First, check whether the audio is already out of sync in the video file. Play the same passage locally, then run a private YouTube test with that file and compare the beginning with a later passage. If the file is aligned but the test stream is not, troubleshoot the playback and encoder path rather than applying a large sync offset by guesswork.
Find out where the sync problem begins
Use the same recognizable cue in both checks: a spoken word, music beat, or visible action. Compare its audio and picture near the start and again later. A steady mismatch and one that grows over time are different observations, but neither pattern alone identifies the cause.
- Play the exact source file locally. Check whether sound and picture line up in the passage you plan to use.
- Run a private test stream. Use the same file, encoder, and scene as the intended broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health; its guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
- Compare the same cue at the beginning and later on. Note whether the mismatch is already in local playback, appears only in the stream, stays similar, or changes.
If local playback is already misaligned, fix or replace the source before investigating the live encoder. If local playback is aligned but the test stream is not, inspect the playback and encoder path, then check OBS and YouTube indicators.
Check YouTube’s documented encoder settings
Use YouTube’s recommendations as a configuration checklist, not as a guaranteed sync fix. The settings below apply to YouTube’s documented live encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Audio format | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS | Check that the encoder is sending a supported audio format. |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound | Match the setting to the audio format you are using. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds | Check the encoder’s keyframe interval against this range. |
YouTube also lists supported video codecs and frame-rate limits in its encoder guidance. Test stream quality against your available upload connection and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. Meeting the documented settings does not establish that a particular sync fault will be corrected.
Separate synchronization from performance and connection problems
OBS rendering or encoding pressure
If the source is aligned but the stream is not, check OBS performance indicators and its encoding performance troubleshooting guidance. OBS notes that rendering and encoding can be affected by system-resource pressure, including GPU load, and suggests reducing workload when needed. Treat overload as a possible branch only when the actual indicators support it; a demanding scene by itself does not prove the cause of desynchronization.

Dropped frames or unstable connection
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Dropped frames warrant checking connection stability and YouTube stream health, but they do not by themselves prove that audio and video are out of sync. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance and YouTube’s live-stream health status documentation, which describes delivery issues such as insufficient video arriving for smooth streaming.
Latency is not the same as an audio-picture offset
Latency is the time it takes for the stream to reach viewers. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends video in segments. That difference concerns delivery delay; it does not establish that HLS creates a relative offset between sound and picture inside the program. YouTube’s HLS guidance.

Apply one change at a time and verify it
- Save a copy of the working OBS profile before changing settings.
- Use the local-versus-private-stream comparison to choose the branch to investigate: source file, playback or encoder path, performance, or connection.
- Check the relevant audio configuration against YouTube’s recommendations and review OBS performance and connection indicators alongside YouTube stream health.
- Change one relevant setting, then repeat the same test with the same file and cue. Keep the change only if the comparison improves.
- Run another private test and check both an early and a later passage before broadcasting publicly.
The official YouTube and OBS guidance does not provide one exact OBS sync-offset value or a universal correction for pre-recorded-video workflows. The right adjustment depends on where the mismatch is introduced. Do not apply a large offset based on one impression: verify the same visible and audible cue again after any change.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What it indicates | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Audio and picture are misaligned in local playback and the test stream | The mismatch is present before the live output. | Correct or replace the source file before diagnosing the encoder. |
| Local playback is aligned; the test stream is not | The issue appears somewhere in the playback or encoder path. | Check audio configuration and OBS indicators; test one relevant change at a time. |
| The mismatch is similar near the start and later | The observed offset appears stable in those passages; this does not identify its cause. | Recheck the same cue after a controlled change. |
| The mismatch grows in a later passage | The timing difference changes over the tested span; this observation alone does not identify why. | Compare local playback and the stream again, then inspect the playback and encoder path. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. | Investigate connection stability and YouTube stream health separately from sync. |
| OBS indicates rendering or encoding pressure | System-resource load may be affecting rendering or encoding. | Use OBS’s performance guidance to reduce workload, then repeat the private test. |
| YouTube reports insufficient video for smooth streaming | YouTube is reporting a delivery or stream-health problem. | Review encoder quality against the available upload connection and monitor stream health; do not treat the message alone as proof of an audio-picture offset. |
