If Instagram’s camera is black, unavailable, crashing, refusing permission, or recording silent video on an iPhone or iPad, work through these 12 checks in order. First test Apple’s built-in Camera app: if it works, concentrate on Instagram permissions and app software; if it fails too, troubleshoot the device camera before reinstalling Instagram. Test Instagram after each relevant change so you can stop as soon as the problem is resolved.

Start by identifying the exact failure

Different symptoms point to different controls. Note what happens when you open the Instagram camera:

What you see Most useful first checks
Instagram asks for camera access, or the camera option is missing Camera permission, then Screen Time restrictions
The preview is black or freezes Permission, app restart, device restart, updates, and a built-in Camera test
The app closes when you open Stories or Reels Close and reopen, restart, update, then reinstall only if necessary
You can choose existing photos but cannot take a new one Camera permission and restrictions; photo-library access is a separate control
Video records without sound Microphone permission and Screen Time microphone restrictions
Images are blurry in every app Remove obstructions and clean the lens; this is not an Instagram permission fix

Instagram’s current App Store listing states a minimum of iOS 16.3 on iPhone and iPadOS 16.3 on iPad. That requirement can change, so check the live listing on the device before treating an older operating system as compatible.

12 fixes, in the order to try them

1. Check whether the problem is Instagram or the iPhone/iPad camera

Open Apple’s Camera app and take a photo with the rear camera. Switch to the front camera and test that one as well. Try recording a short video and play it back. This comparison separates an Instagram-specific failure from a hardware, system, or obstruction problem.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Blue - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
  • If both cameras work in Apple’s app, continue with the Instagram-focused steps below.
  • If one or both cameras fail there too, use the device-camera checks in steps 9 and 10 before blaming Instagram.
  • If the Camera app works but Instagram alone is silent, include the microphone permission check in step 3.

Apple specifically recommends testing both the front and rear cameras when diagnosing camera trouble.

2. Allow Instagram to use the camera

iOS and iPadOS require an app to request permission before using the camera. Apple describes the requirement this way: “Before apps use the camera or microphone on your iPhone, they’re required to request your permission and explain why they’re asking.”

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Camera.
  4. Find Instagram and turn its switch on.

Return to Instagram and open the camera again. If Instagram is not listed, do not assume the app has permission: continue to step 4 and check whether a restriction is preventing the request or the privacy setting from appearing. Camera access and photo-library access are different permissions, so allowing Photos alone does not enable the live camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Allow microphone access for silent videos

A video can have a normal picture but no sound when microphone access is disabled. The microphone control is separate from camera access.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  2. Turn on Instagram if it appears.
  3. Record a brief Instagram video and play it back with the device volume raised.

If Instagram does not appear in the list, or the switch is dimmed, check Screen Time restrictions next. If audio is missing in Apple’s Camera app as well, test without connected Bluetooth audio devices and continue with system troubleshooting rather than changing Instagram alone.

4. Check Screen Time restrictions when permissions are missing or locked

Screen Time can prevent apps from requesting access or stop you from changing privacy settings. This is a possible cause when Instagram is absent from the Camera or Microphone list, when a switch cannot be changed, or when a child or managed-device setup controls the settings.

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Review the privacy controls for camera-related hardware, microphone access, and photo access.
  4. Also check whether changes to privacy settings are locked by the family organizer or device administrator.

The exact labels and available controls vary by iOS or iPadOS version and by family configuration. If someone else manages Screen Time, that person may need to enter the Screen Time passcode or approve the change. After a restriction is removed, reopen Instagram and respond to its permission prompt.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

5. Close and reopen Instagram

An app that has been left suspended can retain a failed camera session. Close it completely, then launch a fresh session.

  1. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause; on an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button. On an iPad, use the app switcher gesture or the Home button, depending on the model.
  2. Find Instagram in the app switcher.
  3. Swipe Instagram off the screen to close it.
  4. Wait a few seconds, then open Instagram and test Stories, Reels, or the in-app camera.

Force-closing is a short reset, not a substitute for permission approval. If the same failure returns immediately, proceed to a full device restart.

6. Restart the iPhone or iPad

Restarting reloads iOS or iPadOS services that an app uses to access the camera and microphone. Use the normal power-off and power-on procedure for your model. If the screen is unresponsive, use Apple’s model-specific force-restart button sequence.

After the device starts, open Apple’s Camera app once, then Instagram. Testing the native app first confirms whether the camera service came back before you evaluate Instagram. A restart does not erase photos, messages, or Instagram account data.

7. Update Instagram from the App Store

Compatibility problems can remain after a permission change if the installed Instagram build is old or corrupted. Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and look for Instagram in the available updates. Install the update if one is offered, then test the same Instagram feature that failed.

Do not assume a particular release fixes this camera problem unless Instagram’s own release notes say so. If no update is available, continue with the operating-system check rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same build.

8. Update iOS or iPadOS

Apple’s general app guidance says to update device software when an app is not working and no app update resolves it. Go to Settings > General > Software Update, review the offered version, and install it when practical. Keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi during a major update.

  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

Updating can also be necessary to meet Instagram’s current compatibility requirement. The App Store listing currently identifies iOS 16.3 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 16.3 or later for iPad, but the minimum is subject to change. If the device cannot install a supported version, Instagram may not function reliably even when permissions are correct.

9. Re-test both cameras in Apple’s Camera app

If you have not done so already, test the front and rear cameras after the restart and updates. Switch between them using the camera-switch button, take still images, and record video. Look for a black preview, repeated focus failure, a crash, or a flash that does not fire.

When Apple’s Camera app works normally while Instagram remains broken, the evidence points toward Instagram’s permission state or app behavior. Keep your account signed in and continue to step 11 only after the permission and update checks are complete. When Apple’s Camera app also fails, treat the issue as a device-camera problem and follow the physical checks below.

10. Remove cases, films, and accessories that may obstruct the lens

Temporarily remove a phone case, camera protector, magnetic mount, lens cover, or film that sits over or near either camera. Some accessories leave the lens partly blocked, create glare, or interfere with the flash. Test the front and rear cameras again with the device bare.

For blurry images, gently wipe the camera glass with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Cleaning is relevant to smears and blur; it cannot restore a missing permission, unlock a Screen Time setting, or repair a software crash. Do not spray liquid directly onto the device or press grit across the lens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Reinstall Instagram only after the safer app steps fail

Deleting and redownloading an unresponsive app is an escalation, not the first fix. Before deleting Instagram, preserve anything stored only on the device, including unsent work or drafts you cannot recreate. Do not assume locally stored content will return after reinstalling.

  1. Confirm that you know the account login details and can complete any two-factor authentication challenge.
  2. Save or publish any content you need to keep, where Instagram’s features allow it.
  3. Delete Instagram using the iPhone or iPad’s app menu.
  4. Redownload it from the App Store, sign in, and grant Camera and Microphone permissions when prompted.
  5. Test the same camera mode that previously failed.

A reinstall replaces the app’s local files but does not repair a defective device camera or a Screen Time policy. If the newly installed app still fails while Apple’s Camera app works, use the app developer’s official support route.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.

12. Escalate according to the test result

Choose the support path that matches the evidence rather than sending the same report to every service.

  • Only Instagram fails: Record the iPhone or iPad model, iOS or iPadOS version, Instagram version, affected feature (camera, Stories, Reels, or video audio), and the steps already tried. Contact Instagram through its official in-app or account support route.
  • Apple’s Camera app also fails: If both cameras or the flash remain faulty after removing obstructions, restarting, and updating, arrange Apple or an authorized service evaluation.
  • Permission controls are unavailable: Ask the Screen Time organizer or device administrator to review the restriction; support cannot override a policy you do not control.

Do not claim a confirmed Instagram outage or bug unless an official status notice or release note identifies one. The diagnostic split between the native Camera app and Instagram is more useful than guessing at an undocumented cause.

What each result tells you

Test result Likely direction Next action
Front and rear cameras work in Apple’s Camera app; Instagram has no camera access Permission, Screen Time, or Instagram state Recheck steps 2–4, then close, update, and reinstall only if needed
Apple’s Camera app works; Instagram preview is black after permission and updates Instagram-specific app behavior Reopen, restart, reinstall, then contact Instagram support
Apple’s Camera app is black or crashes too Device camera, obstruction, or system fault Remove accessories, clean only for blur, update, and seek service if persistent
Picture works but Instagram video has no sound Microphone permission or restriction Check Microphone settings and Screen Time controls
Instagram can select existing photos but cannot capture new media Camera permission is separate from Photos permission Enable Camera access and retest

Symptom-specific checks that prevent wasted steps

If Instagram can browse your existing library but the live view is unavailable, do not keep changing Photos access. The photo-library control governs selection of media already stored on the device; the Camera control governs taking a new picture or video. Check both only when the symptom calls for both.

For a black preview, confirm the permission switch first, then close Instagram and restart the device before reinstalling. A black screen in both Instagram and Apple’s Camera app is a different situation from a black screen only in Instagram. Testing front and rear cameras matters because an obstruction or failure can affect one module but not the other.

For a crash limited to Stories or Reels, record which mode fails and whether the regular camera works. Updating the app and operating system is more appropriate than repeatedly changing microphone settings unless the crash also involves missing audio. If the app closes after every launch even with permissions enabled, preserve local drafts before considering deletion.

For silent video, play the test recording back in the Photos app with the volume turned up. If sound is absent only from Instagram, review Microphone permission and Screen Time. If recordings made with Apple’s Camera app are also silent, investigate the device’s audio route and system behavior rather than assuming Instagram is the cause.

Before contacting support

A concise report helps the correct team reproduce the problem. Write down the exact model, iOS or iPadOS version, Instagram version, affected mode, whether the front or rear camera is involved, and whether Apple’s Camera app works. Include whether the permission switch is present, enabled, disabled, or locked. Mention any case or camera protector you removed and whether restarting or updating changed the symptom.

Avoid reporting an undocumented cause as fact. Say what you observed—for example, “Apple’s Camera app works, but Instagram’s Stories preview stays black after Camera permission is enabled”—rather than calling it a hardware defect or confirmed Instagram bug. If a Screen Time organizer or administrator controls the device, that person may need to make the privacy change before an app support agent can help.

Important limits and safety notes

  • Camera and microphone permissions are independent. Enabling one does not enable the other.
  • Screen Time controls differ by OS version, family role, and managed-device policy; a missing switch is not proof of a hardware defect.
  • A microfibre cloth addresses a dirty lens and blurry image, not black app previews caused by permissions or software.
  • Deleting Instagram can remove locally stored app data. Protect drafts and other device-only content first.
  • Instagram’s minimum supported operating system is a live App Store requirement and may be different when you read this article.
  • Do not spray cleaner directly on the lens or force a stuck privacy switch. Use a dry microfibre cloth only for exterior smudges and let the device administrator handle locked settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Instagram’s camera black on my iPhone but normal in the Camera app?

That pattern points first to Instagram’s permission state or app behavior, not automatically to a failed camera. Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera, close and reopen Instagram, restart the device, and install available app and iOS updates. If the preview remains black, reinstall only after protecting local drafts, then contact Instagram support.

Why is Instagram missing from the Camera permission list?

A Screen Time or managed-device restriction may be preventing Instagram from requesting access or preventing privacy settings from being changed. Review Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and ask the organizer or administrator to unlock the applicable camera, microphone, or photo controls. Labels vary by iOS and iPadOS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Photos permission replace Camera permission for Instagram?

No. Photos access lets Instagram select existing media, while Camera access lets it capture new photos and video. If you can choose library images but cannot take a new picture, enable Instagram under Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and test again.

Why does my Instagram video have no sound?

Camera and microphone permissions are separate. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and allow Instagram if it appears, then record a short test and play it back with the volume raised. If the switch is missing or locked, check Screen Time. If Apple’s Camera recordings are also silent, investigate system audio behavior.

Should I clean my iPhone or iPad lens to fix Instagram?

Clean the lens only when images are blurry or smeared. Apple recommends a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Cleaning cannot restore camera permission, bypass Screen Time, or fix an app crash. Remove cases, films, lens covers, or accessories that may obstruct either camera before testing again.

Will deleting Instagram erase my drafts?

It may remove locally stored app data, so do not assume drafts or unsent work will return after reinstalling. Save or publish anything you need where Instagram allows it, confirm your login and two-factor authentication access, then delete and redownload only after closing, restarting, and updating have failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Apple’s Camera app also fails?

Test both the front and rear cameras, remove cases or camera accessories, restart, and update iOS or iPadOS. If the native Camera app or flash remains black, crashes, or fails after those checks, arrange an Apple or authorized service evaluation rather than repeatedly reinstalling Instagram.

What operating-system version does Instagram require?

The live App Store listing currently states iOS 16.3 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 16.3 or later for iPad. Requirements can change, so check Instagram’s current listing on the device. An older device that cannot install a supported system may not function reliably even with correct permissions.

The Bottom Line

Start with the built-in Camera app, then check Camera and Microphone permissions and Screen Time restrictions. Close and reopen Instagram, restart, update both apps and the operating system, and reinstall only after protecting local content. If Apple’s Camera app also fails, remove obstructions and seek device service; if only Instagram fails, use Instagram’s official support route.
