What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Battle.net problems become easier to fix when you separate three things: account access, the desktop launcher and its Agent service, and the game files being downloaded or patched. Start with the exact error code, if one is displayed. Blizzard uses different remedies for a sign-in rejection such as BLZBNTBNA00000A8E, a failed required download such as BLZBNTAGT000008A3, a patch write failure such as BLZBNTBTS00000034, and missing Agent files such as BLZBNTBNA00000006.
Work from the matching branch below instead of repeatedly reinstalling the launcher. The steps reflect Blizzard support guidance for its U.S. site and global error articles; service conditions and instructions can change, so use the current error-specific support page if the wording on your screen differs.

Identify which part of Battle.net is failing
The same symptom—“Battle.net won’t work”—can describe several independent failures. Classifying it first prevents an account problem from being treated like a corrupt installation, or a disk write problem from being mistaken for an outage.

If a code is visible, use that code as the primary diagnosis. A generic checklist is less useful than the error-specific path because Blizzard assigns different likely causes to each code.

Do these checks before changing files
Capture the exact text before dismissing the message. Record capitalization and every zero in a code; BLZBNTBNA00000006 and BLZBNTBNA00000A8E point to different guidance. Also note your operating system, the affected game, and whether the launcher itself opens.
- Close other installers, game clients, backup jobs, and utilities that may be using the same files.
- Check that the computer has a working internet connection and that another network produces a different result. A phone hotspot can be used only as a diagnostic comparison; it is not a permanent recommendation.
- Check free space on the drive that contains the game or the Battle.net installation. A drive can have room for the launcher while lacking room for a large patch.
- Write down which steps you have already tried. This prevents repeating destructive actions and gives support a usable history.
Do not conclude that Blizzard is currently down from one failed sign-in or download. No live service-status check is established by the guidance here, and a local account, network, permission, or file problem can look similar.
When Battle.net will not sign in
Check the account and BattleTag first
For BLZBNTBNA00000A8E, Blizzard describes a response returned by the server and notes that the account may not have a correctly set BattleTag. Open your Battle.net account management page through Blizzard’s normal account portal and confirm that a BattleTag is present and configured correctly. This check matters because reinstalling the desktop app cannot repair an account profile that the service is rejecting.
The code does not, by itself, prove that your local installation is corrupt. If the BattleTag is correct, try signing in over an alternate network to distinguish an internet-provider or routing issue from an account-specific response. A different result on another network is evidence about the path between your computer and the service, not proof that your original provider is permanently at fault.
Use account recovery for access problems
If you cannot authenticate because you no longer control the email address or have forgotten the password, use Blizzard’s separate email-recovery and password-reset self-service options. These are account-access procedures. Deleting launcher folders, reinstalling Battle.net, or repairing game files does not reset an account password or restore an inaccessible email address.
Investigate local permissions only after the account checks
Blizzard’s guidance mentions reinstalling the app for rare launcher-related cases and creating a new administrator account to investigate permissions. Treat both as later diagnostics, not the first response to a server-returned sign-in code. A new administrator account can show whether the failure is tied to the original Windows profile, but it does not change the BattleTag or recover account credentials.
Fix a download or patch that fails with BLZBNTAGT000008A3
BLZBNTAGT000008A3 indicates that the app could not download a file required to install or patch a game. The useful distinction is that the launcher may be functioning while one required transfer is failing.

- Exit Battle.net completely. Close the desktop window rather than leaving it minimized.
- Confirm that the Agent process has stopped. On Windows, open Task Manager and wait until
Agent.exeis no longer listed. Reopen Battle.net only after it disappears. - Restart the computer if the Agent will not exit or the error returns. A restart clears a process that remained attached to the previous session.
- Check the connection. If possible, compare the result on another network. Note whether the transfer fails at the same point or progresses.
- Repair the affected game files. Use the launcher’s repair or scan function for the game named in the error. This targets damaged local files rather than the account.
- Allow Blizzard applications in security software. Firewall, endpoint-protection, and antivirus rules can block the Agent or its file transfer. Add the Blizzard applications to the permitted list according to the security product’s own instructions, then retry.
If the game downloads normally after the Agent restart but fails again only when security software is active, the timing is useful evidence. Do not permanently disable protection as a troubleshooting shortcut; configure an appropriate exception or consult the security product’s documentation.
Fix a patch write error: BLZBNTBTS00000034
BLZBNTBTS00000034 means Battle.net could not write patch files. Start with storage and permissions, not a hardware purchase. A write error alone is not proof that the drive needs replacement.
Check the destination and free space
Verify which drive and folder contain the affected game, then check the available space on that destination. Also check the drive that holds temporary launcher data if it is different. A patch may need additional working space while it replaces or verifies files, so having only the nominal size of the update available may not be enough.
Remove software conflicts
Close applications that may keep game files open, including other launchers, overlays, backup or synchronization tools, media scanners, and editors pointed at the installation directory. Retry after those programs have fully exited. If the error appears only while security software scans the folder, configure a narrowly scoped exception for the Blizzard applications or game directory using that product’s documented controls.
Check permissions
Make sure the account running Battle.net can read and write the selected game folder and the drive is not mounted in a restricted or read-only state. If the game was copied from another Windows account or an old installation, inherited permissions can prevent patching even when the folder is visible. Correct ownership and access through your operating system’s standard security settings rather than deleting the entire game.
Do not defragment an SSD
Blizzard’s guidance explicitly says not to defragment a solid-state drive. A write error should lead to checks of space, access, security software, and conflicting applications—not an automatic defragmentation job or a replacement drive.
When Battle.net reports missing Agent files: BLZBNTBNA00000006
BLZBNTBNA00000006 concerns missing Battle.net Agent files. Use the least invasive checks first because the launcher may be able to rebuild its components.

- Restart the computer. This can release a locked Agent file and reload operating-system services.
- Update the operating system and hardware drivers. Use the update mechanisms supplied by your operating system and hardware vendors. Record whether the error started after a particular update.
- Close conflicting applications. Exit other launchers, overlays, cleanup tools, and programs that monitor or lock the Battle.net folders.
- Scan for malware. Use your security software’s normal scan and address any detection before rebuilding launcher files.
- Check security-software exceptions. Ensure Blizzard applications are not being quarantined, blocked, or silently removed.
Advanced Agent rebuild options
If the basic checks do not restore the Agent, Blizzard lists advanced options that include deleting the Battle.net Tools folder so the launcher can rebuild it, reinstalling the app, or resetting the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) repository. These operations change launcher or operating-system state. Use the complete, current Blizzard instructions for the exact path and commands rather than improvising a WMI reset, and keep a record of what you changed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Deleting the Tools folder is intended to let Battle.net recreate Agent components; it is not an account-recovery step and should not be presented as a cure for a password or BattleTag problem. Reinstall only after the less invasive checks, especially if your games are installed on a separate drive and you want to avoid changing their locations.
If the launcher is stuck at “Updating Battle.net Agent”
“Stuck at Updating Battle.net Agent” describes a launcher-update state, not necessarily a game-download failure. First close the app and verify in Task Manager that Agent.exe has exited. Reopen the launcher, and restart the computer if the process remains or the update immediately stalls again.
Next apply the environment checks that fit the symptom: confirm the connection, close conflicting programs, update the operating system and drivers, and check that security software permits Blizzard applications. If an error code appears after the restart, stop using the generic branch and follow that code’s instructions. For a missing-file code, use the Agent-file procedure above; for a required-download code, use the download branch instead.
A launcher that reaches the sign-in screen but rejects an account is no longer an Agent-update problem. Switch to the account branch rather than repeatedly deleting launcher files.
Separate account, network, security, and storage causes
| Evidence | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
Sign-in fails with BLZBNTBNA00000A8E and the account lacks a BattleTag |
An account-profile setup issue or a server-returned response | That the desktop installation is damaged |
| The same download fails until security software permits Blizzard applications | A blocking or quarantine rule | That the internet connection is unusable for every service |
| A different network changes the sign-in or download result | A provider, routing, or local-network difference | That the alternate network is a permanent fix |
BLZBNTBTS00000034 appears with very little free space |
A destination-space or write-access problem | That the physical drive has failed |
BLZBNTBNA00000006 returns after a restart and security check |
Agent files may be missing, blocked, or being removed | That an operating-system reset is safe without following Blizzard’s full instructions |
Use these observations to choose the next branch. Do not stack unrelated changes—such as reinstalling, changing networks, and resetting operating-system repositories at once—because you will lose the evidence showing which condition mattered.
A practical decision tree
When the screen gives little information, use the point at which the process stops as your guide. If Battle.net never gets past authentication, begin with account recovery, BattleTag configuration, and the alternate-network comparison. If it opens but cannot update itself, concentrate on the Agent process, operating-system updates, conflicting software, and security exceptions. If the launcher works but one game cannot download, repair that game and investigate the connection and security rules. If a patch reaches the writing stage and then fails, inspect the destination folder, free space, permissions, and applications holding files open.

Change one condition at a time where practical. For example, close the app and wait for Agent.exe to disappear before changing firewall settings. If the restart fixes the problem, you have useful evidence and do not need to delete the Tools folder. If the alternate network changes the result, record that comparison before making local file changes. This orderly approach makes it easier to reverse an unsuccessful change and gives support a clear timeline.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Reinstalling for every code: Reinstallation cannot correct a missing BattleTag, reset a password, or fix a full destination drive.
- Closing only the visible window: The Agent may still be running. Confirm its exit in Task Manager before reopening the launcher.
- Disabling protection indefinitely: Use the security product’s documented exception controls instead of leaving antivirus or firewall protection off.
- Deleting the game to solve a launcher problem: A repair or scan may address damaged files without changing the installation location.
- Resetting WMI without instructions: This is an advanced operating-system operation. Follow Blizzard’s current procedure exactly or seek support.
- Assuming a failed test proves the cause: A different network, administrator account, or security exception is evidence that narrows the possibilities, not absolute proof of one underlying fault.
What to include when you contact support
If the documented steps fail, use the error-specific Blizzard support page, technical support forums, or Blizzard support rather than repeating the same reinstall indefinitely. Include enough detail for someone else to reproduce the decision path:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The exact error code and complete message, copied rather than paraphrased.
- Your operating system and whether the failure affects the launcher, one game, or every game.
- When the problem begins: at sign-in, while updating the Agent, at the start of a download, or during patch-file writing.
- Whether another network changed the result.
- Available space on the destination drive for a write error.
- Whether
Agent.exedisappeared from Task Manager after closing the app. - Which documented steps you attempted, including repairs, security exceptions, restarts, or advanced Agent actions.
That information lets support distinguish an account response from a local launcher process, a blocked transfer, and a write-permission failure. It also prevents an advanced operating-system change from being recommended before basic evidence has been collected.
Safe order of operations
For most cases, the lowest-risk sequence is: capture the code; classify the symptom; check the account for sign-in failures; close the launcher and wait for the Agent to exit; restart if necessary; verify the network; check storage and permissions for write errors; configure security exceptions; repair affected game files; and only then consider Agent-folder deletion, reinstallation, or an operating-system repository reset.
Keep account recovery separate from launcher maintenance. Keep a game-file repair separate from an Agent rebuild. Each action targets a different layer, and matching the action to the layer is what makes troubleshooting faster and easier to undo.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first when Battle.net will not sign in?
Copy the exact message or code. For BLZBNTBNA00000A8E, check that your account has a correctly configured BattleTag, then compare the result on another network. Use Blizzard’s email-recovery or password-reset options if the problem is lost account access.
Does BLZBNTBNA00000A8E mean Battle.net is corrupted?
No. Blizzard describes it as a server-returned response that can also indicate missing or incorrect BattleTag setup. Confirm the account before reinstalling the desktop app.
Best Value
Why does BLZBNTAGT000008A3 stop a game download?
It means the app could not download a file required for installation or patching. Close Battle.net, wait for Agent.exe to disappear in Task Manager, restart if necessary, check the connection, repair the game, and allow Blizzard applications through security software.
What does BLZBNTBTS00000034 mean?
It is a patch-file write failure. Check the destination drive’s free space, folder permissions, security-software rules, and programs that may be using the files. The code alone does not show that the drive needs replacement.
Should I defragment my SSD after a Battle.net write error?
No. Blizzard’s guidance explicitly says not to defragment an SSD. Check space, access, security software, and conflicting applications instead.
How can I fix missing Battle.net Agent files?
For BLZBNTBNA00000006, restart the computer, update the operating system and drivers, close conflicting applications, scan for malware, and check security exceptions. If that fails, Blizzard lists rebuilding the Tools folder, reinstalling the app, or resetting WMI as advanced options; follow its current instructions exactly.
Is deleting the Battle.net Tools folder the same as account recovery?
No. Deleting the Tools folder is intended to let the launcher rebuild Agent components. It does not reset a password, restore an email address, or fix a BattleTag configuration.
What information should I send Blizzard support?
Provide the exact code and message, operating system, affected game, point of failure, whether another network changed the result, free space for a write error, whether Agent.exe exited, and every documented step already attempted.
The Bottom Line
Match the remedy to the failing layer: recover the account for access problems, restart and check Agent.exe for launcher updates, inspect the connection and security exceptions for failed downloads, and check space and permissions for write errors. Use advanced folder or operating-system changes only after the basic branch is exhausted, and give Blizzard the exact code and troubleshooting history if the problem remains.
