Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To reduce network lag in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, check Activision and platform service status first, run your console’s connection test, then try Ethernet and pause other heavy network use. These steps can improve reliability or reduce home-network congestion, but they cannot guarantee lower ping: latency also depends on your internet provider’s route and your distance from the game server.
Identify what kind of lag you are seeing
“Lag” can describe several different problems. Activision lists rubber-banding, where your character moves and snaps back; stuttering, where movement freezes or skips; delayed hit markers; and being removed from a match or matchmaking lobby. Those symptoms can come from different points in the connection, so they do not by themselves prove that your Wi-Fi or router is at fault. Activision’s Modern Warfare lag guidance defines latency, commonly called ping, as the time data takes to travel between locations, measured in milliseconds.

Work through the fixes in order
-
Check for a game or platform outage
Check Activision’s online services status and the status page for your platform. If either reports an incident, changing your home router is unlikely to resolve the underlying problem; wait for service to recover and test again.

Run the console’s connection test
Use your platform’s built-in network test before changing router settings. Activision’s connection guidance covers PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and notes that Xbox multiplayer testing can identify problems associated with lag or disconnections. The support article is dated 2019-10-27, so menu names may have changed; follow the current console menus rather than relying on an older path. See Activision’s connection guidance.

Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
Activision recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi reliability and available bandwidth can vary. If your console and router have Ethernet ports, connect them with a cable long enough to reach safely, then play a match and compare whether the connection is steadier. Ethernet is a reliability test, not a promise that your ping will drop.
-
Pause competing network use
While diagnosing the issue, pause nonessential video or music streaming, large downloads, and gameplay streaming uploads. Other people and devices sharing the connection can consume bandwidth that would otherwise be available to the game. Bandwidth—the amount of data that can be transferred over time, often measured in Mbps—is different from ping. A connection can have plenty of bandwidth yet still have high latency.

Use QoS only if your router supports it
Some routers offer Quality of Service (QoS) controls that prioritize a device or type of traffic. If the feature is available, use the router maker’s current instructions to prioritize the console or game traffic, then see whether competing household use is less disruptive. Router settings and labels vary. QoS may help manage local congestion; it cannot fix an Activision outage, a poor internet-provider route, or the distance to a server. Buying a router should not be the first troubleshooting step.

Review advanced router settings cautiously
If connection problems continue, Activision’s connection guidance discusses UPnP, then port forwarding with a static console IP, and then DMZ for consoles. These are router-configuration options, not guaranteed ping fixes. Check current platform and router instructions before changing settings, and do not apply a configuration you do not understand. Activision’s guidance specifically says to remove a static IP from DMZ after testing. Its Modern Warfare support index lists a port article updated 2026-02-03, but exact port values are not needed to diagnose ordinary lag.

Ask your internet provider about recurring route or packet-loss problems
If the problem recurs across matches or persists after local checks, contact your ISP and describe when it happens and which symptoms you see. Activision says more direct routes with fewer network exchange points can reduce latency and potential packet loss. You cannot choose or control the route internet traffic takes yourself, but your provider can investigate its network and available connectivity options in your area.
Why ping may stay high after local fixes
Latency depends substantially on the quality and scope of the ISP network and on geographic distance from servers. Matchmaking attempts to find nearby players, but that does not guarantee a low-ping match if nearby players are scarce or the route through the ISP is poor. A wired connection, paused streams, or QoS can address local reliability or congestion; none can remove distance or correct a remote routing issue. Activision also notes that packet loss can occur even on a good connection. Tightening the local connection can reduce the potential for loss, but cannot guarantee that packets will not be lost.

When to stop changing settings
- If the game or platform reports an outage, wait and recheck service status rather than making router changes.
- If the console’s connection test reports a problem, resolve that connection issue before changing advanced router settings.
- If Ethernet improves stability but not ping, the local wireless link may have been contributing to instability while latency remains affected by the ISP route or server distance.
- If symptoms continue across wired play and reduced household traffic, share the test results and timing with your ISP or consult current Activision and platform support guidance.
