There is no reliable one-line CSS fix without knowing the phone, browser, operating-system version, and whether the strip is inside the webpage. First locate the strip, then test the matching cause on the affected device.
First determine where the white strip is
Compare the screenshot with the live page on the same phone. Decide whether the strip is part of the document, sits at the screen edge behind or beside browser controls, or appears only in the captured image.

- If it scrolls with page content, investigate the page’s layout and background.
- If it stays at the bottom edge or changes when browser controls move, investigate viewport sizing and the browser’s safe area.
- If the live page looks correct but the saved image does not, check how the screenshot was captured and whether it includes browser UI.
Record the browser and OS versions, orientation, scroll position, and whether the URL bar or toolbar is expanded. Without those details, the symptom alone does not identify a cause.
Check full-height layouts and the scrolling container
Look for sections sized with height: 100vh or min-height: 100vh, fixed-height elements, and layouts where a nested element scrolls instead of the document body. A viewport-height value does not always correspond to the portion of the screen currently visible between mobile browser controls.

A WebKit report for iOS 15 described white space below the floating URL bar when a non-body element was the scroll container, even with its height set to 100vh. The report also records changing behavior and was closed as WONTFIX, so it documents a particular historical case—not a universal explanation for current phones. Another historical WebKit report describes 100vh elements extending beyond the visible area and being partly hidden by mobile Safari controls. Treat that as a browser-specific failure mode to test, not proof that all mobile browsers behave the same way: WebKit’s report on viewport height and browser controls.

On Android, inspect the gesture-navigation safe area
On Android, a page can extend into the gesture-navigation area at the bottom of the screen. Chrome’s edge-to-edge guidance explains that bottom-anchored content may be obscured when the viewport reaches into that area. The browser exposes safe-area insets for layouts that need to account for the viewport edges. Chrome for Developers describes them as “four environment variables that define a rectangle by its top, right, bottom, and left insets from the edge of the viewport.” Read the Chrome on Android edge-to-edge migration guide and follow its guidance for the target behavior rather than applying a generic padding patch.
In particular, the guide cautions that tying padding directly to a changing bottom inset can cause layout thrashing as the browser chin moves. Check how your bottom-positioned elements behave as browser UI changes before choosing an inset-based layout.

Check root and page background colors
If the design uses a dark background or gradient, compare the background on the root html element with the body and the intended page surface. A mismatch can make an exposed edge look like a white bar even when the main content is styled correctly. Also inspect safe-area behavior, viewport-fit=cover, and the browser’s theme color where relevant.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a universal Safari rule. A developer’s iPhone Safari example of a white gap discusses those variables; verify which applies to your page before changing metadata or extending content into a safe area.

Retest on the device that shows the problem
- Open the affected page on the phone and note the browser, OS version, orientation, scroll position, and toolbar state.
- Check whether the strip moves with document content or stays at the screen edge. Compare the live page with the screenshot.
- Inspect full-height CSS, fixed-height sections, and whether the body or a nested element owns scrolling.
- For Android, test bottom-anchored content against the gesture-navigation area and consult Chrome’s edge-to-edge guidance.
- For a dark or gradient design, compare the root and body backgrounds and inspect safe-area and theme-color settings.
- Change one variable at a time. Retest with browser controls expanded and collapsed, after scrolling, and after rotating the phone.
A desktop browser resized to a phone-shaped window can help inspect layout, but it does not establish how the affected mobile browser handles its controls or safe area.
