To keep marketplace product photos upright, decode each image with its EXIF orientation applied—or normalize its pixels once before creating thumbnails and listing derivatives—then validate the finished files against the destination marketplace’s current rules. Rotation alone is not enough: EXIF orientation can also specify mirroring. Image requirements differ by marketplace, country, image slot, and upload route, so there is no safe universal preset.
Why are my uploaded product photos sideways?
A photo’s stored pixels and its intended display orientation can differ. Apple documents that iOS cameras may encode pixel data in the sensor’s native landscape orientation while metadata indicates how the camera was held; software such as UIKit uses that information to display the image correctly. If an ingest or derivative pipeline ignores the orientation tag, a preview or listing image can appear sideways even though the original looks upright in another viewer. Orientation metadata can describe mirroring as well as rotation. A pipeline that handles only quarter-turn rotations may still render some images incorrectly. Apple’s Core Image API describes an EXIF-based transformation that reorients an image to a specified orientation: orientationTransform(forExifOrientation:).

How do I fix EXIF orientation when uploading images?
Apply orientation consistently at one point in the pipeline. Either use a decoder that honors the orientation tag whenever it renders the image, or transform the pixels to the intended display orientation during ingest and then treat that normalized image as the source for all derivatives. Do not apply the same orientation transform again downstream, or an image can be rotated or mirrored incorrectly.

- Receive and inspect the file. Determine its actual format, dimensions, and orientation metadata; do not rely on the filename or extension alone.
- Decode with orientation awareness. Read the EXIF orientation and apply its rotation or mirror transform, or normalize the pixel data once at ingest. If a file cannot be decoded or its metadata is invalid, report the error instead of silently producing a potentially wrong image.
- Generate derivatives from the oriented image. Create thumbnails and marketplace-specific sizes only after the intended visual orientation is established, so previews and uploads share the same result.
- Validate each destination file. Check the requirements for the exact marketplace, country, upload workflow, and image role. Keep failures visible with a useful validation report rather than silently substituting a file.
- Preserve required disclosures and rights-related metadata. Remove optional metadata only after checking that doing so will not discard information required for the listing.
This workflow follows from Apple’s documented camera behavior and orientation APIs; it is implementation guidance, not a claim that every image library behaves identically.
What image size and format does my marketplace require?
Use the destination’s current seller guidance rather than carrying a single image preset across marketplaces. The figures below are examples of platform-specific guidance, not universal requirements. Walmart’s cited Canada pages also differ from one another, so verify which guidance applies to your endpoint and submission path before enforcing a limit.

Should I remove camera metadata before uploading product photos?
Make that decision deliberately rather than stripping every metadata field automatically. Camera make, model, and capture settings are generally optional for ordinary product images in the marketplace guidance cited here; they do not replace the image pixels or reliably tell an upload pipeline how to orient them. EXIF orientation must be applied or preserved in a way the receiving workflow understands.
There is also a specific disclosure case: Amazon says that, under its stated conditions, images featuring photorealistic people generated entirely by AI need the XMP dc:subject keyword contains-synthetic-performer. Do not remove or omit that required disclosure when it applies; consult the Amazon Product image guide for its conditions.

How should I handle marketplace image rules that conflict?
Keep validation rules scoped to the listing destination and image role. A main image may face composition restrictions that do not apply in the same way to additional images, while a marketplace’s accepted formats, size ceilings, and technical recommendations may vary by market or upload path. Amazon also states that an upload does not guarantee that an image will appear on the product detail page, so passing file checks is not the same as confirming display.
For Walmart Canada in particular, the cited 2026 and 2024 guidance differs on file-size limits, dimensions, and accepted formats. Confirm the applicable current guidance at the point of submission rather than treating either page as a universal Walmart rule. For format-level implementation, CIPA lists Exif 3.1 (DC-008-Translation-2026), published 2026-01-30, and Exif metadata for XMP (DC-010-2026), published 2026-06-01.
