Preserve the untouched scan, make a duplicate, and label any inferred content as an AI-assisted reconstruction.
What “damaged art” means in an AI workflow
In this guide, “art” includes scanned photographs, prints, drawings, paintings and digital image files. Typical digital defects include dust, scratches, tears, creases, water stains, foxing-like spots, faded colour, blur, low resolution, missing corners, holes and incomplete scan areas. Faces, lettering, signatures and fine linework need special caution because a model may replace them with plausible but incorrect detail.
AI edits the digital representation. It does not flatten a warped print, stabilize flaking paint, remove mould, mend a torn canvas or reverse chemical deterioration. A fragile or valuable physical object should be assessed by a qualified conservator before you handle or scan it.
Protect the original before using any AI tool
- Do not edit the only copy. Scan or photograph the object at the highest practical quality.
- Capture the entire item, including borders, labels, signatures and identifying marks.
- Correct obvious rotation and perspective problems before restoration.
- Save an untouched master file in a lossless format and make a duplicate for editing.
- Record the software, model, date, prompts and major settings.
- Export both the restored result and a comparison with the untouched source.

Choose a workflow by the job

Cloud services require uploading the image. For private family records, legal material or unpublished work, review retention, privacy, model-training and export terms first. Confirm commercial-use rights before selling a result or delivering client work; you must also have rights to the source artwork.
Fastest method: MyHeritage Photo Repair
MyHeritage says Photo Repair is designed for scratches, tears, holes, stains and similar damage. Its service can produce a result in a few seconds, but speed is not evidence that the reconstructed details are historically accurate (feature details).

Exact menu path
- Open the Photos area in MyHeritage.
- Select an album or open All Media Items.
- Open the image.
- If damage is detected, select Repair. If the button is absent, open the three-dot menu and choose Repair.
- Wait for the generated version.
- Use the before/after slider to compare the whole image, not just the most obvious scratch.
- Download the original, repaired image or comparison.
- For severe damage, open the settings panel and compare Gentle Repair with Extensive Repair.
Gentle or Extensive Repair?
Start with Gentle Repair, the default intended for most photos. Use Extensive Repair only when substantial damage remains. MyHeritage warns that the stronger model can occasionally affect unrelated parts of the image (repair instructions). Check eyes, hands, jewellery, patterned clothing, text, architectural lines and artwork edges before choosing an output.
Free use is available for several photos; additional repairs require a qualifying subscription. Allowances and plan terms can change, so check the current Photo Repair terms. MyHeritage also offers a Photo Subscription with repair, enhancement, colourisation and storage features (subscription details).

Controlled method: Photoshop and Generative Fill
Adobe describes Firefly and Photoshop Generative Fill for cracks, tears, water stains and missing areas (Adobe restoration overview; Generative Fill restoration details). This is the better route when you need to decide exactly which pixels may change.
- Open the duplicate scan in Photoshop.
- Duplicate the background layer.
- Create a separate empty retouching layer where possible.
- Select one defect at a time with a lasso, marquee or object-selection tool.
- Apply healing, cloning or Generative Fill to that selected area.
- Review every generated variation.
- Reject results that alter faces, lettering, signatures, borders or recognizable brushwork.
- Reduce layer opacity or add a mask when the repair is too strong.
- Repeat in small sections instead of selecting the entire damaged image.
- Save a layered working file and export a flattened copy for printing or sharing.
Generative Fill uses surrounding context to create a plausible result; a text prompt cannot reveal what an unknown brushstroke, face or printed word originally was. For documents and signed art, reconstruct lettering manually from a known reference rather than accepting generated text.

Repair is not the same as enhancement

MyHeritage says its Photo Enhancer can simulate blurry facial detail and may occasionally distort it (enhancer documentation). Its educational guidance distinguishes artificially generated colourisation from attempts to restore faded colour (colour feature explanation).
A practical hybrid workflow
- Preserve the untouched scan and create a working duplicate.
- Correct crop, rotation, perspective and exposure without inventing detail.
- Remove straightforward dust and scratches with conventional healing or cloning.
- Use AI repair on localized tears, stains, holes and missing patches.
- Apply restrained denoising or upscaling only if the output size requires it.
- Manually check and correct faces, lettering, signatures, edges and repeated patterns.
- Compare the result against the original at 100% and normal viewing size.
- Save the layered master, a flattened export and a clearly labelled AI-assisted version.
Quality-control checklist
- Are faces still recognizable, or has age, expression or eye shape changed?
- Has any text, date, label or signature changed?
- Did denoising erase genuine grain, paper texture or brushwork?
- Are there repeated patterns, impossible anatomy or broken architectural lines?
- Does the colour agree with known references, or is it merely an estimate?
- Can every major edit be reversed through layers, masks or the preserved master?
- Is the file labelled “AI-assisted reconstruction” when content was inferred?
When AI should not be trusted as evidence
Do not present generated pixels as recovered fact when a face, signature, historical detail or large section is missing. Legal, evidentiary, museum and scholarly images need a documented distinction between the source and any interpretation. For a damaged physical object, use a conservator; AI may help create a separate visualisation, but it cannot stabilize the object.

AI also cannot reliably compensate for glare, motion blur, clipped highlights, severe underexposure or a poor scan. Re-scan or re-photograph the original whenever possible. For privacy-sensitive work, consider a local or open-source model only if you can verify its dependencies, behaviour and licence.

Choose MyHeritage for the fastest casual photo repair, Photoshop/Firefly when control and provenance matter, and Topaz as an enhancement layer for denoising, sharpening or enlargement. Choose a professional conservator for a valuable or physically damaged original. In every case, keep the untouched scan, inspect faces and text, and describe inferred pixels as an AI-assisted reconstruction rather than a recovered original.
