start an unlisted YouTube test and use representative audio, movement and scene changes. YouTube recommends testing with realistic content before going live.
- Check the preview and stream health messages in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor audio and video quality throughout the test. YouTube’s guidance is at encoder settings and live streaming tips.
- Record OBS’s dropped-frame counter and note what happens when you change from hotspot to broadband. Test the reverse transition too if you expect to use it. A YouTube preview that looks healthy before the handoff does not establish that the transition itself will work.
- For a critical event, make a local recording and consider a separately configured backup encoder. YouTube describes testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable when a backup encoder is configured; that is a different arrangement from one OBS session changing networks. Do not assume unplugging a cable or changing routes will preserve the same session.
If it still disconnects, check the surrounding network setup
- VPN or security software: Test whether a VPN or security product is interfering with the connection. Change settings cautiously and restore protections after testing.
- Network-prioritization or optimization utilities: Review these utilities as possible contributors, especially if the problem began after installing or changing one.
- Drivers and Wi-Fi: Update network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. If the broadband leg uses Wi-Fi, test a wired connection to the router where practical.
- Router, modem or network equipment: Check for unstable equipment or local congestion. If OBS’s diagnostics do not resolve the issue, OBS recommends contacting your ISP; a routing or congestion problem may be outside your computer.
An Ethernet cable can make the broadband leg more stable if your computer and router have compatible ports; an adapter may be needed. It cannot guarantee a seamless switch from hotspot to broadband.
