If a CAPTCHA area is blank in a Node.js Puppeteer screenshot, there is no universal flag or wait time that fixes it. page.screenshot() captures the page; it does not prove a third-party CAPTCHA has loaded and painted. First determine whether the CAPTCHA iframe exists, whether its requests succeeded, and whether the widget is ready inside that frame. Use an authorized test or staging flow, and do not automate a real payment or try to defeat the CAPTCHA.
Why is my Puppeteer screenshot showing a blank CAPTCHA?
The cause for a particular Indian payment page cannot be identified without its provider, CAPTCHA type, browser version, environment, URL, and logs. Common diagnostic branches include a CAPTCHA frame that never attached, a blocked or failed script, an unsupported browser environment, an integration issue, or a frame that exists but has not rendered its visible content when the screenshot is taken.

Reproduce only in the payment provider’s documented test or staging flow, or with an authorized test account. Before changing launch options, record the sanitized page URL, UTC time, Puppeteer and Chromium versions, operating system or container, headless mode, viewport, launch arguments, and whether the same authorized flow renders in a supported interactive browser.

Attach diagnostic listeners before navigation so that early network activity is not missed. This example logs URLs and statuses; review it before use and do not log credentials, card data, OTPs, cookies, customer data, or CAPTCHA tokens. Confirm event signatures against the Puppeteer version installed in your project.

How do I wait for a CAPTCHA iframe before taking a screenshot?
A page-level selector wait runs in the main page context. If the widget is in an iframe, identify that frame and wait for a documented, permitted readiness condition within it. Inspect page.frames() or page.mainFrame().childFrames(); frame methods execute in the frame’s context.

Frame-scoped wait for an authorized test page
Replace the illustrative host match and selector below with values documented for the actual integration and permitted for your test. Neither a universal CAPTCHA host pattern nor a universal widget selector exists.

Why a fixed delay is a weak fix
A sleep may make a race disappear intermittently without establishing what was slow or whether the widget is ready. Puppeteer’s Page.waitForSelector can wait for a selector in the main page, while frame-scoped methods target iframe content. Choose a wait condition tied to the integration’s documented ready state rather than assuming a delay guarantees rendering.

How to interpret what you find
- No expected frame, with a failed request or script error: use the failed request URL and error, response status, and console output to investigate network restrictions, provider policy, or a site integration problem.
- No expected frame and no obvious failure: check redirects, browser support requirements, JavaScript errors, and whether the provider allows the automation environment. Ask the payment provider about its test-environment policy.
- Frame attached, expected content absent: wait on an authorized observable condition inside that frame. Preserve its URL and relevant errors for escalation.
- Renders interactively but not in automation: compare the supported browser version and runtime environment. Do not assume stealth plugins, site-isolation changes, or disabling browser security are appropriate fixes.
- Element exists but region looks blank: check whether the relevant visible region has dimensions, is hidden, or is covered. Compare a capture taken after a frame-specific readiness signal; the exact CSS or rendering diagnosis depends on the page.
Check Puppeteer and Chromium compatibility without weakening security
Compare the installed Puppeteer and browser versions with Puppeteer’s current support guidance, and check for missing Linux libraries if Chromium fails or behaves differently in a container. Puppeteer API pages identify versions around 25.10.0–25.12.0 in the consulted materials; that is not a statement about your installed version. Use the troubleshooting guide for the version you run: Puppeteer troubleshooting.
Keep Chrome’s sandbox enabled and correctly configured. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting material strongly discourages running Chrome without its sandbox; --no-sandbox is not a generic remedy for a missing CAPTCHA.
Escalate with a sanitized reproduction
If evidence points to the page integration or provider behavior, send the payment or CAPTCHA provider a concise reproduction from its authorized test flow. Include:

- Sanitized test or staging URL and UTC timestamp.
- Region or network information where disclosure is permitted.
- Puppeteer and browser versions, operating environment, headless mode, viewport, and relevant launch options.
- Navigation status, current frame URLs, relevant failed request URLs and statuses, and console errors.
- Whether the same flow renders in a supported interactive browser.
Ask whether automated browser rendering is supported and whether a documented sandbox or test integration is available. Do not send payment secrets, customer data, session cookies, OTPs, or CAPTCHA response tokens.
Indian payment rules do not explain a blank screenshot
India’s RBI Authentication mechanisms for digital payment transactions Directions, 2025 address authentication for digital payment transactions. A reviewed copy says applicable payment-system providers and participants must comply by April 1, 2026, and discusses a two-factor authentication norm and permitted mechanisms. It does not establish that CAPTCHA is a required authentication factor or explain why a widget appears blank in a screenshot. The cited copy is hosted on a third-party mirror, so check the current primary RBI publication and applicability before relying on regulatory details: reviewed copy of the RBI Directions.

Does a blank CAPTCHA screenshot prove that CAPTCHA failed?
No. A screenshot alone cannot distinguish a missing frame, a load or render delay, or an integration or environment issue; inspect the frame tree and diagnostic logs.
Can Puppeteer solve or bypass the CAPTCHA as part of this fix?
No. Use an authorized test flow and provider-supported test integration; the workflow here is for diagnosing rendering, not defeating a challenge.
