When FFmpeg keeps disconnecting from YouTube Live, first identify whether the failure is at startup or after a stream is established. Then check the stream URL and key, RTMP or RTMPS settings, FFmpeg’s local output, and outbound connectivity—in that order. A reconnect flag is not a universal fix: the right response depends on your FFmpeg build, command, protocol, and the exact error.
1. Capture the failure before changing settings
Save the complete FFmpeg command and the log lines immediately before, during, and after the disconnect. Also note whether FFmpeg is sending the live stream to YouTube or reading another source. These are different connection directions, and the word “reconnect” alone does not identify which connection needs attention.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build information.
- Note whether FFmpeg fails before publishing begins or disconnects after the stream has been running.
- Copy the exact error text and its timestamp, along with the RTMP or RTMPS destination format.
- Redact the stream key before sharing a command or log. Treat the key as a password.
Do not paste a live stream key into a public forum, issue tracker, or support request. If a key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live settings and update the encoder.
2. Verify the YouTube stream URL and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the current server URL and stream key, then compare them with FFmpeg’s output destination. A startup or authentication failure is a different problem from a stream that connected successfully and later dropped. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends obtaining a new stream key and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder reports a startup error.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the server URL shown for that stream and use it as the destination in FFmpeg.
- Copy the matching stream key into the command or configuration. Avoid adding spaces or line breaks.
- If the key may be incorrect or exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings, update FFmpeg, and try again.
Do not assume that a key from another stream, an old saved configuration, or a remembered destination is still the correct one. Keep the key private when collecting diagnostic information.
3. Check RTMP versus RTMPS and TLS errors
Use the exact RTMP or RTMPS server URL provided in Live Control Room. Changing a URL’s protocol by assumption is not a reliable way to switch transports. If you are using RTMPS, YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says to verify the server URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.

- SSL or certificate error: Recheck the RTMPS URL. YouTube advises specifying port 443 where applicable.
- Connection timeout: Verify the URL and check that your FFmpeg build and chosen output path support RTMPS.
- Unclear protocol error: Compare the destination with the one shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing at a port or changing only the protocol label.
A TLS or connection timeout is evidence about establishing the transport connection; it does not, by itself, prove that the stream key or encoded video is wrong.
4. Separate a bad local stream from a network drop
Check what FFmpeg is producing before treating every interruption as an internet problem. YouTube recommends checking encoder software, source routing, local audio and video, CPU load, dashboard errors, and a local archive if one is available. If viewers on different connections report the same problem, YouTube says the encoder may be responsible.

Inspect FFmpeg and the source
- Check the log for encoder errors, failed inputs, missing audio or video, and errors that appear just before the disconnect.
- Confirm the intended audio and video inputs are still available and routed to the output.
- Check CPU load and whether the machine is keeping up with encoding.
- If you record a local archive, inspect the section around the reported interruption for freezes, missing audio, or a damaged output.
Use stream health and connectivity evidence
Compare FFmpeg’s timestamps with messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-stream error indicator associates messages with the time they were seen and distinguishes critical from moderate errors; its listed issues include stream-format and keyframe problems. This can help distinguish a warning about the submitted stream from an interruption visible in FFmpeg’s own log.
If local output is healthy, test the outbound internet connection. A speed test can indicate a connection problem, but it does not prove that every route to YouTube is healthy. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says: “If you find issues with your internet connection: Contact your internet service provider to troubleshoot.”

5. Check encoder settings and stream health
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that settings apply to your chosen ingestion protocol and intended stream; changing codec or bitrate is not a guaranteed remedy for a transport interruption.
Bitrate guidance depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For example, YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. Do not apply either figure to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs as if it were a universal setting.

6. Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely layer to check | Next diagnostic step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot start publishing or reports an authentication/startup error | URL or stream key | Verify the current Live Control Room destination and key; reset the key if needed and update FFmpeg. |
| RTMPS SSL or certificate error | Transport/TLS | Check the RTMPS URL and, where applicable, port 443. |
| RTMPS connection timeout | Transport or outbound connection | Verify the URL and RTMPS support in the encoder; then investigate outbound connectivity if local output is healthy. |
| FFmpeg logs encoder, input, or output errors near the drop | Encoder or source | Inspect source routing, audio/video output, software version, CPU load, and any local archive. |
| Local output looks healthy but the stream disconnects | Outbound connectivity or route | Test the connection, compare timestamps with YouTube’s health messages, and contact the ISP if the connection test identifies an issue. |
| YouTube reports a format or keyframe issue | Stream payload/settings | Review the applicable codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe guidance for the stream configuration. |
7. Avoid guessing at reconnect flags
There is no single reconnect command that can responsibly be prescribed without the complete command, FFmpeg build, connection direction, protocol, and error text. A flag suited to an FFmpeg input does not necessarily address a failure while FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube. First determine whether the failure is authentication/configuration, transport/TLS, encoder/payload, or network-related; then choose a change that targets that layer and retest.
For command-specific help, provide the FFmpeg version/build output, the complete command with the stream key replaced by a redaction, and the log excerpt around the drop. Include whether FFmpeg is the YouTube sender or is reading another source.
Or let it run in the cloud
