1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf HDR looks worse than SDR, first confirm the TV and source are actually playing HDR, then choose a picture mode meant for HDR and check tone mapping. A darker picture can be intentional in an accuracy-focused mode; a bright, faded image can point to the wrong mode or a signal-setting problem. There is no single set of picture values that works for every TV, input, and source.
First, identify what looks wrong
HDR and SDR are different video signal formats. HDR can carry a wider range of brightness and color, but that capability does not guarantee that every TV, scene, or picture preset will look better to you. Sony describes the difference between HDR and SDR as a wider range of brightness and colour in HDR.

- HDR is too dark: check the selected picture mode and tone-mapping option before raising brightness controls.
- HDR looks bright and faded: check that the TV is using an HDR picture mode intended for the signal. Sony gives HDR-Video mode as guidance for the supported models covered by its instructions.
- SDR looks wrong while HDR is enabled: the TV may be receiving HDR while displaying SDR content, or the source may be converting SDR for an HDR output. Check the source and TV signal information where available.
Verify the title, app, and playback device are delivering HDR, rather than assuming a streaming service or connected device is doing so. The format can depend on the whole playback chain, and a link in that chain may not deliver the expected HDR signal. LG’s HDR overview explains the format and playback chain.

Choose a picture mode for the signal
Once HDR reception is confirmed, select a picture mode intended for HDR video. Menu names and availability vary by brand and model. On supported Sony TVs, Sony advises choosing HDR-Video when HDR content looks bright and faded; this is not a universal menu instruction for other TVs. See Sony’s model-specific guidance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare a reference-oriented option, such as Filmmaker or a movie mode, with a brighter Standard or Dynamic preset using the same scene. A reference-oriented mode may look darker because it aims for a different presentation; a brighter preset may increase perceived brightness but change color and detail. Neither mode is automatically the right choice for every viewer. Samsung notes that Filmmaker Mode may appear darker and that picture controls vary by model. Samsung’s picture-settings guide describes its controls.
- Look for shadow detail without crushing dark areas into black.
- Check whether bright areas retain visible detail rather than becoming featureless white.
- Judge whether skin tones and other colors look natural, not merely vivid.
Check HDR tone mapping
Tone mapping is how a TV adjusts HDR brightness and gradation to suit its display. Sony defines its HDR tone-mapping controls in terms of adjusting brightness and gradation based on the HDR content’s luminance. Sony’s picture-settings explanation describes this function.

Available controls and labels differ between TVs. Where your set offers tone-mapping choices, compare them with the same HDR scene and pay attention to highlight detail, overall brightness, and smooth gradation. A brighter-looking choice is not necessarily better if it removes detail; a choice that preserves more gradation may look less bright. Avoid copying numerical values from another model: the right adjustment depends on the TV and the signal.
If HDR comes from a Windows PC
PC playback adds two checks: the TV’s HDMI input configuration and Windows’ HDR settings. Samsung calls its enhanced input control “Input Signal Plus” on supported TVs. The exact path and whether the setting is required depend on the model and input. Samsung’s PC-connection troubleshooting guide covers the input setting and Windows HD Color.

- Enable the TV’s enhanced input setting if required. In the TV’s input or external-device settings, select the HDMI port used by the PC and turn on the model’s enhanced-signal option, such as Input Signal Plus. Menu labels vary.
- Check Windows HDR. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR and confirm HDR is enabled for the display you are using.
- Adjust SDR brightness for SDR content. On the HDR settings page, use the SDR content brightness control if SDR apps or desktop content look wrong while HDR is on. This adjusts SDR content within the HDR display setup; it is not a universal HDR brightness setting. Microsoft explains the Windows HDR controls.
- Restart an affected app. Microsoft notes that some apps need to be restarted after changing HDR settings before the change takes effect.
If the picture still seems wrong, check the TV’s signal information and the PC’s display output again. A PC connection can behave differently from playback through the TV’s own apps, so do not assume that one working HDR path proves every input is configured the same way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to reset picture settings
Reset picture settings only if previous adjustments have left the image obviously wrong and you cannot identify which control caused it. A reset removes user changes, so expect to configure your preferred settings again. Before resetting, note the current values or try restoring only the affected picture mode if the TV offers that option.
