The same repeated reconnect message can describe different failures, and FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs—not as a universal fix for an RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. A kids’ audience designation does not, by itself, explain a connection failure.
Why does FFmpeg keep reconnecting to YouTube Live?
FFmpeg may be trying to recover an input that stopped delivering media, while YouTube may instead be losing the encoder’s publishing feed. A third possibility is that the encoder or host is unstable. The reconnect message alone does not identify which leg failed.

- Input failure: The source after an
-ioption—such as an HTTP or RTSP feed, or a local file or playlist—stops supplying media. - Output failure: FFmpeg cannot maintain its connection to YouTube’s ingest destination, commonly over RTMP or RTMPS.
- Ingestion or configuration issue: YouTube reports a problem with the stream, destination, key, or incoming media.
- Host or network issue: The process, CPU, source path, or outbound connection is interrupted or overloaded.
Without the FFmpeg command and logs, version and build, input protocol, and YouTube Live Control Room messages, there is no sound basis for naming one cause or claiming a particular fix has been tested for this stream.

Collect evidence before changing flags
- Save the complete command and version banner. Redact the stream key and any private source URLs before sharing them. Include the FFmpeg version/build output and timestamps.
- Capture logs around a reconnect. Record the lines immediately before and after each disconnect. Note whether FFmpeg stays alive, exits, or is restarted by a supervisor.
- Mark the input and output boundaries. Each
-iintroduces an input; the publishing destination is the output. Determine which side reports the error and identify its protocol. - Check YouTube at the same timestamps. In Live Control Room, note stream-health messages and real-time metrics while the problem is happening. Compare their timing with FFmpeg’s logs; the dashboard and encoder report different parts of the path.
- Check the media and host. Confirm the source keeps producing valid audio and video. Inspect CPU load, the encoder’s output, and any local archive for gaps or corruption around the failure.
For YouTube-specific diagnosis, consult YouTube Help’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream, See your live stream’s metrics, and Manage live stream settings. The stream URL and key route the encoder feed to YouTube; verify that both match the intended event in Live Control Room, and reset or replace a suspect key there before updating the encoder securely.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the protocol they cover
When the failing input is HTTP
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect for reconnecting after a disconnect before EOF, reconnect_at_eof for treating EOF as an error, and reconnect_streamed for streamed or non-seekable inputs. The documentation says: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” These options can be relevant to a live HTTP input; their behavior depends on the installed FFmpeg release and build.
Illustrative HTTP-input example only:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -i "https://SOURCE-URL" [your existing encoding options] "YOUR-OUTPUT-DESTINATION"Replace the illustrative source and output with your actual values; do not publish a stream key. The reconnect options go before the matching HTTP input’s -i. If there are multiple inputs, scope options to the correct one and verify the accepted options with your installed build. This example is not an RTMP/RTMPS output repair, nor a complete 24/7 watchdog.

When the publishing output is failing
If logs show the input continuing normally but the YouTube output disconnecting, HTTP input flags are not the answer. Compare the output error and timestamp with YouTube’s health message, verify the event’s stream URL and key, then investigate encoder health and outbound connectivity. The available evidence does not establish a universal FFmpeg output-side reconnect command for YouTube publishing.

Check YouTube ingestion settings and stream health
YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and keyframes every two seconds, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Its bitrate figures are platform recommendations, not thresholds proven to prevent reconnects. The following H.264 examples are from the current guidance accessed 2026-10-03:

Use the row that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check that available upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate. Do not treat these recommendations as reconnect diagnostics: a settings mismatch and a network drop are different problems.
YouTube’s guidance also says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health and review messages during the event. If a failure recurs, change one variable at a time and compare the next timestamps, logs, dashboard messages, and local recording.

Test the outbound connection if the encoder looks healthy
If FFmpeg’s input and media output appear intact but YouTube reports interrupted delivery, test the strength of the host’s outbound connection using YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance. If the test finds a connection issue, contact the ISP. A wired Ethernet connection may be a useful diagnostic comparison, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a cable fixes repeated reconnects.
An Ethernet cable cannot repair an invalid stream key, an HTTP option applied to the wrong protocol, a failing source, an overloaded host, or a YouTube-side issue. Use a cable only to help isolate a suspected local wireless or network-path problem, not as a substitute for checking the logs and dashboard.

Make recovery an operational plan, not a single flag
For a 24/7 channel, process supervision, source continuity, network redundancy, backup encoders, alerts, and recovery behavior are separate design choices. YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips recommends advance setup, testing, ongoing monitoring, and failover tests when a backup encoder is configured. Test the recovery path before relying on it during an event, and confirm from both logs and Live Control Room that the stream actually recovered.
The audience setting for a kids’ stream is separate from connection troubleshooting. Set the appropriate audience designation and address copyright and reused-content obligations for the material you broadcast; changing those settings does not make an unstable input or output connection reliable.
