Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When MySQL reports “Access denied,” use the error’s user, host, and password details to find the mismatch before changing credentials. First confirm which local MySQL server your client reaches, then check whether the connection uses a socket or TCP/IP and whether the attempted MySQL account is allowed from that host.
Read the full error before changing anything
Record the complete message, especially the attempted MySQL user, host, and whether a password was supplied. For example, using password: NO means the client did not send one; it does not mean MySQL rejected a password you entered. The user and host describe the login MySQL tried to match, which may differ from what you expected.
Also distinguish an authentication rejection from a connection failure. A stopped server, an unreachable socket, or a wrong port needs an endpoint or service fix, not a password reset. MySQL’s connection troubleshooting guide describes the information in access-denied messages and recommends checking the server and connection parameters.
Confirm which MySQL server your client reaches
macOS development machines may have more than one MySQL installation, such as an installer copy and a Homebrew-managed copy. They can live in different locations and may both try to use the same port. A successful change to one server will not fix a login against the other.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check whether the intended server is running and identify how it was started.
- Compare the application’s configured socket or port with the endpoint that server uses.
- If an unintended instance is running, stop it through the service mechanism for that installation before changing accounts. The official MySQL macOS installation notes include a Homebrew stop-command example, but the applicable command depends on the installation and formula.
Do not assume a particular service command applies to every macOS MySQL setup. Identify the installation first; otherwise you may stop or modify the wrong instance.
Test the connection method your application uses
On the command line, localhost normally uses a Unix socket. Using 127.0.0.1 explicitly selects TCP/IP. These are different connection paths, and MySQL can match them to different account host entries. Test the same path the application uses rather than treating the two names as interchangeable.

- Check the application’s host, socket, and port settings.
- Try an explicit socket connection if the application uses
localhost, or an explicit TCP/IP connection if it uses127.0.0.1. - If one works and the other fails, investigate the selected endpoint and the account’s allowed host rather than assuming the password itself is wrong.
MySQL documents that connections to localhost use a local Unix socket unless connection parameters ensure TCP/IP. A hostname used for TCP/IP must also be represented by an applicable host entry for the account. See the MySQL connection troubleshooting guide.
Match the MySQL account, not your macOS login
A MySQL account combines a user name with one or more permitted client hosts. Your macOS account name and password do not automatically become your MySQL identity or credentials. An error such as 'root'@'localhost' identifies the MySQL user and client host involved in that attempt; it does not prove that the macOS root account is involved.

Use the error’s user and host to inspect the intended MySQL account and its host permissions. For routine development connections, use a dedicated application account with only the privileges the application needs rather than relying on MySQL’s root account. MySQL explains the account user-and-host model in Account User Names and Passwords.
Change a password only after confirming the target
If you can connect as an administrator and have established that the password is wrong, change the password for the precise MySQL account and host. For example, the statement’s target should take the form 'app_user'@'localhost' only if that is the account you intend to change:

ALTER USER 'app_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'new_password';
This is an example, not a command to copy with the sample account name. Substitute the verified account and host, and use a password appropriate for your environment. The connected administrator needs account-management privileges to change it. See MySQL’s password assignment guidance.

Confirm the active server before running the statement. Otherwise, the command may successfully change an account on a different local MySQL installation and leave the application’s failure untouched.

If the client reports an unsupported authentication protocol or plugin, check the actual server and client versions and the plugin configured for the account. Do not change authentication plugins just because a login failed; first establish that the error is about protocol compatibility rather than an incorrect account, host, endpoint, or password.
The MySQL 8.0 Secure Deployment Guide says caching_sha2_password is the default authentication plugin in MySQL 8.0, while mysql_native_password was the default in MySQL 5.7. That version-specific history does not establish which plugin your local account uses. Verify the versions and consult the current compatibility documentation before changing configuration: Enabling Authentication.
Quick Recap
Use this order to narrow the cause
- Read the exact error: note its user, host, password-supplied status, and whether it is an authentication or connection error.
- Identify the server: confirm the running installation and its socket or port.
- Match the path: test the socket or TCP/IP method the application actually uses.
- Check the account: verify the MySQL user and permitted host; do not substitute your macOS identity.
- Make a narrow change: change a password or authentication setting only when the error and confirmed account justify it.
