Fix FFmpeg Reconnect Errors When Pushing a YouTube Stream from Linode

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags do not guarantee recovery for a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output. Find the failing stage, verify the Live Control Room endpoint, and work through encoder and outbound-network checks.

If FFmpeg loses a YouTube live connection from a Linode server, first identify whether the failure is at the input or the YouTube output. FFmpeg’s familiar -reconnect options are documented for HTTP; they should not be treated as recovery switches for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. Check the exact error and output URL before changing flags or Linode network settings.

Identify where the connection is failing

FFmpeg can be receiving a source over one protocol and publishing to YouTube over another. An input disconnect and an output disconnect need different fixes. RTMP is a protocol for streaming multimedia over TCP/IP; YouTube live publishing commonly uses RTMP or RTMPS.

  • Input failure: The source URL or input process disconnects, stalls, or reaches end of file. HTTP reconnect options may be relevant if that input uses HTTP.
  • Output failure: FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube, reports a write error, or loses the publishing connection. HTTP reconnect options do not establish recovery for an RTMP/RTMPS output.
  • Unhealthy stream after connecting: FFmpeg may remain connected while YouTube reports missing, choppy, or unhealthy video. Investigate encoding, source, bitrate, and network capacity as well as connection stability.

FFmpeg describes HTTP reconnect options in its HTTP protocol documentation and documents RTMP separately. A message such as “broken pipe” or “connection reset by peer” is a symptom, not by itself proof of which side caused the disconnect.

Capture the failure before changing settings

  1. Save the full command and version. Record the FFmpeg command, build/version, and complete log lines just before and after the disconnect. Redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing logs.
  2. Locate the failed stage. Check whether the error names the input URL or the output URL, and whether it occurs while connecting, during writing, or after an apparent successful connection.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note whether it reports a stream-health issue and when that message appears relative to FFmpeg’s log. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance distinguishes unhealthy encoder output from a healthy encoder preview that may point to an outbound connection problem.

Keep the stream key private: anyone with the key may be able to publish to that ingest. YouTube’s setup process places the key in the encoder, so do not include it in a public command or screenshot.

Verify YouTube’s URL, protocol, and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and key for the event or stream configuration you are using.
  2. Compare the copied URL character by character with the FFmpeg output URL. Check the scheme and server as well as the key; do not substitute a hostname from an example.
  3. If YouTube specifies RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL. YouTube says both the protocol and server should be rtmps, not just rtmp. If an SSL error persists, verify both parts of the endpoint; YouTube’s guidance suggests port 443 where the SSL error continues.
  4. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol and TLS behavior required by the endpoint. A TLS handshake error differs from a disconnect after the stream has started.

See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance. RTMPS encrypts the connection; RTMP does not. Use the endpoint YouTube provides for your stream rather than guessing at a replacement URL or port.

Use reconnect options only for the matching protocol

Options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error are HTTP protocol controls in FFmpeg’s documentation. They can help when an HTTP input needs retry behavior, but they are not documented as RTMP/RTMPS output reconnection controls. Adding them to a YouTube publishing command does not prove that FFmpeg will restore a dropped output connection.

If the input is HTTP, put the relevant HTTP options in the input’s option group, before that input’s -i. For a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output failure, diagnose the endpoint, transport, encoder process, and network path instead of assuming HTTP flags will repair it. If you need unattended recovery, your process supervisor or streaming workflow must be designed to restart or re-establish the publishing session; verify its behavior with a controlled test rather than relying on an undocumented flag.

Check encoder output and YouTube ingest settings

When the connection establishes but YouTube reports that it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, verify the actual stream parameters. YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Selected H.264 bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in its current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. They are recommendations, not guaranteed minimum Linode bandwidth or a diagnosis of a particular server.

Resolution and frame rate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

Match the target to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending, and leave headroom for network variation. A configured bitrate that exceeds stable outbound capacity can cause an unhealthy stream even when the URL and key are correct.

Separate encoding problems from transport problems

  • Review FFmpeg logs and CPU load for encoder errors, dropped frames, or sustained overload.
  • Inspect the source or a local recording if available to determine whether the picture and audio are healthy before they reach YouTube.
  • If FFmpeg output and YouTube’s encoder preview look healthy but the stream still fails downstream, test outbound connectivity from the Linode VM to the actual ingest endpoint and port.

YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages during it. Change one relevant setting at a time, then retest and preserve the logs so you can tell whether the change helped.

Check the Linode network without assuming a Linode fault

The available evidence does not establish a Linode-specific reconnect bug, outage, default port block, or universal firewall fix. Linode’s role should be investigated from the affected instance and its actual network configuration.

  1. Test whether the VM can reach the exact YouTube ingest endpoint and port specified in Live Control Room.
  2. Review the instance’s configured firewall and network rules for outbound traffic relevant to that endpoint.
  3. Compare the result with FFmpeg’s timestamped logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages. A timeout before connection, an SSL handshake failure, and a reset during publishing call for different investigation.
  4. If the VM can connect but the stream remains unhealthy, return to encoder load, bitrate, keyframe interval, source stability, and the available outbound capacity.

Do not make a broad firewall change just because FFmpeg reports a reset or timeout. Establish which connection is failing and test the specific endpoint first.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg and YouTube symptoms

Symptom What to check Next step
“Failed to connect to server — connection timed out” Output URL, protocol, endpoint, port, and outbound reachability from the VM. Copy the current URL from Live Control Room and test access to that endpoint; check configured egress rules rather than guessing at a firewall fix.
SSL or TLS error when using RTMPS Whether the URL’s scheme and server are both the RTMPS values YouTube supplied, and whether the FFmpeg build supports the required TLS connection. Correct the endpoint from Live Control Room; YouTube suggests port 443 if an SSL error persists.
“Broken pipe” or “connection reset by peer” during output Whether the log identifies the output, when the disconnect occurs, and whether YouTube reports a stream-health problem. Verify endpoint and key, then distinguish a transport drop from encoder or ingest-health issues. Do not expect HTTP reconnect flags to restore RTMP/RTMPS output.
“YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming” Actual bitrate, resolution, frame rate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, encoder load, and available upload capacity. Align settings with YouTube’s current recommendations and retest with representative content.
FFmpeg continues running but YouTube shows no or unhealthy video Whether the source is producing valid video/audio and whether the encoder preview is healthy. Inspect local output and FFmpeg logs; if encoder output is healthy, investigate the outbound path to the ingest endpoint.
